Title: Healthy Fats
Post by: morgan on April 05, 2016, 12:30:47 AM
When we are told to increase our fat - I'm presuming healthy fats - what are they?

Avocado?
Coconut oil?

I would have added cream and butter - but is it one of the things you would increase?

I eat the fat of meat (including chicken skin) - this something I should be skipping?

Hi, Morgan! :)

Healthy fats are most any naturally occurring fat in meats or vegetables.
Avocado, coconut oil (very good for you), bacon fat, beef fat, etc..

Try to avoid altered fats that are found in processed foods like trans fats.

I've always tried to avoid 'processed' fats.

It's sort of scary what some manufacturer's add to their products.

Label reading is mandatory and you sometimes get surprised at what gets put in something simple like spices for cooking - rice flour, wheat flour (if you needed to be gluten free, would you have thought to check your spice mix?  I think not).  Imagine my surprise when I found it in my lemon pepper seasoning and taco mix seasoning.  Sugar added in liquid stock was another surprise (and not in a good way), diabetics beware.

Hi, Morgan! :)

The process that turns protein into glucose is called gluconeogenesis (GNG). From what I can glean in my research, that process will work with fats too if the body does not have sufficient protein available (also assuming the presence of digestible carbs is low).

So as long as your getting plenty of protein, eating fats should not boost your glucose. In fact, in my experience, the opposite is true. There were times I was stalled. And then added more fat and began losing weight again.
