Bear Den / I'm off blood pressure meds, and have increased my HDL!
« on: September 12, 2011, 01:02:47 PM »
Had my second 3-month checkup after my phyical in March.  This time my blood pressure was pretty low while on meds (90/62).  The doctor told me to stop the BP meds and now I'm 114/74 with a 78 resting pulse rate!  ;D

I've also nearly doubled my HDL (good cholesterol) to 40 now officially putting me in the normal range for HDL!  ;D

This is all due to activity so again, if I can do this, anyone can.

For those who currently experience knee, hip, and ankle joint pain from walking try using a regular elliptical trainer (level footsteps, not angled).  With my three back surgeries (one of them a lower-lumbar fusion) my back hurts way worse when I walk and the elliptical is virtually pain-free for me.

Also get the fat burning cardio-range for you height/weight/age and stay there until it becomes so easy that you need to increase your pace/resistance to keep your heart up at that pace.  This is also good for those who have higher heart rates due to health issues (I was one of them).

Have a great day guys!

This is just a small bump in the road mouseissue. You have always been such a great encouragement to me.  It's been people like you that have inspired and enabled me to get where I am today.

Shake the dust off the shorts from this fall and press on sir! You have our support!

I also want to say that I have virtually no willpower on my own.  It's my faith and accountability that keeps me going as well as the tiny daily victories that lead to better self-discipline for me.

Hang in there!

Bear Den / Diet + Exercise (that you can tolerate) = even more success
« on: August 24, 2011, 10:04:53 AM »
I'm feeling so much better these days that in addition to my 5x/week morning cardio/resistance training I've been adding another 30 minutes on the elliptical trainer at the Fire Station where I work.  I've been doing this now for two weeks and just weighed myself again last night and lost another 6 lbs.

Let me stress that I have not taken this weight loss as license to augment my diet with additional carbs.  I know myself all too well and I cannot allow myself even one minute of diet-conscience-lapse or I will spiral downward very quickly.  What I am saying is that as we feel better, we can add additional exercise into our regimens and experience not just more weight loss, but more energy, strength, and general well-being.

I also want to say that given my plethora of health problems that if I can do this, anyone can.

Don't let temporary setbacks sidetrack you from your ultimate goals.  I have diet and exercise accountability partners (that's why I go to our community rec center to work out) and that helps keep me on the straight and narrow.  If you find yourself struggling, get some good friends involved in those areas.  Goals are nothing without accountability.

P.S. - And for the first time since I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes in 2005 my last A1C test was 5.8!!! Even though I haven't been taking any medication that puts me officially below the tolerance for actually having Type II Diabetes.  I've got a good way to go yet, but I know I'll get there.

I've also lowered my total cholesterol from 203 down to 163 and my doctor says I'll be off my blood pressure medication in the next month or two.

If I can do this, anyone can.

Bear Den / Checking back in...

It's been a long time, but I'm still waging the diet/lifestyle war!

I was in Branson, MO for my anniversary and had an emergency gall bladder surgery (not via scope, full incision) and it's been a good recovery.

I don't even remember where I was, but I can tell you this...I'm down to slightly less than a 40" waist, and I'm working out 5 days a week and the thinnest and in the best shape of the last 20 years of my life.

I got down to 245, but since working out I've been putting on muscle.  I'm back up to 255, but visibly much thinner, more toned, and the fat keeps coming off!

I eat far less, have kept to the ultra low carb diet, and have gone to very lean beef, but mostly turkey, chicken, and fish.

This new lifestyle gave me the shortest recovery from surgery ever (I've had a total of 7 abdominal surgeries and 3 back surgeries) and now even my back is in much better shape after just a few months ago hardly being able to walk!

Thank you Doug and all the rest for your support.

Bear Den / End of week 5, still losing a little every week...
« on: February 28, 2011, 01:58:36 PM »
Shirts that were tight 2 weeks ago fit awesome now! I've been wearing 44-46 inch pants and now comfortably fit into 42s!

I've had great success eating out, ordering grilled meat (not fried, coated, or sugar-sauced), ordering the right salads and dressings.

Keep it up everyone, it's more than worth the effort!!!

Bear Den / End of week #3, lost another 3 lbs.

It's still coming off! 3 lbs. in the last week and down to 261 for a total of 14 lbs. in 3 weeks.  People are already noticing the change, I'm feeling so much better, and got into a shirt I bought nearly a year ago that was mis-marked XXL and was only an XL!

Thanks for all the encouragement and support you guys, you're wonderful!

