Title: The Jeans Test
Post by: morgan on June 19, 2012, 04:56:03 AM
As I have decided not to jump on my scale so often and lots of you say to judge by your clothing, I have devised a Jeans Test - as this is what I want to get back into.

I was op-shopping (I so love recycled things) and bought a trendy pair of Jeans - good brand/just worn in- even better half price for the day.  And  that's why I love op-shopping (hmmm not sure if you call it that - thrift shopping? - where people donate used items to charities).

Anyway - I see myself slipping into a size 14 pair of jeans - my happy place - my goal.  Anyway, I am able to slide them up to just above my knees.  Every so often I am going to try them on and chart my progress by how far up I can get them.  I am sure one day they will go all the way.   Then I will do that HAPPY DANCE and do a girly scream. ;D ;D ;D

A girl's gotta have goals. :D

I love this...I have 2 pair of jeans that I LOVE!  They have been banished to the top rack in my closet...but no more.  Those suckers are coming out and staying on my dresser from now on!   Thanks for the challenge and the step OFF the scale...because I feel amazing in my size 14 worn out jeans...and I think hubby likes them too. :P

So I will take the jeans test every Saturday morning until I can button them without lying on my bed.
Oh, it's on!

HA!  Back when I was a kid in high school we did that on purpose  ;D  The tighter the better   :P :P  If you didn't have to lay down to zip them up you were doing it wrong  HA!  Lord how silly we are when we are young  haha

I have to wash my jeans more often because the stretch makes them too baggy.  That's a change!

That will wear them out faster so that you can buy smaller sizes!

Find some good thrift stores and go for the even numbered sizes.  Those odd numbers are shaped for females who haven't "come into their womanhood" if you get my drift.

Hi!
Even the belts dont lie. I had bought an expensivebelt. Now I  have reached the last hole in it. And I think I will have to do away with it. Also my 4 year old jeans is fitting now. I was planning to donate all my old clothes. Glad I was lazy and procrastinated.

But Morgan you are right. Girls also need dreams and goals and need to really really love themselves. God bless you.

Thansk everybody.

Exactly, buy from and donate back to the thrift stores.

This FTS is so fabulous. Now that I KNOW how to lose the excess fat and KEEP IT OFF, I have no qualms about immediately removing clothing that is too big and buying at the thrift stores jeans/trousers, blouses/sweaters in the next size down...just a big too snug...because I know it will only be a few weeks until they fit and then a month or so of wear to be too big.

About the belts.  I think you can have them reduced in length at the buckle end rather than punch new holes. I'm going to try it with one belt that has the cutest heart shaped metal buckle, but recently became too large. Punching new holes might make it shabby looking unless a leatherworker could work his professional magic with new holes and trimming the end.

I splurged and bought new bras yesterday. Those are difficult to find used. Took several tries to find the correct number (band) and letter (cup) combination.  Even then I am using the end hooks and will tighten to the others as needed.

And wouldn't you know it, ALL my current clothes look/fit/drape much better in underwire T-shirt bras at this age and fluffiness.

Initially, when starting FTS in April, I was feeling sad about soon having to say goodbye to some of my favorite clothes.  But when they became to big, they weren't so appealing anymore.  And with the new one-of-a-kinds I find at the thrift stores, it's just like rotation of gifts to myself.  In fact, I am becoming better at finding the quality stuff (fabric and construction)...and what truly fits my shape (fat or skinny) and my personal style.  I often have to hem them for my shortness.   And with that, if the label is still in the clothing, I will have an idea what brands to shop for new when I am normal weight...if I can't find them at the thrift stores.

I'm getting compliments with the nearly 25 pounds gone and better fitting clothes (closer fitting rather than loose cover ups)...even with 45 to 50 pounds to go.

Having clothes that fit help all shapes look their best at any weight or size. Check out What Not to Wear on TLC for more info about dressing for your shape and personal style.

And yesterday, I even bought a sleeveless shell (at the thrift store) to wear instead of the cotton crochet sweater I started the day in. This however, only after I had a gentle talking to myself that at my age (56-5/6)....no one was going to be shocked to see fat, flabby, older looking upper arms on me.  In fact I don't remember seeing any older woman wearing anything but sleeveless tops or tank tops yesterday....and most in shorts. Ha!

I won't do shorts in public. Well, I don't have any shorts yet...so....  Perhaps next summer.

All the best,
Ann

Actually, I think I'm getting a confidence I never really had. I was the chubby one in my family, and as those of you who know, it was commented on too frequently...and unnecessarily.

As if as a child I would know how to correct it, when looking back the family menus were high carb selections. Ha!

Hi Ann! :)

I know exactly what you mean.
Other than when I played football in school or worked in the shipyards, I was always FAT.
So confidence in being a healthy thin person was most often a foreign concept to me.

When I lived with my folks, bread, pasta, pastries, sugary sweets, etc. were the order of the day.
After I graduated college, got married and moved on, so did my bad eating habits.

And then came FTS!... Lord willing, my life has now and forever been changed for the healthier! ;D

And look at your ticker... You're about 1/3 of the way to your goal!!! :o :o :o
Hooray, Ann!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re: The Jeans Test
Post by: Ann B on July 29, 2012, 05:18:24 PM
Thank you, and yes I am nearly 1/3 of the way to goal.  And it has truly been easy once I realized I really had nothing to do but remember 20 carbs.

My body really does know what it's doing and I just get to be patient and watch it all happen.  I initially thought I could decide a goal time, but it looks like my body is going to have the final say. So nothing to do but wait.

