I saw a show on a lady somewhere in the LA, CAlif area growing micro greens. A very big production, in fact. She sold them to the local high end restaurants - the chefs love her. I plan on doing this on a smaller scale just for myself. What would 'you' use for micro greens. Here are some of my thoughts...radishes, cilantro, watercress... please add - I am trying to make a list for myself and can't think of what else to use.
Another question is when you are growing these micro greens, say for example the radishes, once you have cut off the top, do they keep on growing? I tend to think that for vegetables they quit growing more micro green tops. I think with young herbs they would quit growing, too, as I thought herbs had to get more established prior to cutting. So, it's a one time cut and that's it?

I am so doing this this summer.Seeds are cheap.I am also doing mushrooms.These are not sprouts, and have 6 time the nutrition as the adult plant.I dont know if the veggies still grow after the tops are cut.I would add italian parsely,oregano,lettuces,spinach,mustard and collard greens.Great idea enreino ;)

I've noticed that when most bulb-type plants have lost their greens, they die.
But there are some exceptions. So experiment and let us know.
I'd love to do something like this.
But here in the Pacific Northwest, much of the year we don't get much sunshine.
In the more Southern areas that have more sun and warmth, this should be great! :)

okay, so I checked out the internet and there is a place that grows micro greens - I can pass info on if anyone is interested. they named a few more: beets, chard, chia, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower. FUN FUN FUN

huh! mushrooms? how does that work UMPA! are they really really skinny small and then you eat them in the smaller stage? How do you get started? I know I can check the internet, but how do you do it. Sounds wonderful. I love your contribution of micro greens. I can't wait to get started.

Mushrooms are as easy as taking a limb off a tree(non poisonous) Drilling holes and putting the starters in the holes.Place in the shade and viola mushrooms.I am gonna grow 3 varieties.They have gotten wicked expensive where I live and I just like to grow my own food. ;)

Thank you Umpa for the link - I checked out how to make Fire Cider - what a wonderful remedy. Have you ever made this? I also love her link to making mushrooms. Do you have the logs in your back yard to put in the spore plugs?

I like amazon but shop around its spring and everybody has sales going on. I have the logs at my house in north carolina .I havent made the fire cider but its on my list.Another favorite herbalist of mine is Susun Weed she is my teacher.

I plan to look at local nurseries, if no success, will check for best prices online. I'll have to start small on my tight budget.

How will I know what logs to use for which mushrooms? I loved Gladstar - she is adorable. I'll check out Susan Weed. I have always been interested in herbs - have many books, but this is taking it a step farther than our universe. Awesome.

What grows in your yard?

apple trees, maple, oak, hickory, cotton wood, willow. Will any or all of these work?

All but cotton wood and willow I am not sure about those 2 ;)

okay, PALM --- where in this beautiful world do you live. We have about 30+ acres in the driftless area in sw Wisconsin. We build a primitive cabin - no running water - no ceptic and no electricity. Have a generator which gives us electricity and have a compost toilett we just installed last year and haul in water. There is a Class A trout stream and finally this year we are going to concentrate on catching a few. I live in se wisc. We have a mature woodland area at the cabin site - gorgeous! there are other trees, white and yellow birch. Morel mushrooms grow on our land, which we are so happy about. Mostly we hunt white tail and turkey. The fall/winter are fun times when hunting. Spring and summer we work hard and maintain the place.

Sounds idyllic. Sighhhh.... Peace and quiet. Any reason you would not have hooked up a water tank to your house?

What a beautiful place it must be where you live Ereino. I live in Southern California. I'm 62 mile from the beach, 45 miles from Palm Springs and 60 miles from Los Angeles.

My step daughter lives outside of LA in Altadena, near Pasadena. We have gone to the Rose Bowl Parade a few times already. It's spectacular. I am a princess, too, but I guess even princess's can live in ice caves LOL! Anyways, guys, please call me Ellie.

Hmmm, a water tank - maybe a future project - Sounds like a wonderful plan. I'll talk with my husband and see what he thinks. As a matter of fact, I do know what you are talking about - read about them - they have a spicket on the bottom of the barrel... Huh! That's why I love this forum - Great ideas.

