Dr Pepper BBQ Pulled Pork
« on: July 08, 2012, 07:46:10 PM »
HI gang  ;D

I made a BBQ pulled pork today to use up a pork roast I had in the freezer.  So I went on a search for a good but easy recipe...this is what I found.  http://sotastysoyummy.blogspot.com/2010/07/dr-pepper-pulled-pork.html  Of course I used Diet Dr Pepper  ;D  This is very yummy served with Walden Farms BBQ sauce

Dr. Pepper Pulled Pork

1.5 to 2 pound pork roast
 ¼ onion, minced
 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
 1 teaspoon dry mustard
 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
 ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
1 tsp minced garlic (The recipe didn't call for this but I added it )
1 twelve ounce can Dr. Pepper (I used 1 20 oz bottle of Diet Dr Pepper because my roast was bigger)
Place pork roast, fat side up and onion in a slow cooker. Add the pepper, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and vinegar. Pour the can of Dr. Pepper over top of the pork. Cook on low for 8 hours, flipping over once halfway through. Shred the pork with two forks, cook for an additional 30 minutes. Serve with barbecue sauce (make sure it is sugar free sauce. Walden Farms is delicious with this ;) )

It has a tiny bit of a bite to it so anyone that has a sensitive tummy might want to cut back on the cayenne pepper.  FYI...it's yummy cold from the fridge the next day HA!!   ;)  It's a fun recipe though.

I have a memory of using Coke for pot roast so this will be fun to try. I always overdo cayenne especially in my cookies! :D

I love cayenne!  Especially in chocolate  :D  It's a perfect mix.  The bite in this recipe is perfect for me but some might think it's a little much.  I found lots of recipes on line that said not to use the diet but I'm not sure why...I suppose the flavor may be a bit different with all that sugar  :P

I think the reason for the "don't use diet" is that most diet sodas use aspartame as the sweetner and it isn't stable in heat.  The bond between the two amino acids that aspartame is made from breaks when it gets hot.

Good point Andrea...I don't know why I didn't think of that ???   In that case next time I think I'll add a bit of FTS zero to the mix.   ;D

This sounds just wonderful, Shawn! :) :) :) :) :)

It's on my "to make" list for after a break in the hot weather!

That's the best thing about this one Tony.  You can put it in a crock pot....no oven  ;)  It's way too hot to turn that thing on.  HA!

I've been using the BBQ just about everyday (except salad days) since the heat kicked in.
Our house cools very slowly. So I'm reluctant to have any additional heat source going.

Thursday, I'm going shopping and will buy a nice pork roast for this recipe.
It's supposed to cool down soon (like next week)... I'll give this a try then!

Thanks! :) :) :)

You can put the crock pot in the garage or on the porch.  My dad used to cook in an electric roaster in the garage all summer long.  He didn't want the air conditioner to work any harder than necessary.

My senior moments are really starting to get out of hand!
I forgot all about the electrical outlet on our covered back porch.

So it looks like we're going to have pulled pork by the weekend! ;D

Thanks Andrea!!! :) :) :) :) :)
