Title: Thinking of having Gastric bypass surgery?? READ THIS FIRST!
Post by: CJ on June 02, 2010, 10:27:42 PM
Hi all,
My name is Carlyce, but you can call me CJ. I am new to this forum, but not new to the low carb way of eating, you see 7 years ago next month, I had RNY gastric bypass surgery. I actually don't regret it but if I had it to do all over knowing what I know now I wouldn't do it. I went into surgery knowing I had to eat a certain way after surgery. They really do try and teach you low carb eating. As long as I stayed under 20-30 grams of net carbs I lost weight. I had no idea it was really the low carb lifestyle that drops the weight, I thought that was just to keep the dumping syndrome at bay (google it!) I thought the portion control I gained through surgery was what helped me lose 125 pounds. I have found out over the last 4-5 years as I have begun to put weight back on it was do to the low carb lifestyle I was leading. I ate almost identical to what is advised in Doug's book and did it for years, until I got lazy...... Well, I was given a copy of this book by my MIL and read it in two days. I knew it was a gift from God. This is what HE had for me along. This way of eating works for me and I know it is the way we all should eat. I am so excited to be on the right path again. God is good. Thanks Doug for reminding me of what my body needs and how to get it back in order.......

Remember, the portion control you gain from gastric bypass is only temporary. God designed our bodies to heal and repair themselves and they do. When the portion control is gone and you eat a sweet and realize you don't have the dumping syndrome, the honeymoon is over! Feel free to ask questions if you like. I am working and in school, but will try and check in daily,
God Bless

CJ I want to thank you for being brave and stepping up to the plate as a reference point for others considering this form of radical weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/). Your advice to people in the future will be life changing for them.

Hey CJ,  Thank you for sharing your story.  My sister-in-law had the same surgery last October and dropped 80 pounds.  I didn't realize the weight could come back on after the surgery and in time.  I'm glad you are on the "right" path of eating and hope you are having a good day!  Thanks again!

I, too, had gastric bypass surgery.  Lost 140 lbs.  Looked good for about 2 years then started slowly gaining it back.  Six years later I had a 'revision' done thinking that would help me lose the weight.  WRONG! There is no substitute for proper eating!  Now that I am on the FTS plan I feel I have found the answer that has been eluding me all my life. If you are contemplating gastric bypass surgery, don't do it!  Just substitute low carb foods for the high carb foods and all will be good.  You will lose weight (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) slower but you will eliminate the 'dumping syndrome', kidney stones, and a host of other problems!

I too had Gastric Bypass thinking that it was the answer to my prayers. I lost 100 # then it seemed to stop and then the humiliation sets in cause everyone knew you had it done and why didn't it work for you. I felt like such a failure. If you're thinking about it.....PLEASE DONT DO IT!!

Hi all! Just wanted to share my story! My mother n law just had the gastric bypass surgery done not to terribly long ago. And what we've learned about the whole deal, I will put before and after pics when she looses her weight; per her approval ;D They told her that this procedure was for those who were obies? and you have to eat right! We also had a friend of ours his wife did it, and she seriously dropped the weight and I totally didn't recognize her the next time I saw her, but....she gained all the weight back, because she didn't stick to the program? Kinda like fat to skinny??? But "thankfully" she has stuck to the program, and has lost quite a bit of weight! We are all very proud of the sucess that she has come so far!

I know many people that have had the gastric bypass also and only one of my friends is still thin.  Everyone has gained at least a portion of the weight back. The one person I know is extremely thin and I don't know how she does it. At first she was losing too fast and they had to slow it down. So somehow she is still very thin but she doesn't look healthy. Noone else I know has kept the weight off. So statistics show that this is not the best way to go.

Some years ago, my wife and I had a friend that had a lap band implanted above her stomach.
Within six months, she lost over 100 lbs. and looked much better.
She also had a "paleness" (a sort of weak look) about her which we thought was odd.

A couple of years after the surgery, she still had an hourglass figure with a narrow waist.
But her hips, fanny, and thighs became VERY large due to weight gain.

Last time I saw her, she had a large bag of nacho flavored Doritos she was munching on.
Watching her walk away, munching from that bag in her hands, left a remarkable impression on me.

