Lean On My Shoulder / Re: I am very discouraged

Hi Doug and Umpa. Post what numbers? My carbs  or my blood sugar and weight? Ok I am game to work on blood sugar and not weight as a priority. I took only 40 units Levemir last night instead of the 50 I was on and I was 119 this morning. Not bad. My head swims with too much information. My raw food friends have gotten healthy, reversed their fat and disassemble and tell me eating our way is unhealthy. Even an MD I saw who is a vegan told me this creates heart disease. I don't know who or what to believe anymore. I am feeling sad. Thanks for your advice. I will stick to FTS even though worried.

I had 3 eggs with grated parm cheese for breakfast with a cup of decaf with a splash of heavy cream.
2:30 chocolate whey shake with flax meal and chia  (Tbsp. Each) cup of trader Joe's unsweetened coconut milk and ice.
2 pm had 1/2 small muffin (I baked...low carb flour)
4:30 small steak (I grilled on my g.f. grill).sm. bowl of Broccoli with pat of butter
6pm cup of decaf and a one-minute muffin.
Took my Levemir...hate to but did.
Even if hungry I won't eat the rest of the night.  Did not exercise today.
Was my eating on track?
thanks ahead of time for any feedback

I hear you both. The only reason I like the shakes is they feel good in my gut. I have a lot of gut issues. I can't be addicted to them. They have no sugar. I don't know yet about the results. I have to wait and see. My weight hasn't been moving much but it's only been a few days since I restarted.  Perhaps I need more patience. I remember in the book or on the CD hearing that some people don't need to each much at all. I wouldn't mind that. I know if I have a giant breakfast of 3 eggs with some salmon and Pesto I am not hungry for 9 hours! I like that. I hope it's ok to eat that big breakfast. I am a breakfast person. I know I have been feeling better having gotten the sugar out of my life. I am going to keep working at this...wanting to get off the insulting if it's stalling my weight loss...and wanting to get those pounds off to reverse diabetes. I am going to keep going with FTS. I don't use splenda or aspartame but I am addicted to the SF whipped cream. Sheesh...I won't even look back at my old listings. I can't bear it!  I wish they weren't there' LOL. I need more exercise. I forced it for 3 days and stopped for the last 2 days now.  :'(
Thanks for the help. I look forward to your replies.

Morgan,  I am defensive of them because they are so low in carb and get me full enough to get to dinner and I don't have to digest them too much.  I have been reading posts and even Umpa said to someone that the milk shake with ice and SF almond milk keeps you full and helps a sweet tooth.  I am not hungry enough to have a full meal, so I have a low carb whey protein shake...perfect.  My postings from last time are different, I wish those weren't on here. If I am remembering correctly I was making smoothies back then, even with berries.  This is only whey powder (MRM natural, 1.5 carbs) unsweetened almond or coconut milk (1 carb), chia seeds, flax meal, ice and that's it.  Perfect "mini" meal. I have this darn sweet tooth, it's awful.  I am only dropping my insulin by 2 units each day for now and testing to make sure I am still in the right target in the morning with the fasting sugar.
I fell off the wagon a bit today anyhow.  I baked muffins for my husband with lots of great, low-carb ingredients, except for the fresh blueberries and the dried cranberries.  The rest was eggs, butter, almond and coconut flour, flax meal, cinnamon, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, etc.  I had half a small one.  I will be able to get back on track for dinner.  And if I'm not hungry for dinner (I have a small steak to make), I will just have a shake.  They fill in the gaps perfectly.  I can't imagine that this is the wrong thing for my body, hence being defensive.  It makes no sense that this isn't correct for me.  I am staying below my carb levels and yes, I would like to get even lower on the carbs somehow for even more ketosis.
Your thoughts?

