Girly Girl Talk / Xylitol Side Effects?
« on: April 09, 2011, 10:23:37 AM »
So, I was wondering if other people have the same issue with xylitol as I do?  Everytime I've used it (usually in my coffee) it gives me really loose stools.  I was wondering since it's used in so many recipes here in the desserts if that decreases if it's cooked with?  It affects my husband the same way.  Or does your body get used to it?  I'm kinda not complaining, it fixes the other problem I've been having since I started my new lifestyle (constipation). :P  Just wondering about everyone else's experience with it.

I feel ya!  Last night we went to Texas Roadhouse for dinner.  Have you ever had their rolls?!  Sweet white bread rolls with cinnamon butter...ugh.  So I had a small steak with a salad (no croutons) and broccoli - NO rolls.  Then my husband picks one up and just mows it down.  I held the course.  But to give you an idea of what a carb freak I am/was, I could tell you what kind of bread just about every restaurant in town gives you with your meal!  Good on all of us for staying strong!

Has anyone tried these?  And if so, are they any good? Or does anyone have another option for jelly, that's something I miss some.  Thanks!

Gail remember that eggs usually count for at least 1 carb depending on your eggs.  But if you eliminate the yolk it is 0 carbs ;D

Ooh - I didn't know that!  Thanks Mimzy!!  ;D

That's a super popular thing out here!  And while I have not tried it, I have been told it is AMAZING!  Think chocolate with a little smoke and salt.  If you like bacon and you like chocolate, I think you will love the combo. One of my coworkers is a bacon freak; he is going to test run bacon brownies (Not FTS, oh well). :) :)

Ask Umpa / Turkey Soup
« on: April 03, 2011, 08:38:15 PM »
Hi Umpa,
I'd love your input on my soup I made this evening.
Boiled down 1 turkey carcass and picked clean bones (about 1-1/2c meat) then used the broth for the soup.
     1/4 large onion, finely diced
     3 celery stalks, sliced
     12 oz sliced mushrooms
I coarse grated about 1/2 a small zucchini into my bowl and poured the soup over it.  This made easily 4 servings, maybe more.  Are there any suggestions you can make for lowering carbs?  I know onions are higher, but I think the flavor is important and I didn't use very much.  Oh yeah, and it tasted fabulous since here in Colorado we went from 84 yesterday to 32 today! ???  Gotta love spring in Colorado!

Katary!  Not nice lol :P.... and Beebs - I was so tickled to see you were in Sandusky!  I grew up there!  I don't know if you go back there in the summer, but Cedar Point is the BEST thing ever!!!  I'm guessing it's not open yet.

Glad you're back Alex!  Keep on keeping on and you will be just fine.  I worked in pharmacy for 8&1/2 years before switching careers, and yes every single medication on the market has side effects, some mild some severe.  It is absolutely a personal decision to weight risks vs benefits and make a choice that is right for you.  Obviously you are planning on this being short term to simply keep your blood sugar controlled until you reach the point of your body being able to do it yourself.  Bravo to you for looking ahead to the time when you won't need ANY of those nasty meds anymore!   :)

Welcome Eileen,
It can seem a little overwhelming at first, but really it's not!  Read the book, then read it again.  As Tony said, it's all about reading labels and portion control.  I am only in my second week so we are in this together!  Keep your carbs under 20gms and make some simple substitutions and you will be just fine.
I am a HUGE sugar freak and chocoholic and after the first week of sugar detox I am feeling really good.  The recipes on the message board here may just be life savers!  It is important to see how things affect you, I had a mild headache for the first 5-6 days from detox and I have discovered that xylitol sweetener causes stomach upset for me.  Drink LOTS of water to help with the headaches, and keep doing that after detox too.
Just ask any questions here, everyone is super helpful and completely supportive!  Enjoy your new life!

Lean On My Shoulder / Re: Blood test results
« on: March 30, 2011, 12:09:44 PM »
Thanks Doug for the info - I didn't do fasting for that test either.  He did not put me on medication, and yes I am positive he said that was my bad cholesterol level, he said I needed to get it down to 100.  He is the one who suggested FTS to me, and he told me as long as I continue to follow FTS I will not need medication, everything will go down on its own.  He did suggest plant sterols also.

Thanks to all for the support and boost!