We lost track of her a few years back when she got divorced and moved out of state.
But if we ever run into her again, she will learn about the F2S lifestyle.

I pray that these posts will prevent others from going through a surgery that they really don't need!

I had the surgery 5 years ago. I dont regret it and have been very lucky to have no medical issues and can eat everything. But mentally i have the same issues...closet eating, stress eating, etc. I still love carbs and junkfood. I did real good the first couple years then pushed my luck and added all the junk back. Now 5 yrs later im eating just like I did before the surgery, and gaining weight back. I think if i stuck to the eating plans and exercised more i would have kept it off, but real life came into play instead. The trick is def no to little carbs eating healthy and exercise. So this plan def has the right ideas. wendyg73

Hi Wendy, welcome to the family. I am sooooo against all types of weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) surgery. When I see the billboards and ads for easy this and easy that it's made to look like your going in to get your teeth cleaned!...makes me very angry. I'm happy for you that you were able to get rid of 125 pounds and I'm sorry some of it has found it's way back to you. You've come to the right place for all the support you need to rid yourself of the added weight naturally.

I actually went to an informational session about gastric bypass about 10 years ago. When I returned, I was still indecisive about it. My dad said, "Why don't you just eat the way they have to eat and NOT have the surgery? If you think you can't eat that way, you shouldn't have the surgery anyway, because you have to eat that way long term to maintain the weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/)." My dad is so smart!

Your dad is very wise, owensmath!

Most wisdom can be found in simplicity itself.
When you forget the hype and look at something for what it is, the truth becomes crystal clear.

Sadly, our society values hype and razzle dazzle.
So few of us "younger" people have wisdom.

Hi CJ...My name is Rachel and I'm new here. Thanks for posting this!  I have been pressured by quite a few friends that have had gastric bypass or lapband procedures done who think that I should have it done also.  I didn't feel that was the right path for me, but was getting very frustrated at struggling to lose weight (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) (when they were peeling off 6 or 7 lbs. per week) and wondering if I had truely made the right decision to not have surgery....until I discovered the F2S book and read it. I am on day 3 of eating low carb and I LOVE IT!! I'm never hungry, the scale is moving in the right direction, and I don't have the energy/mood swings I used to from the constant overload of sugar. I am hoping tomorrow to be under 200 lbs. for the first time since before I was pregnant with my 2nd son (he's 18 months old).

I am not sure if CJ is here on the forum anymore but we will all be here for you for any questions you have . Hopefully you will not have bad detox ! But if you do just hold on ,dnot give in to the carbs and in a few days you will feel like a new person ! ;D

That is so sad! :'(

Most overweight people think of FAT as a "thing" that, although is in the body, it's not thought of as part of the body.
FAT is part of our bodies.
Blood vessels coarse through our body to feed living cells INCLUDING FAT cells.

Whenever a part of the body is cut and removed, there are risks involved.
These risks can range from minor infections to lethal reaction to anesthesia.

No one should EVER take such dangerous risks only for appearance sake.
It's just not worth the gamble!

This is all the more reason for us to let others know about the FTS lifestyle.
This lifestyle saves lives!!!... I know it saved mine! :) :) :)

CJ -- and Margie (and others who responded.

Thank you for sharing CJ and Margie -- I agree that gastric bypass is not the wonder cure it has been touted to be.  And I have endured countless family members (well that was ONE -- not countless), but friends, and especially co-workers who have brought me their paperwork and talked to me about having the surgery done -- and they have all gained back their weight.....except for two co-workers who are no longer with us.....

So I have this endocrinologist who PUSHES this surgery on me -- I have been going to him for extreme fatigue and he keeps insisting on two things:  #1 he says I'm depressed and need three kinds of meds to improve (wrong) and #2 he insists I should have the gastric bypass.  I finally told him the last visit I would have the surgery in January 2012 if I haven't lost the weight (I need to lost 148).....