Hi Umpa.  The reason I do shakes for a couple of my meals is that I don't digest well, I have no gall bladder.  They really help and they fill me up, I make sure they are healthy.  I add flax and chia and even psyllium to them.  Whey protein is healthy. I make sure to have eggs in the morning, like today, 3 eggs with grated parm cheese cooked in a pat of butter and tonight I will have a small steak with lots of broccoli.  I love the books, the CD, etc.  I can't follow all of it because I primarily stay away from artificial sweeteners, dairy (I love dairy, but I eat too much of it, so I keep it out except for cheese sticks and other cheese at times) and I don't eat processed meats like the lunch meats that are in the book...like the deli platter.  I avoid the nitrates.  I guess all of that can be modified.  I feel much better when I replace one or two meals with low carb shakes, I see nothing wrong with that.  I stay low carb.  I feel as if I'm following FTS very well.  I am discouraged.  My body doesn't want to lose weight even with the right amount of carbs.  I don't see the shakes as punishment.  Quite the opposite.

I didn't know whether or not to add this on to my other thread under general or start a new topic, but this category seemed more appropriate for today's posting because I need helpful words today.  Especially regarding this insulin thing.  So, as you know, I am lowering my Levemir by 2 points each day as long as I stay below 130 blood sugar in the morning.  I got it down to 48 units from 52 last night and I'm at 114 blodd sugar this morning.  Not bad as far as the blood sugar number. I know if I can lose this weight, I can reverse those numbers and get my blood sugar more normal. BUT my weight won't come off.  Doug, you did say that being on insulin inhibits weight loss, is that correct?  And it makes me hungry and have more sweet cravings.  I think diabetes does that too, plus being on insulin adds insult to injury, right? If that is true, I would like to call my doctor today and ask him if I can just stop it altogether.  I don't know if that's wise, but I have to get this body losing weight.  All I ate yesterday was 3 low carb shakes 2 with whey powder and one with soy protein powder from Trader Joe's.  Take a look at that one please...it's the vanilla soy and it's unsweetened.  It has only 1 carb. My whey powder also has only 1.5 carbs....and for a midday meal I had a burger (grass-fed beef) that I grilled on the George Foreman grill, homemade coleslaw (just cabbage, mayo, lemon, salt, celery seed), a pickle, one carb ketchup, mustard.  I was right at 20 carbs for the day.  I hear you...only watch carbs not calories.  So even squirting the SF whipped cream in my mouth a few times shouldn't hurt, it has zero carbs.

Lean On My Shoulder / Has anyone ever done this or similar?
« on: July 02, 2013, 02:43:04 AM »
I had a cheese stick because I was very hungry tonight watching TV before bed (in my bed).  So, still hungry and having a sweet tooth, I squirted a bunch of Land "O Lakes sugar free whipped cream in my mouth like a ravenous animal! LOL....I need to get a grip!  My husband thought I was nuts!  He says, "What are you doing?"  LOL!!! I think I should go make a one minute muffin.  Doing this must be too many calories!!!

I am keeping at about 20 carbs per day with the whey protein shakes and the one meal.  I will keep lowering my insulin...hope that works!  Thank you for the support and good wishes.