When it happens, it will be what it is. I am simply grateful that I know what to do to allow it to happen.

When I lived with my folks, bread, pasta, pastries, sugary sweets, etc. were the order of the day.

Mouseissue, I'm glad you said this. Eating habits are SO important. About a year go, I weighed about 20 pounds less. Then I started a grad program (which is now OVER thank God!) and I got really inactive. Sure, the stress eating was an issue, but I didn't realize that if you're really active, it can cover bad eating habits.

When I was ballroom dancing, going to spinning 2x/week and doing light weights at home plus other active stuff, I was much closer to a normal weight. Still, I had inflammation issues such as psoriasis. In a weird way, I am VERY happy my inactivity revealed that my EATING HABITS were to blame. Sure, I'm going to get active again, but it's nuts to think that someone would have to get "shipyard building" active for their whole lives, just to keep weight down.

I also recently read about a guy who was a triathlete and another low carb ultra sports person who noticed paunchy bellies on these amazing athletes.  Not to mention what you DON'T see on the INSIDE. So despite the external, exercise is just a cover (or can be). It's what's inside that helps.

I truly believe eating this way is very HEALING to the body. Sure we lose weight (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) but I also believe we balance our biochemistry and our bodies by eating this way.

BINGO, Waterlilly!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I've been saying this for a long time on this forum, being healthy IS the objective of FTS!
The benefit of weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) is secondary to that.

We are healing our bodies from years of sugar abuse.
The process takes time... But it's SO worth it! 8) 8) 8)

Yay! I win!!!  (No, just kidding).

I also want to add that Davie Jones was a vegetarian and an avid runner and I believe he recently died at about age 66 from some kind of heart condition. So much for avoiding heart attacks by avoiding "Saturated fat" in meat!

The more I think about this jeans test, the more it makes sense. I'd like to throw my hat (pants?) in the ring and state the following, VERY publically:

I am now a size 16  >:( >:( >:( . I kind of know how I got here and I know FOR SURE how to get OUT OF here.

My goal is either a size 4 or 6  ;D (not sure yet).  Either way, the pants have to fit comfortably with no "relaxed" versions needed  ;D. Thus is my goal. Right now I'm wearing what I call my "fat pants"  :-[ :-[ :-[ . Boy will I be glad to see those go  ;) ;) ! And I don't think I will mess with the scale for a while. For now, it's all about the "FTS of the Low Carb Pants" (or something like that).

Thanks Umpa!  I love these boards too, for the reason above. VERY supportive here with few to no trolls.  I've run into a few low carb advocates who are on real internet attention power trips and their intentions aren't quite as honest as you would expect. I truly believe that you and Doug are trying to do a good thing here and you do have good interests at heart.

I am enjoying this topic. I found a pair of size 12 pants the first month I bought the next size down to be ready for the new smaller size....at the thrift stores.  I had no qualms about buying the size 12 pants.  You all know how cool that is to realize that reaching that size is doable.  I've since bought a few tops a size or more too small (again at the thrift stores) that were so adorable, I couldn't pass them up.

I have no idea where to buy these new...so I keep hitting the jackpot.

My goal size is 8 or 10 (normal size in late 20s after 2 births.  But 12 isn't anything for me to sneeze at.  I'm at size 16 now. Slowly but surely my body is changing. This month more slowly in the weight, but I accept that more is going on internally that is good for me.

Congrats everyone for your continued successes in following FTS....and/or recommitment.

This is true. I think that sometimes you lose weight (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) and sometimes you simply heal your body. It all balances out in the end.

Just re-reading some of these posts and realised I haven't done my jeans test for quite a while.  I'll have to summon up the courage and see how far I can get them up this time.  I know I still have a ways to go (I did choose a size 14 - silly me?) but refuse to get a bigger pair.  This is my ideal so I sticking with it.  Will report after I try them on.

On the plus side, will have to be getting rid of some of my favourite clothes - I happy to say they are TOO BIG!!!!!

Hi Friends, I have taken the challenge of the jeans test yet but instead have taken the "scrub"challenge to get back into my skinny scrubs. I am happy to report that in probably a few more months I will be able to wear them  since I am about half way to my goal. I also have had to get rid of some of my current scrubs because they just look so God awful. : ) Yay to us!

Well I still didn't think I was close to those 14s and while I was op shopping yesterday I felt I needed a goal and bought another pair.  I had tried to try them on, but having worn stockings they didn't slide so I thought they wouldn't fit and would be an inbetween goal before I can fit into the 14s.  So before I hopped into bed I thought I should try them on and see how they didn't fit.  Imagine my surprise (I was speechless) when they slid right on up. Happy happy dance.
The first pair of jeans I have fit into (looking good) in I don't know how many years - lots and lots and lots.  I mean I suppose I could have bought a really huge pair, but I prefer to keep my mirrors in one piece - thank you very much. Now I will be able to gauge my weight wearing these.  They fit absolutely perfect.  I did then have the courage to try my goal jeans - they went up a bit further but still a ways to go, but that's alright - they are my goal, that and a white shirt I bought from the op shop as well, it was a 'designer' shirt that still had the tags on it $369 - I got it for $3.  When I saw it I thought it was gorgeous - I loved everything about it except the size.  I figured I would never get into it.  But hey that's what goals are for.

So this has perked me up no end.  Still smile when I think of it. YAYAYAYAYAYAY

I have been wearing some more fitting clothes and it really does make a difference.  I'm trying not to hide beneath them.  I should make the supreme effort and start tossing out the bigger stuff.  It just seems they are my security and I'm comfortable.  Need to kick the boundaries of that comfort zone!
