Title: How To Eat GREAT At Burger King :)
Post by: Doug Varrieur on June 08, 2010, 08:45:19 AM
I hear it all the time....fast food is making this country FAT....not so my friends. french fries, sesame seed buns, ketchup, apple pies and full sugar soda from fast food joints.....Ah...that's what's making us FAT. But can you still eat at your favorite fast food place. You bet! When I'm on the road and need a quick meal it's as simple as 1 2 3

1- Buy a whopper or double whopper without Ketchup and a side salad from Burger King. Ask for Ranch dressing

2- Remove the bread and place all the meat and veggies on the salad, top with ranch dressing

3- Enjoy your meal  ;)

Thank you so much for sharing this Doug! Sometimes it is so hard breaking from the old "Let's stop and grab a burger real quick", but this
brings us a whole new fresh idea for allowing back some fast food eating and the kids do not feel ripped off so much anymore~~
We have also done what Umpa shared by bringing the Lo-carb tortilla and transferring the meat and veggies~~
Everyday we are learning more and more as we adjust for healthy life and we're loving it~~ Bless you! ....yum!

I took my kids through the drive through at BK the other morning. I ordered a sausage, egg, and cheese croissant AND a fork and knife. They thought I was nuts, but I didn't care. I threw away the bread and ate the sausage, egg, and cheese with the knife and fork! : )

I am excited to try this! I love Whoppers and have steered clear of them for years!
Thanks for the tip!

The other day I took my girls to a local taco place.  They all ordered and I sat with them...I went back to the counter, said I had changed my mind and asked for a taco minus the tortilla...they were more than happy to do it, put all of the ingredients in a styrofoam box and I ate it with a fork, it was fantastic and I didn't feel a bit deprived!

Happy Eating !!  8)

Thanks for the tip! Haven't tried BK yet, but did eat a salad at Wendys recently. I was pleasantly surprised when I looked around the dining room and saw 4 others eating the same thing.

just be careful of the dressings... read the packets... I Love Ranch Dressings... Burger King uses "Ken's Ranch Dressing" which is awesome as they are only 1 carb. per two Tablespoons so if you use the whole packet it is 2 carbs so i suggest to only use 1/2 a packet.. but like at McDonalds, they use "Paul Newman's Ranch Dressing" that packet is 9....yes, i said ***9*** carb's!!!!! ouch! ...I Love me my whoppers toooo! Blessings to all for a joyful and wondrous new year of success living the Fat to Skinny lifestyle!! Life is so beautiful~~ ...LIVE IT !! Praise the Lord \:D/

Thanks, Cindi! Nine carbs? Wow. I might start carrying my own in my purse. It's a good thing I don't eat out all that often anymore.

At Wendy's we had the spicy chicken salad, but replaced it with grilled instead. The dressing wasn't that much per packet, but they gave us 2 each (plus croutons), which can easily sabotage a person if they're not careful.

Sometimes with kids and all the running around I do, I find myself at drive-ins too often. This is nice to know that there is food you can eat there and not worry about falling off the plan.
Thank you Doug,

we just had a BK open up 45 miles away where I work...it was a BIG deal LOL  ;D When I went in, they actually have a "low carb" option, where they do not give you the bun, you still have to request they leave out the ketchup..but Oh, how happy was I! I eat a double whopper w cheese and a side salad for my friday afternoon meal..it's great :) and yes, Owensmom, I have done the exact same thing with the sausage croisant...when I can force myself to eat breakfast that is! hehehe Have great day everyone:)

all sounds good but how many carbs in that cheap fast food cheese?
Title: Re: How To Eat GREAT At Burger King :)

Each slice of American cheese is 1/3 rd of a carb  8)
Title: Re: How To Eat GREAT At Burger King :)
Post by: F2S-Awesome on May 03, 2011, 09:24:41 AM
Actually according to their websites, a slice of cheese on a Burger King sandwich is 1 carb per slice, McDonalds says each slice of cheese on their sandwiches is 2 carbs per slice, and Wendy’s says their cheese is zero carb which I find hard to believe, so now I doubt all fast food nutritional claims. I have found that generally that the better quality of the cheese, the less carbs it has, so I checked my favorite cheese, Land-O-Lakes white American cheese and that is great tasting cheese and it’s 2 carbs per slice. So that makes me think the cheap cheese at the fast food places is probably actually more than 2 carbs per slice. Kraft Deli Deluxe American Cheese (their top of the line expensive cheese) says it is zero carbs, yet Kraft American Singles are 2 carbs per slice. I also checked some of the cheap American cheeses and they were 2, 3 and some even 4 carbs per slice. One last thing I noticed was that the fat free cheese had more carbs than the regular cheese, kinda like milk is that way too. So if I had to bet, IMHO I’d say all fast food cheese is at least 2 carbs per slice, prolly more like 3-4 carbs per slice in reality.