« on: July 01, 2013, 02:17:20 PM »
Hi TooSweet, I am also on Levemir.  Your lows were obviously scary, yikes.  I have NEVER had a low.  Not ever.  I take 50 units of Levemir at 7pm each night.  I got it down to 20 when I lost the 25 pounds (the pounds I gained back) last year.  But here's what I am going to do.  Oh, and before I tell you, my doctor said to me "you have to lose weight and move"...I told him I'm low-carbing it.  He is fine with that.  I don't need his monitoring at all anyway.  I need my glucometer and that's it.  Yes, I must stop weighing myself, you're right.  Anyhow, I decided to keep eating the way I'm eating and dropping my insulin by 2 points each night.  I started this last night.  I went down to 50 units from 52.  I woke up this morning and my blood sugar was only 103!  That is great, considering it had been running too high.  Tonight I'm going to take 48 units and so on...until I'm off of it.  I am doing this in a way you all won't think is the right way, but it's the only way that seems to work for me.  I have decided to have 3 whey protein shakes per day (I put chia and flax in a couple of those and I unsweetened almond or coconut milk, plus my whey powder is only 1.5 carbs, so my shakes are 4 to 5 carbs each.  Then I am having a meat and greens meal.  If I get extra hungry I may add a hard-boiled egg and/or some string cheese.  I eat pickles which help too.  Lots of water.  Maybe some decaf with heavy cream.  This is the plan I made for myself.  I eat grass-fed beef burgers, turkey burgers, steak, pork steak, some cheese, fish...those are my proteins.  I have cut out all fruit, even the berries for now.  And I stopped the full-fat greek yogurt and the ricotta, even though they are acceptable.  I tend to want too much of them.
Let me know what you think.  TooSweet, I'm glad you got off the insulin.  I am surprised you had so much of a roller coaster with the Levemir because it's long-acting.  But, yes you're right.  It makes me hungry and fat.  But, I have always had the hunger problem even before the insulin.  I think it's because I had diabetes long before I had the diagnosis, which makes you hungry (diabetes does) plus I am leptin resistant which also makes you hungry.  So hunger has always been a tough issue for me. When I was on Metformin, that was the medication that made me so, so sick.  That's why I switched to insulin which made me feel better.  Anyhow, my goal is to get off the stuff.
I hope you all have a great day and I look forward to more of your replies.  Thank you for the dessert ideas.  I did see those in my e-book.  I pretty much may just have a one-minute muffin if I have anything.  I'm just giong to stick to the 3 shakes and the one meal for the most part.

I looked back on my log from yesterday.  I had 2 squares of 85% Lindt dark chocolate and when I was hungry, I had a cheese stick and a pickle.  That's a snack I have most of the time when hungry.  I obviously have to get off insulin and use my treadmill to bring my blood sugars down instead.

Hi all, thanks for the replies.  I honestly don't know how to post and reply properly, so I hope I'm doing this right.  My weight has gone up almost 2 pounds this morning, having lost half a pound yesterday.  I am going on the treadmill and bike after having been completely sedentary for months.  But it hurts.  I'm at 15 minutes total with stretching.  I have to really force it and I don't feel well doing it.  Also, if insulin makes me fat and hungry, which I know it does, I would rather get the heck off of it.  I am plenty discouraged.  I ate almost no carbs yesterday and had this weight gain.  I'm devastated.  I have a raging sweet tooth.  I write everytihng I eat in my food log and have for years.  I have FTS, the dessert book and the carb counting book. Could you please tell me how to make a VERY easy dessert for this sweet tooth? I only use stevia, erythritol or Lo Han for a sweetener. Doug, I have been making mock mashed potatoes and for the carbs on cauliflower you only have the amount for 1/2 cup raw.  I'm using a package of frozen, Great Value brand, with butter and heavy cream.  I ate 1/2 of the package last night, my husband ate the other half.  We shared a pork steak with those.  For breakfast I had 3 eggs, some salmon and pesto. Pretty much no carbs.  It kept me full all day.  Late afternoon all I had was a 4 carb whey protein shake.  Now I'm up a pound and a half.  I think I might simply stop the insulin.  Yes, I'm type 2.  If I do that, maybe I have a chance.  The hardest thing is this sweet tooth.  I have to ignore it somehow and hope that as time passes, it will cease.  I agree, Doug, it's the insulin.  I listened to your CD, maybe I have to cut portions, I can't tell what's wrong.  I do know that my body won't release weight unless I starve on Medifast.  That is painful, but it works.  It's nice to see you all again.  Thank you for being there.  I'm absolutely discouraged.

