Title: Comparing Sweetners
Post by: JETM on June 05, 2010, 06:56:54 PM
I just bought Diet Cheerwine soda from the supermarket because it said zero carbs on the label and it did not contain aspertame (aspertame gives me headaches). It contains Splenda.  I drank 3 glasses when I got home and then realized the label was not accurate because Splenda is "less than a gram" per serving.  But nowhere can I find exactly what the carb content is for Splenda.  I'm trying to figure our how many carbs I just had.  I would love to find a diet soda that has no carbs and no aspertame.

Additionally, Sweet'N Low has "less than one gram" per serviing.  Anyone know the exact #?

Stevia (in the raw)?

I have a liquid saccharin sweetner that says no carbs.  It's "fasweet Liquid Sweetener" and it's a division of Morse Co.

And then I found this other liquid sweetener called "Smoky Mountain Sweetener" by M. Licht & Son Inc. It says zero carbs too.

Doug say count all diet sodas with splenda as one carb per can.I love cheerwine,it blows up easy though. The diet rite sodas are also a good choice as well as seltzer with flavored sugarfree syrups. ;D

Flavored seltzers, no carbs, no sodium, no sugar, no artificial sweetener, it is just carbonated water with natural flavors like lemon, lime, raspberry, cherry...

I recently found a diet soda called Zevia.  It is made with, you guessed it, Stevia as the sweetner.  My grocery store carries 4 flavors: Cola, Root Beer, Lemon/Lime and Orange, but the website (www.zevia.com (http://www.zevia.com)) lists a bunch of other flavors as well.

Isn't splenda sucralose, like Zero? A soda shouldn't have any carbs from it. It's just in the powdered form that you need to count a carb on from the carrier, right?

That makes sense to me  ::)   I've been trying to stick with sodas sweetened with sucralose when I am out for a treat.  They are so sweet though  :P  Haha

It may be just me but stevia gives me a bitter taste.

The reason splenda has carbs and Zero doesn't is because of the malodedextrin and dextrose they add.  ;)

You are correct Moose, only the powdered Splenda formula has carbs. Soda sweetened with Sucralose should not include Dextrose or Malto Dextrin unless listed on the label. Diet Rite soda is a very safe carb free sucralose sweetened soda and it's the brand I recommend.