But I will not have the gastric bypass.  I just won't....but I really have to take this weight off.  Your stories -- especially what you shared CJ about it being the low carb eating that took off the weight -- and by the way, I do know about "sugar dumpgin"...that happens to me whenever I drink say a large soda, or large glass of orange juice, etc.  Sugar in food form rarely ever causes that, but my personal physician (now retired) told me a long time ago if I already had a problem with "sugar dumping" that for sure I would have an ever worse problem with that after gastric bypass and she said for me to never consider it.  She also told me she had a patient who had had the gastric bypass and her problems with "sugar dumping" were so bad that she had to sell her car and purchase herself a little motorhome to do all her traveling in because without the motorhome and its ahemmmm ahhh "facilities" the poor woman could not even be able to leave her house!!!

I won't have the surgery -- NO WAY....but that doc keeps pushing it.  And the co-workers, friends, and the brother-in-law who pushed it on me so much during about 8-5 years ago they were all having the surgery????  They don't have anything to say anymore because they have all gained it back...(which I always do feel sad but not judgmental about that -- I'm sorry they are still having to struggle).

I know they mean well, and hey, probably the endocrinologist means well also, but there has to be a better way, and when I put down this laptop tonight and start reading this book (bought Fat to Skinny book at bookstore tonight)....I just hope and pray this is a "weigh out" for me.

Best wishes, and thank you so much for posting your story.

Elizabeth doctors give opinions.Thats what they do.Thats why we get second opinions. There are plenty of people here that have lost 148 pounds Sherripie lost over 200 pounds! No surgery and eating great!Ignore these people they are giving you bad advice. ;)

Welcome to the family, Elizabeth!!! :) :) :) :) :) :)

Umpa's so right, Elizabeth! :)
I also suggest you get second opinions.
It would be a good idea to find another primary care provider that believes drugs and surgeries are the "last resort" and not the first refuge.

Doctors, friends, and relatives, by and large mean well with their advice.
FTS provides you an opportunity to change all that by changing YOU without the dangers of surgery!

And the other health benefits of eating low carb are so worth it!
Such as normal blood sugar, normal blood pressure, good cholesterol numbers, greatly reduced cancer risk, etc., etc..

This lifestyle really does work!
Mainly because we eat so well and have replaced those "high sugar" things with low carb choices that taste better than the originals.

After you've been living FTS for a short time (usually within a couple weeks) cravings for high carb items goes away.
In fact, most of us find the high carb foods we used to love, quite distasteful.
Most of them seem too sweet or yucky from the starch content.

So now that you've made the decision to live the FTS way, we'll be here to support you in any way we can!
And all this support is 100% FREE!!! ;D ;D ;D

Please join our conversations often.
You'll be surprised at how much more you'll learn by participating! ;)

Welcome aboard, Elizabeth.  I am so glad that you have found FTS and we're looking forward having you join us on the forum.

You are the only expert on yourself and you are your best advocate.  You are the only one who has to live with the repercussions of your decisions.  That means that no doctor can force you to have gastric bypass surgery.  Your best ammunition against the doctor is to prove that you can lose and maintain your weight by adopting the FTS lifestyle.

I believe we here on the forum can offer you great support.  We are all folks who understand all the pieces and parts of the ups and downs of this big change in your life.

I'm excited for you!

Please avoid anything unnatural. And I know people who lost weight quickly for first 3 odd months after the surgery and then gained a bit or it plateaued. So even with a smaller stomach one will need the right way to eat. And problem is only carbs. Our carb intake has increased while physical activity has dropped.  Earlier during our great grand fathers time they used to walk from one village to another. There were no taps. So they used walk to village well with buckets. Today if I have to go to my local market I take out a car. So while we need less carbs we are eating more with all the fast foods.
Today a friend dropped in with his 7 and 9 year old daughters. It was easiest for me to order pizzas for them with coke and garlic bread. And when they were leaving I gave them a choclate each as a gift. Later I was thinking what will happen to the next generation.
So in this era of desk jobs we need to drastically cut on carbs.

Hi, I'm new here! What a wonderful group of people!

This topic caught my interest because a few years ago, at my doctor's request, I looked into the specifics of having the gastric bypass surgery. I didn't like what I learned. I joined an online board for those who had it done and those considering it, and after reading about the pain, the vomiting, the dumping, the regaining, and the DYING. I knew I would never have it done. Then my friend's sister and sister's husband both had the surgery. She was doing fine. He had complications and they went back "in" to fix it. He died. He was only 52. She lost some weight but has now regained most of it. My thoughts were "I'd rather be fat!"