So if I’m correct and the cheap cheese is actually 4 carbs per slice, this could get really bad. Like I sometimes get 2 double cheese burgers at McD’s and toss the buns. It’s only $1 each so it's so tempting, and filling but it each one has 2 slices of cheese, that’s 4 carbs X 4 slices, to make potentially 16 carbs, inhaled in about 2 minutes. I think I’ll get hamburgers instead and sometimes just use my own cheese

That's the answer...if you're concerned about the cheese just skip it. :)

Watching Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution recently he talked about the % of (vs. “fillers”) and the quality of beef used in hamburgers in the USA, the whole Taco Bell thing a few weeks ago, and this convo, makes me wonder what we are eating at McD’s and BK, etc. Is it 100% beef? Hmmmm. N E 1 know? Thoughts?

Hi F2S-Awesome! :)

This is why I believe it not a good idea to make fast food a staple in one's diet.
Like foods with sugar alcohols, it's for OCCASIONAL consumption only.

But if you plan to have some, it pays to do your homework (like you have F2S-Awesome) so you know, in advance, how many carbs you will be eating.

Yes good point, thanks. If had $, I’d open a nationwide chain of fast food that good for you. For people with no time, but that want good healthy food including many low carb/low sugar options. Amazing no one has capitalized on this yet, it’s a no brainer and would do billions in sales for sure.

Hi Umpa! :)

I've tried keeping low carb tortillas in my car. But they would get funky after about a week.
Maybe it's the wet climate around here?

These are all great idea! Us ladies are lucky we can carry wraps in our purse, I think Tony might have to get a murse lol for his wraps. We should all pool our money and open a FTS Fast Food place in the USA and CANADA! We can sell Doug@Umpa books at the counter also wouldn't that be something?

... Us ladies are lucky we can carry wraps in our purse, I think Tony might have to get a purse lol for his wraps. ...

Thanks but no thanks, Lynn! :D :D :D

Normally when I'm on the go for the day, I can get out to my SUV and enjoy a snack or lunch.
I will often take a small cooler and put foods like wraps, hard boiled eggs, cheeses, diet pop, etc. in it.

If I'm somewhere where I won't be able to easily get to my SUV, I'll carry protein bars, pepperoni sticks, nuts, etc..

This system has been working quite well for me so far.

It's all about being prepared! ;)

It made me think of Joey on Friends show when he carried a bag and called it a murse for a male purse, somehow he thought it sounded more macho that way haha.

Some men can carry it off and some can't - I've seen a man with a bag over his arm and it took me a while to say, Hey! That guys got a PURSE! and then again, I've seen a man with a bag and it stuck out like a sore thumb! I think Tony is the stick out like a sore thumb kind of guy.

I recently went to McDonalds and was reading the carbs on the facts sheet, the Ranch dip cups are only 1carb per pack so I asked to change the "Newmans" for the Ranch for the nuggets, The girl waiting on me asked why so I explained it to her and what I was doing..... she looked at me crazy and said "and you're eating here tryin to lose weight (http://www.fattoskinny.com/)?!?!" I just laughed and said its worked with the 50 pounds I've already lost so I think so. She didnt believe me til I showed her my start pic of me on my phone (the one I posted on here) ;D ;D ;D ;D

I've been getting lots of compliments at work and around town. When I tell them it's been easy, but I still have 40 lbs to go, they wonder from where. However, I dress better so the clothes drape nicely and compliment my natural shape hourglass/short stature over the fluffiness.

They know the fluffiness is there, but the change has been dramatic.

Watching "What Not to Wear" has been very helpful to see myself in reality and find the clothes that compliment rather than hide.  Wearing shapeless clothes just makes me look like a block of chunk.  Well, anyone who dresses to hide looks bigger than they really are.

My purchase of clothes (shopping in thrift stores as I must shop often now) is becoming more selective....as well as having more choices with the decreasing sizes.

My fluffiness is actually obvious, but it can be dressed to be a pleasant sight for my mirror and for others.

I read many years ago: a professional stylist wrote that to dress ourselves well/wear makeup if it enhances is to show respect for our self and for others. As in if we don't present our self well, it says I don't care about you...that you have to see me look a mess.

And we all know (or should by now) that presenting yourself in your best light opens doors, allows positive response/actions from others....People appreciate beauty.

Don't be afraid to be as beautiful on the outside as your are inside.  Watch a bit of 'What Not to Wear' if you need some help.

OK, off this soapbox. HA!

A nice article on dressing yourself with respect/gratitude.

Oh yes, 'your appearance reflects your respect of/toward others' was more the thought the stylist was making.