Bear Den / Re: Easier to follow the program as the days go on...
« on: February 04, 2011, 08:50:10 AM »
When there's so much documentation and testimony of how a program works how can you not stay the course? Before my back gave out (due to mostly my weight and genetics) I was halfway through a BS in Nursing.  I knew this made sense and now in less than 2 weeks I feel so much better.  The cravings have all gone away.

The truly amazing thing is that I did some simple arithmetic yesterday and even when staying away from the high-carb meal (deadly whites) I was still taking in with a greatly reduced food volume over 200g of carbs a day. Fruits, some veggies, ketchup, alleged low-carb breads, etc.

I find that it's easier to focus mentally and realizing I was eating for comfort (for many different reasons) rather than for physical sustenance was a huge factor as well.

First big test was last night.  My daughter was up for the first time with my granddaughter who is three months old and we had a party for the ladies of the church to see my new granddaughter.  There was a huge spread, with 98% being on the "no way" list. I had my diet (2g) fruit juice with club soda for my drink, I had 6 small slices of summer sausauge, deviled eggs (3 prepared with my carbless spicy mustard, mayo, and salt), and 6 shrimp.  A friend brought homemade toffee (I've had it in the past, she should go into business) and I didn't touch it at all.

You guys are my support group, but seeing the benefits already is my Tier 2 support group!

Have a great weekend and thanks!

Bear Den / Easier to follow the program as the days go on...
« on: February 03, 2011, 06:59:19 AM »
 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Every day the program gets easier to follow.  I'm not even tempted to eat carbs and have stayed below 20g daily.  I'm finding I'm getting my carbs through the things I add to my meals (small amounts in salad dressings, soy sauce, walnuts to salads, etc.) and the one 5 net gram snack bar or another palmful of walnuts candied with butter and Truvia.

This morning I made my own version of quick jerky with thin-sliced beef (8 oz. for two meals) marinated in 2 tbsp of canola, 1tbsp of lite soy sauce, 2 tbsp of spicy mustard (I'm loving finding things with 0 carbs that taste good!), and 1.5 tsps of Frank's Red Hot sauce.  Baked it low and slow in the oven and what a great thing with my hard-boiled egg and coffee!  Still waiting for the GG Crispbread or I'd have a slice of that too!  I'm eating the other half for lunch with a salad and have veggie and cheese snacks for in-between meals today.

Thanks for all the encouragement and it looks like I'm on track for another 3 lbs. this week.  Not sad it isn't up to last week's weight loss since I know that was atypical for one week.

I've already got more energy, but best of all HOPE that this new lifestyle is not only bringing me health, but a longer life to spend with my loved ones and make the difference in this world that I'm destined to do.

With a truly joyful heart,

Guy

Bear Den / End of week one and I'm very impressed!
« on: January 31, 2011, 09:00:02 AM »
Tomorrow it will be one week and I don't know if this is typical but I've lost 7 lbs so far.  I have been absolutely committed to this lifestyle change and have not deviated one iota from the book's advice.  I even went to dinner at a friend's house and only ate the meat (if it didn't have a glaze), veggies, and passed on desert.

I've ordered my GG Crisp Bread and waiting for the Tortillas to get off back order at La Tortilla.  In the meantime I'm using Romaine lettuce in place of the tortillas.

Thanks everybody for your encouraging words.

Bear Den / Thanks so much Doug, this is going to change my life.
« on: January 26, 2011, 11:33:55 AM »
Doug,

I got the book yesterday and read it from cover to cover after work last night.  I got halfway through a BS in Nursing program before my back gave out (due to my weight) and I know for a fact that this will work, but never put 2 and 2 together in regards to the hidden carbs.  My good friend Ken Stearns in La Grange, WY told me about your book and he has lost over 50 lbs. and is the thinnest, healthiest, and reversed his Type II Diabetes.  That was proof enough for me.  I'm going to buy the book for my daughter who is struggling to lose the weight after having her first child, and unfortunately she has my body-type genetics.

My wife has committed to eat what I'm eating (even though she's only got a handful of lbs. to lose).  This program is going to change my whole family.

My goal is to go from 275 down to 190 so that's 85 lbs.  I have Type II Diabetes (diet only, no medications). I'm going to post my progress here weekly.  I'm taking before photos and measurements tonight and will be setting up a blog to chronicle my weight-loss journey.

Thanks so much Doug, I know you've helped more people than I can count and I'm looking forward to adding another success story.

All here can feel free to hold me accountable and I encourage you to check in on me from time to time.

Sincerely,

Guy Pacot