General Questions / Am I eating too much to lose-weight?
« on: June 28, 2013, 10:44:48 PM »
Hi all.  I went to the doctor yesterday and was mortified that I gained back 25 pounds since last year.  He told me my blood pressure and blood sugar are going up.  I told him I don't feel well and I am not moving.  He said, "You have to move".  So, today, I got on my treadmill (ouch, I have made myself a cripple laying in bed these last few months) for ten minutes and 5 minutes on the Schwinn AirDyne. I felt better having done that. So, this is what I ate today and I kept very full.  I am worried I am not going to lose weight this way as it seems too good to be true.  I'd like your feedback.  Here's what I had:
Breakfast:  3 fresh eggs cooked in butter over medium with grated fresh parm cheese on them, pepper.
Got hungry several hours later, had a whey protein shake with coconut milk...came to 4 carbs for the shake (don't get on my case, I like to replace a couple of meals with this low carb shake I blend, I don't digest well)
A few hours later had another shake...but this time I put a handful of freshly picked blueberries in it on top of the 4 carbs.
Then a few hours later (hungry) I had a nice .4 lb. piece of lamb I grilled on my little George Foreman grill and I had a bowl of cauliflower mashed potatoes.  I used an entire package of Great Value brand frozen cauliflower, butter and a spalash of heavy cream, blended this with sea salt.  Delicious.
It would be hard to believe I can honestly lose weight eating this much.  I feel very satisfied.
Please tell me if I had too many carbs and too much food in any way.  What did I do right? What did I do wrong?...I want to know this about yesterday too.  Here's what I had:
For breakfast...I ate a giant breakfast for some giant hunger.  First I made a juice in my juicer of ONLY greens...quite bitter, but I wanted the nutrients.  Then I had 3 eggs, 1/2 large can of salmon, homemade pesto.  This kept me full for NINE hours, I'm not kidding.  Then around 6:30pm, I had a bowl with some full-fat greek yogurt, some ricotta, a cup of Costco triple berry berries, a TBSP hemp hearts, TBSP flax meal, TBSP chia sead, cinnamon, etevia and SF whipped cream (I am against artificial sweeteners, but I had this).  I love this "meal", but it's probably too much carb ... or is it?  Is it ok if the rest of the day is pretty much NO carb?  Then I went to bed very hungry, but didn't feed that hunger.  Didn't want to do that...too late to eat.
So, my blood sugars have been high...in the 140's to 150 chronically.  I take insulin at night and with meals.  my blood sugar was a bit better this morning in the 130's, but not good enough.  My goal is to reverse this diabetes and get this fat off of me AGAIN.  I starved to do it last year on Medifast and I was miserable.
Thank you for any feedback.
your friend, Marian

I drink two of these as a meal each day along with my other low or no carb foods.  I love them and can't live without them. They are nice and filling due to the flax and chia in them.
A very quick, easy meal (or mini meal) for those of us who don't love to cook!

1 scoop MRM All Natural Vanilla (or chocolate) Whey powder (1.5 carb)
1 TBSP. Chia seeds
1 TBSP. Flax Meal
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 cup almond milk (1 carb)
tsp. of cocao powder (I use Navita's Raw Organic) (2 net carb)
1 cup or more of decaf or regular black coffee
8 ice cubes
Optional...add cinnamon (I do)
Optional...add stevia for extra sweetness, I do, but the MRM is sweetened with Stevia too.
***I also put my probiotic in this, I use a powder called VSL3 and my mutlivitamin (I break open the capsule and put in)

Put all ingredents in a blender.  I use the NutriBullet (the new, large Magic Bullet)  Blend until all ice is smooth.

Enjoy!!!

Ask Umpa / Re: Lactose intolerance?
« on: January 30, 2013, 03:09:45 PM »
Yes, Mark, I agree, I have access to raw dairy here in Eugene, Oregon, pretty easily.  I have found that it's so, so expensive, that's the problem.  I do take strong probiotics (VSL3) daily and I take digestive enzymes daily too.

As for the zero sweetener, I thought it was all sucralose, which I stay away from.  Is it not made of that?

Thank you for the replies.
