Title: My Wife Got Some Bad News from Doc last week
Post by: mouseissue on September 20, 2010, 11:45:53 AM
After living the F2S lifestyle for a couple of weeks, my wife noticed that her clothes were getting tighter and she gained 10 pounds! We both thought that was very odd and she went to see her doctor last week to discuss it.

Her doctor told her her thyroid had not been functioning for some time.
He also indicated that removal was an option though not absolutely necessary at this point.

The doctor said that since her thyroid is not functioning, she should not attempt ANY weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) program at this point including carb limiting. He said that with her condition, diet changes can actually work in reverse of expectations compared to "thyroid normal" folks.
We found that to be true first hand.

He has her taking very high doses of Synthroid medication which is a concern since over a period of time, this can have other negative health consequences.

He referred her to a thyroid specialist for more testing and treatment so that she can get the Synthroid dose lowered and enjoy a more normal metabolism. Her doctor said this specialist has helped many other patients with her condition successfully.
She has an appointment for a blood draw at a lab today and will set her first appointment afterword.

I hope the specialist can resolve this problem!

Please remember her in your thoughts and prayers!

Thank You and God Bless!

Thank you all so very much for your thoughts and prayers!!!  :) :) :) :) :) :)

By the way beebs, my wife is taking 300 mcg of Synthroid a day which the doctor says is extremely and dangerously high but needed.
Also, her thyroid is not producing ANYTHING which is why the doctor says it is "dead" and could be removed.
It's like her body's emergency brakes are locked up... No matter how hard she presses the gas, her metabolism goes nowhere!

Like most other glands, a functioning thyroid's output (even if limited) will vary throughout the day and night.
This variance allows the body to respond normally (and properly) to endocrine and glucose changes.
My guess beebs is that your thyroid must still be functioning to some extent.

Another issue I didn't mention is that the doctor said that my wife might be going thru pre-menopausal changes which would further aggravate and complicate her condition.

The specialist she will be seeing uses both herbal and pharmacological treatments.
Hopefully, this doctor will be able to help her!

I don't know what to tell you beebs? :-\
All I know is what I heard from my wife's doctor.

She is a bit shorter than I am but heavier as well.
She NEEDS F2S as soon as her body will correctly respond to it.
If this problem isn't resolved, I fear a many more health problems await her.

Since you and my wife are two different people, what may be dangerous to my wife might not be to you.

I am not an M.D., so I will not postulate how much of any drug is safe or unsafe for any individual.
Those of us without sufficient medical training should also refrain.
And although I did not see any indication, I will assume that you have positive wishes for my wife's health.

So on that note, I will consider this exchange with you about what's medically safe, closed.

Best wishes for your wife.  My husband had the typical low thyroid symptoms going on about 15 years ago and had half removed without incident.  No rhyme or reason why the one side went bad, and fortunately he did not need to go on any medication.  But it was a stressful time because you're mind tends to wander and worry until you get on the other side of it.  God Bless.

Hi, Jay! :)

Yes. She is doing very well now.
Thank you for asking! :)

It was a matter of getting her medications adjusted correctly.
Treating thyroid disorders is often quite challenging.