I've always loved the peace and solitude being in natural surroundings brings.
Suppose that's why I love the great outdoors so much.
And why I like living on my own property, a distance from my closest neighbors.
A water tank is a MUST have (unless you enjoy toting LOTS of water).
To prevent freezing in the Winter...
Use a horse trough heater in the tank and wrap the line that comes into cabin with electric heater-tape.
Did you know that many outhouses are built over simple holes in the ground?
When the hole would fill or get to be too much to take ;) , a new hole was dug and the outhouse moved over it.
This is they way America did it for a couple of centuries (until indoor plumbing).

Australia is a very dry country. Most houses, even in the suburbs have a water tank to supplement watering the garden. When our dams are down water restrictions are put in place. The first stages prohibit watering gardens, washing cars etc. It is amazing how much dew comes off a roof without it actually raining. We don't have a problem with the freezing bit. Hehe

I just remembered something - I have lived in my house for 24 years now. The house is over 100 years old...probably 130 - it has a cistern in it. It gathered water - We have never used it, but it is an amazing feature and charm to the house. I am definitely going to rethink the water barrel at the cabin site.

It is so cool you could get off the grid.We are trying to do that in our cabin in North Carolina.Doug just bought a Pelton water generator and is installing it this summer. :)

We are definitely off the grid at the cabin. We do have a generator and it is hooked up that way for electricity. We have a window a/c as the summer months are very hot. I love the water barrel idea and truly hope to install soon. Must discuss with hubby. I remember one time we had a metal garbage can that was empty and somehow, even though we thought we had the lid on tight, it filled up. Boy, we used that water for sometime ... no...we didn't drink it - but used it for other things. I don't think we thought it was safe enough for anything else but watering plants at the time. But the water barrel is tight enough and safe for bathing and washing dishes, I would hope. Although, if it is attached to a gutter, I am not sure how clean the gutters can be with critters running around in the area...bird droppings, etc.

yea, my husband picked up a water barrel - it is a heavy duty plastic and is flat on one side so it fits up against the cabin wall. AND, we are getting loads of rain at the cabin site, so in two weeks, when we get there, the first thing I am going to do is check it out. It has a spicket on the bottom, way at the bottom, so hubby had to build a taller platform for the barrel to sit on. I can't wait to see how water we get - we do hall up lots of water for bathing, washing dishes, etc. So, this should lighten the load for us. Great ideas you all!

we will be going to the cabin soon and it sure has been raining cats and dogs lately. I wonder if the tank will be completely filled! I'll keep you all posted. We will use to shower with and to heat up and wash dishs. Will still bring up drinking water. But boy, this will sure save us the money in buying five to six or more gallons just to wash with.

okay, got to the cabin and the water barrel works, but we had the spickett open. It was hard to tell initially...so now we closed it and boy it really rained on Sunday at the cabin site. So, the next time we go up I am sure we will not be disappointed.

Yay. Glad it's working out. Most of our water tanks have a mesh plate at top to stop leaves/twigs falling in and the spigot is usually 1-2" from bottom to let anything that does get through to settle on bottom so you don't actually get any gunk, people have been known to put a filter on the tap to purify further.

Oh wow - another filter - didn't even think about that option, but we aren't going to drink it - just use for bathing, washing dishes and the composting toilett. Saves us the walk to the creek. Not that we are lazy, but there is just so much to do at the cabin site, that we try to minimize the unnecessary time it takes to do this. Thanks!

Other than all of the work involved in keeping up a second place, it is very relaxing and beautiful. We got 5 gallons of water for the composting toilett last weekend. My husband is going to devise a gutter system, V shape, so the water funnels better into the rain barrel. Next time we go up. What joy!

It sure is - 1 gal of store bought water is anywhere from $.79 to $1.00. And getting water out of the creek is too time consuming. So this water barrel catcher is going to pay for itself. lovin it lovin it lovin it!

we sure do, susie....it's fun and the people are nice. How is your daughter doing these days?

She's doing great. Her weight is up, but she's at a healthy size she should be at. She's 5'3" and 110 lbs and size 4. She is satisfied too. I told her that she gained because her body changed and it sure does for a girl at 15. Luckily she ate healthy during all this only going over once in a great while with fruit thankfully. She thanks me for changing her eating habits. She says she would be a fat teenager if I didn't. She has a tiny waist still so that's a sign of weight gain to growing in hips etc. She loves her figure now. I'm so glad to have a child happy with her looks.
