Doug that is a nice rig ya have there. Is Florida hot and muggy right now?  I remember last time we went to St. Augustine. I thought for sure I was going to melt. I was not very well adjusted to the humidity. I stayed in the ocean most of the time to stay cool.

Yesterday went hiking in the Eldorado National forest with the wife and kids all afternoon it was nice. Went swimming in one of the lakes with the dog also. I was standing on the shore about three feet off the water looking at the beautiful view. I slipped fell on my bum, then bounced into the water. We all got a good long laugh. ;D I was the first one in the water like usual. Almost drowned I was laughing so hard. I think I bruised my bum a little  :-[ Today after work I am hitting the weights.

Good for you Phil, the best exercise are the ones you want to do, not the ones you have to do :) Me....I walked up and down two flights of stairs 25 times today unloading the camper and the truck.  It's only 65 degrees at the cabin so no sweat, just a good workout. Ate beef ribs from the smoker and made collard greens as a side.

Doug, That sounds like a good work out.
The ribs sound good. Do you put anything on them? Drool...beef ribs are one of my favorites.I use a dry rub safe bet for me. I miss my smoker :'( I have a nice one in Texas at my little ranch.

I used Chipotle Pepper rub on them last night, they were great, also smoked a turkey breast. The coolest part is all the hickory I use comes from my property in the mountains.

I am always making up differant rubs, but the bottom line McCormick blend's are always better than mine.

Had a light day yesterday did a short 2o minute walk. Late schedule and a long commute yesterday.

hey phil i meant to post this before when your knees were sore..about 8 weeks ago after i played basketball for the first time in years, the next day & for about 5 days after i could barely get up and down steps...LOL... now after losing the weight it doesnt affect me at all, sooo it does get better>>> i've just been doing the same stuff i always do walking, biking, boflexing..... and yesterday i dragged out the BIG ladder and got up on the roof...sanded the gutters, hosed them out,and caulked all the seams.... that was a workout...today after the boflex i am going back up there to paint them, wish me luck, its supposed to hit 95 today :-\

i survived...and got it done in time to catch the blog radio interview..which was awesome...well Doug, since i recommitted over the weekend, reread the book...i decided to step on the scale for a midweek update.....Monday morning i weighed 226...today/Thursday 220  :o, and i still have 3 more days till "official" weigh in day, between you and me (LOL) i believe after having success in the beginning, some (myself included) may tend to let themselves slip, believing that they dont have to make as big of an effort as they did in the first weeks, i actually think the effort needs to be bigger as you come closer to reaching your goal weight & would urge anyone that has stalled to look back in their minds eye,and recapture the zest that they had in weeks 1-3,and to start from square 1 in order to achieve their goals :o   just my thoughts....Gary

You're correct, AND we need less and less food as we shrink. I eat so much less now than I used to eat it's amazing! Today I cut and split a pick up truck full of logs and when it came time for dinner I ate a small portion of macafony and cheese with 2 Sam's club chicken and spinach sausages and I'm stuffed. Don't even have room for Umpa's coconut cheesecake she made today.

don't laff...but a few weeks ago i bought "yoga for dummies" book and i just recently got to the point where i actually have been doing some of the beginner postures(the reason i bought it was to improve my flexibility) and i have to say that after only a couple of sessions my ankles and knees feel so much stronger,we'll see how it pans out,but it is very relaxing and it does stretch you out nicely....OK enuff with the girly talk...Doug,when you lost all your weight, was your gut the place that had the most fat left at the end???  because i have 20lbs left to reach my goal & i swear all 20lbs is around my waist>> don't get me wrong,I've lost plenty of inches around my waist, but like i said the 20lbs i have left seem to be all waist fat,the rest of my body is fine...i was just curious if that's how it went for you ::)>>> today walked 3.5 miles in the AM & biked around 10 in the PM>> piece of cake ;D
Title: Re: Motivate and Encourage
Post by: Doug Varrieur on June 28, 2010, 08:13:28 AM
Yes, the last place you'll lose fat is the first place you gained it...in my case and maybe yours, the gut. No matter how thin I got or how many sit ups I did I still had some stomach fat. I finally got to the point where I had to make a decision. I had to decide if I really cared enough about it to worry about it. Remember, I really dislike a daily "go to the gym schedule" it's not for me and I know I'll never be able to keep up the habit so I decided the bit of belly fat left was acceptable. I'm still walking around in 32" jeans and eating everthing I want without a damn bit of scheduled exercise.... At 54 years old, I'm happy  :)

ok doug i get it :D but riddle me this.... if i do commit to a workout routine, and do get rid of it,then afterwards as long as i stay on the FTS lifestyle (which there is no way in hell i wont) i should keep it off...correct?