I've been on many diets over the years and only got fatter when I went back to eating my favorite foods again. What I like about this Lifestyle Change is not having to give up my favorites but simply change how I make them! I bought the 2012 version of your book from Amazon a few weeks ago and read it in one sitting (I like to sit! LOL) There are some startling facts in there and some terrific recipes.

I had already started eating a low carb way on October 4 so this just helped me to refine and reinforce my choice. I'm already off my blood pressure medicine and my pressure has been excellent everyday!

So far I've lost 17 pounds and my husband has lost 35! I'm looking forward to reading more here, and to getting to know all of you.

Welcome to the FTS family, Val!!! :) :) :) :) :) :)

Congrats to you and your hubby for your success! ;D ;D ;D

Thank God you did not get that surgery!!!
It's one of those treatments that is more dangerous than the ailment being treated.
It simply is NOT worth the risk!

Over the long term, diets are a good way to GAIN weight.
Every diet I've every tried ended up adding FAT and pounds.
The FTS lifestyle is the only thing that has EVER really worked for me!

Now that you've learned the "secret" to REALLY losing weight and getting healthy,
your future is much brighter! :)

I'm looking forward to hearing about your (and your hubby's) journey to good health! ;)

Tony

Hi Val, welcome aboard! You are going to love it here. I can add to this forum that I have cared for and have seen many people suffer complications and die from all of these weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) surgeries. I am an icu nurse and when they make it to me they are knocking on deaths door ! I have seen more horrible complications than benefits to any of these quick fixes! I wish you the best of luck here, this group is fantastic. I have been here since June and love it ;D;D

I will definitely make sure I warn all my friends about that surgery. I have one friend who had it done and she lost 100 lbs but now gaining it back. I will tell her about the FTS lifestyle and give her links.

Its very sad the medical community is still doing these surgeries ,they are setting people up to fail instead of teaching them what makes them fat. ;)

I hope the new doctor I find is good like my last one who wanted me off carbs and sugar. My cholesterol was high but she wanted me to lose weight (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) instead of medication, I loved her!

I have 2 daughters, ages 33 and 13. My older daughter has one child. My grandson is 8. I love it when he visits. She texts & emails me photos of him often, so I'm happy to see what he's up to.

My father's wife had it done and she gained the weight back too. Very dangerous way to loose weight and it won't teach you proper eating.

I agree Jay, It apparently does not teach you anything but how wrong of a decision it was to do in the first place. Some insurance plans will cover this procedure but will not cover classes on how to keep it off.

I was having trouble with cravings tonight so I decided to hop over here for inspiration and happened upon this post.  I watch a lot of tv shows about morbidly obese people because I can relate to them (I weigh over 300 pounds).  On a lot of the shows I've seen, the people are putting all their hopes and dreams on gastric bypass surgery.  Most of them need to lose weight (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) before the doctor will even perform the surgery on them.  I've lost and gained a lot of weight in my life and am at the second highest weight I've ever been.  I'd never have the surgery; I knew someone that died from complications of gastric bypass surgery.  Plus I've heard a lot of things about the nasty side effects.  Of course, I can die from being overweight as well.

Kayleen Sherripie here on the forum lost over 200 pounds,no surgery. I have met alot of people that have had gastric bypass and they all  gain the weight back because they are not taught how to eat and what makes them fat. With Fat to skinny its a lifestyle change. We replace all your favorite foods with fat to skinny friendly replacements.Cycle broken there are no foods to add back to gain the weight back.If you have read dougs book you know what makes you fat.You can do this and we are going to help you.Your hand in mine we will get you through this ;)

Stick with us, Kayleen! :) :) :)
We'll help you shed that weight FOREVER if you really want it gone!

Many of us here (including myself), have lost and gained enough weight to equal a small group of people's total weight.
By addressing the cause of why we're fat, we can do something about it.

Whatever you do, NEVER give in to this type of surgery!!!
Like Umpa, I've only heard that bad things eventually happen to those who have it.

When we eat too many carbs, our bodies will convert the added blood glucose to FAT.
Strangling the stomach will NOT fix that problem!... Eating the FTS way, will! :) :) :)
Not too mention, FTS will make us much healthier at the same time! ;D ;D ;D
