Title: Supporting my husband.
Post by: paulachappell on May 29, 2010, 12:56:12 PM
Hi Doug,  I am fairly new to FTSFand E.  I found out about your book through GG BranCrispbread.  I have been using them for 3 years now.  I am married to a type II diabetic and over the past several years have been witnessing his health spiraling downward at a rapid rate.  He has recently been diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, neuropathy in his feet and just had 3 procedures for venus reflux in his legs after being found to have a large DVT in his right leg last October.  My husband is also named Doug.  He has already had 2 heart attacks and 3 stent placements.  Doug will be 55 in June but feels he is already old.  On the weekends he mostly just wants to sleep.  Right now I think he weighs about 300 lbs at 6' 2".  I told him about your book and he downloaded it and read the whole thing in one after noon which was very encouraging to me.  We have done the yo yo thing repeatedly with other eating plans such as Atkins and South Beach.  I lost 45 lbs on WW and have kept off all but 10 for 4 years now so I am planning on changing to your eating plan with him and hope to lose 20 lbs myself.  I do exercise regularly, he does not.  We do have a fitness club membership and use the elliptical mostly but his feet swell and that keeps him from wanting to do a lot.  This is Memorial Day Weekend and I am taking advantage of an extra day off to get organized and get busy with FTS.  I'm not sure why I felt the need to share this with you but this has been a very emotional journey for me.  I want to do all I can to help him but I know it is really up to him.  Hoping you can share some words of wisdom for our situation (thanks so much for the ones you have already shared!).  I think I could use a support group for supporters!

Hey! Ive been a type one diabetic for many many years now and I have quite a few problems myself. FTS really works within 6 weeks my sugars had normalized and my A1C came down to 7.2 from 8.9. Your husband WILL feel better and wont have to exercise to make it work. When he starts feeling better then he can work in some exercise.  I encourage you to stick with it!!!

Hi, Paula. Welcome and thanks for sharing your touching story. It is evident that you love your husband very much! : )   I found out on March 11th that I have type 2 diabetes. My fasting blood sugar was 244 and my HA1C was 11. My blood sugar immediately improved after chaning my living to the FTS mindset. When I have checked my sugar, it's been 116 to 136 and I will find out on July 1st what my HA1C is. I want my doctor to be SHOCKED because he didn't think that I would have much improvement in the first 4 months!

     Hello,
My name is Doug chappell, Paula's husband. Iam a type ii Diabetic with uncontrolled blood sugar. My blood sugar has been so high before my meter would not read it . My doctor ha told me that my cholesterol was so high that I did not have blood , (I had gravy) Both my parents were Diabetic and my brother is a type i diabetic. I have not always been this way, I was god enough to get a track scholarship to college ,but after slowing down my exercise I steadily went down hill from there. I was up to 350 pounds at one time and have since gotten down to 290. I feel with the support of my wife and friends like all of you I can lose the weight and get back in shape once more. I know it will not be easy, but I am going to do this. I have two beautiful
daughters that I hope will give me some grand children someday. I just need to make sure  I am still around to see them. I have been on this program since the 28 th of May. Ihave not checked my blood sugar since then , but I will tonight. I am sure it will be lower. THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!

Hi, Doug, and welcome!
You commented that it will not be easy. Maybe not at first, but I feel like it's easier for me now than it was before I was living the FTS life! I never cooked as much as I do now. I prefer to eat at home instead of eating out because I can make such flavorful and interesting foods. When I eat out, my choices are actually more limited than if I eat at home.  I think it's great that you and your wife are on this journey together. That will also make things easier and more natural for you. Keep in mind, too, that whatever you get a craving for can be met by substitutions!

Update on Doug, (he's the strong, silent type).  He has lost 3 lbs at the last weigh-in and is starting to feel better. He actually said he felt "good" yesterday and I haven't heard him say that for quite a while.  I really don't think either one of us misses the sugar!!!

That's good news Doug. Keep up the good work. Its cool your both on the same page with trying to loose the weight together and keep your BG under control. Just remember sugar is a poison, a very bad one!

You wouldnt eat arsenic! Although sugar probably tastes better........

That's funny that you should mention the "poison" factor.  Every time a commercial comes on for unhealthy food Doug says "It's Poison I tell you!"  His favorite line from "It's a Wonderful Life".

Give him a hug for me and tell him I am so proud of him. Also, you are doing a great job taking care of him and cooking healthy foods for him, so tell him to hug you for me!!!!

KEEP IT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:D I praise the Lord Jesus Christ for what He is doing in your life and the life of your beloved Doug...remember when I wrote you that long mail when you joined....as it was spoken so it shall come to pass that complete healing, refreshment and newness of life set apart and together now begins and Nothing can take that away! Lord. I ask that You continue to keep the flow of the blessing upon them in peace and joy as You make the way and their obedience follows~ in the name of Jesus I continue to pray. Amen.

I'm back on the forum after a few months absence.  It's hard when the one you are trying to support slips back into his non-compliant habits after doing so well and achieving such good results! :'(  I am pretty much at my goal weight but I definitely feel so much better when following the FTS WOE.  ANYWAY...after suffering more set-backs in his health, Doug's doctor told him the other day to get back on FTS and as long as he is willing, I will be here to support him too.  I must say I have missed the interaction with this forum tremendously and am sure it has grown A LOT!  Sugar IS the enemy! >:(  Looking forward to getting back in the GROOVE!