Hi buddy, take it from someone who's built several companies and taken companies public....you're a quality guy and any company would be lucky to have you committed to them....Now, why do I say that? Simple, your proof is in your actions, committing to go from FAT TO SKINNY and actually doing it are two different things. As you know staying committed to the plan was and is the reason you have dropped 80 pounds. That my friend speaks volumes about your character! Here's what I suggest....play it up on your resume....use it to show your potential employer that you Gary are a team player who has the ability to take on the tough tasks with full commitment until success is achieved. Put your biggest fattest before picture right on your resume!!!  ;)

or, start the Gary Doughboy Pork Rind Bread Baking Company!

Hi Guys!

I was at my doctor's earlier this week and talked to him about FTS.
He said he approves of it because he says eliminating sugars and starches from a diet are critical for successful AND sustained weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/). And that eating plenty of vegetables along with protein and fat insures good nutrition.
I'm so glad he's supportive of the FTS lifestyle! :)
I've heard not all doctor's are.

I also talked with him about exercise.
I told him that since I started FTS, my wife and I walk about 35-40 minutes (3 miles) a day.

A funny smile came over his face and he told me that many people believe they have to exercise themselves to exhaustion in order to get a decent workout for weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/). He said, current research shows that this in not necessary!

He agrees with Doug to NOT exercise for the purpose of weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/).
He said it takes so much exercise just to lose only one pound of body fat, the work-to-reward ratio is too slow and discouraging for most people.

He says, brisk walking for 30 minutes a day is the best exercise I can do to get my metabolism in a good place to foster more rapid and healthy weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/), start building cardio strength, AND get my metabolism back into a healthy balance.

He wants to see me in 6 months and maybe take me off (or at least reduce) the meds I take for high blood pressure, cholesterol, and high blood sugar [i.e. all together (with obesity) these spell, "metabolic disorder"].
Man o man am I looking forward to that!!! ;D ;D ;D

well:) like Doug says in his car vs fuel analogy... the more you use the car, the more fuel you will burn:) carbs is the the fuel and also the FAT, so i am gonna use the hell outta my car(body) and get rid of all of that extra fuel (FAT) that i have put in it over the years, and when i get to the point where i am only filling her up when i am close to E. ask the doctor about exercising to stay fit:), tone:), & just for overall better health:) not saying its for everyone>> also not saying it should be to the point of "exhaustion" (who does that?) but i am saying that it will surely make you look & feel better:) also it will get you to where you want to be faster, and once you get there, maintain the FTS lifestyle & you'll stay there:) that being said, its overcast & breezy here in northern KY. Katie and i are off on a nature hike with the 2 pooches:) she says that she hopes it rains and we get soaked:) sounds like a plan!!!!!! later :o

I'm with you on that... More power to ya Gary!

When someone is in a physical state where his/her body can withstand the demands of rigorous exercise, it is a good thing.

As a former college football player, I understand the value of strength and endurance training.
It can come in very handy when you're working on projects around the homestead, on vacation doing physical stuff, or going fishing and brush busting to get to a remote spot on a stream. You can work (and play) much harder and much longer before even breaking a sweat.

One of my goals is to get back into similar shape that I was in while I was attending college.
I'm real and don't expect to be able to play ball like I did back then. But God willing... I'll be able to "bust brush" again without strain.

Good for you Gary! If you want to improve your recovery time you'll need to increase your stamina......cardio will do that for you. It doesn't need to be hours of it either, just get your heart beating fast for 10-15 minutes per day doing some kind of cardio..... I like chasing Umpa around the house  ;)

Wow that's cool Gary!

Basketball is a high power-output game.
Playing it for two hours against 20 year olds before getting winded is quite an accomplishment at 48. 8)

Endurance (with quick cardio recovery) takes time to build.
But if you follow Doug's advice, in a few months those 20 year olds will fall out before you do!

Peace!
Tony

I like your competitive spirit, Gary!
But remember, we're not teenagers anymore.

Be careful out there and don't blow out a knee!!!
Knees are far more fragile at 48 than at 21.
Knee injuries have put down more football and basketball players than I can remember.

I want to hear about you putting those young snots to shame for years to come! :)

 :'( what happened to phil????
anyways after a couple of months of slacking on the workout end
(i have maintained the walking, even with the cold temps,snow/ice etc.)
i started "feeling" fat again, i didnt gain any weight,i just felt flabby, 2 weeks ago i was back on the boflex, boy was i sore that 1st week, but i can already feel the difference, and i am back in the "routine"
Doug....even after years of maintaining... do you still "feel fat" sometimes?

I think "soft" is the better word. When my core muscles are tight from some form of activity I always feel thinner even though the weight is the same. A simple routine of old fashioned sit ups and push ups coupled with running in place for ten minutes is really all you need to do to maintain. I just HATE doing them!  :o

I don't know what happened to Phil. I'll send him an e mail  Knock Knock  :)
