Title: 10 Week Stall
Post by: morgan on June 18, 2013, 08:50:34 AM
I have had enough and need to get tougher.  For the last 10 weeks (10 weigh ins) my weight has stayed the same.  My clothes are heaps looser, I look smaller but the (insert rude words here) scale stays the same.  I have checked my portion sizes, eaten when hungry, no added carbs, etc etc and generally stayed between 10-15 carbs;  though the last 3 days I upped it a bit (still under 20) just to shake it up but no change.

So I have decided to try to keep carbs as low as I can (under 10 - won't be zero as we don't have zero products here), no sweets/sugar alcohols/no flax or almond products, and to keep food straightforward and simple.  Apart from maybe a morning coffee with cream switch to herbal tea.  And getting on the torture device they call a treadmill for a minimum 15 mins a day and really push that water.  I am soooooooooo peeved.  Oh and Yes - change the (another rude word) battery on the scale in case that is the cause of all this angst.

Hi, Morgan! :)

Your body size decrease (by your clothing fit) is telling you that you're losing FAT.
And if your body is in the process of firming muscle, that can make it "seem" like your not losing weight.

Remember that the scale weight (besides FAT) includes, muscle, bones, and internal organs.
And considering that muscle is heavier than FAT, that scale number can't be completely trusted to reflect your progress.

Now that you're lowering your total carbs to below 10 and maintaining portion control,
give it a few more weeks to see if that scale number changes.
If it doesn't, that means carbs are sneaking in somewhere and we'll need to look closer.

You have the right mindset honey!!! You are locked and loaded and cannot be deterred! Blast that darn scale, maybe it's stuck? If your clothes are fitting looser and you're look better...forget the scale, maybe it's time for a new one? You keep it up, your body can't fight you for long...that fat MUST give in sooner or later!!! Maybe you've built muscle you didn't know you were building like Tony was saying! Wouldn't that be a pleasant surprise :) But heck yeah way to go on the weight you've lost so far!

Well I started that  getting tough bit this week, carbs are about the 10 mark (today 12 as I have been at my daughters and new grandbaby 2 days - its a bit trickier when most of your ingredients are at home - and dinner out with youngest daughter tonight. And as a side note - you don't get your monies worth if you are eating low carb out.  For instance, my daughter had chicken parma - chicken snitzel with tomato-based sauce, slice ham and melted cheese, a handful of fries and a side salad.  The plate was overflowing.  I ordered the roast of the day (pork), skipping the gravy and asking for a little sour cream instead.  I got something that I'm sure was pork, but roast it wasn't.  A small baked potato that was going to go to my daughter, but she was too full, 2 x 2" strip of zucchini, a small floret of broccoli and a few sliced carrot (which wasn't going to be eaten anyway).  There was a difference of $2 my being the lesser.  I think you could see more plate that actual food on my plate.  I am just sick and tired paying lots of money for something I can make at home for so much less.  On my way home I was thinking I should have asked for the manager and asked him if he would have paid $19 for my meal, cos I surely wont.  Next time I will treat my daughter to a meal and I'll sit with a coffee.

I have had cravings like you would not believe - like I don't believe either.  Sugar alcohols must be the abosolute pip. Just as bad as actual sugar.  I'm thinking it is the sweetness of things that I crave.  I had  about 3 strawberries yesterday and again today and they were like a little slice of heaven, but too many carbs (3.5). If aiming for 10 that's a big chunk.

Hi Morgan, here's the trick to eating out. Prior to arriving call the restaurant and ask to speak to the chef, if they won't let you speak to the manager. Explain to the person you're speaking with that foods which effect diabetes are extremely bad for your blood sugar and you'd like to have a plate made up for you which include the items which are safe for you to eat. Everyone understands the word Diabetes but many don't understand the words low carb. I've never been turned down and in fact have always had a spectacular plate. People really do want to help if given the chance. Many establishments post their menus on-line so seeing what their ingredients are is pretty simple.

If you can't make those kind of advance arrangements and are simply walking in, do the same thing on the spot. Ezplain your situation to the correct people and watch the magic happen  ;)

About your ten weeks stall,  do as you plan but tony and doug are right about you gaining some muscles might have made the scale look the same in reading to you so keep positive ok? ;);D8)

Well I did the 14 days of no sweets, treats, baked goods - the scale moved 3lbs.  With all the giving up I did, I would have thought it would have been more.  I'm wondering if the SA were actually at fault with my stall or whether it is something else.  I thought I might do a week of exercising daily (as in walking - out or treadmill) or a week without dairy perhaps.  The exercise part is a bit hard when doing nightshift as after I wake up it takes me a few hours to get motivated and then I off to work again.  Nevertheless, I will see what I can do.

Maybe you're right on the sugar alcohols, maybe you triggered your body enough to kick in...I'll tell from my experience with the first time around, I did that once, I took out all sweet and sugar alcohol and did only 10 carbs and I lost a few, but when I went back to 20, the few I lost came back for a couple days...but then it started melting off again, just a warning in case the you see the scale pop back up, in my experience it comes right back down. You hang in there...I betcha you'll find a trigger.

Great advice Taby! I have to agree with you on that as I have also experienced the same event with the sugar alcohols and how much consumed.

I've been having a think. Maybe lack of SAs weren't the reason  my weight moved (as I don't really have that many) dropping to 10 carbs daily might have done the trick.

Hi Morgan, dropping to ten carbs per day absolutely put your body into Ketosis (burning fat cells for fuel) and I bet you didn't find it to difficult  ::) I' can stay under 10 net carbs every day with ease. Did dropping the SA's also have an effect? Only one way to find out...stay under 10 net carbs and add some SA's back into your life (if you want them) and see what happens. If you stall again drop them. Congratulations on breaking your stall and dropping those 3 pounds!  8)

Congrats on losing those 3 pounds, Morgan! :) :) :) :) :)

If you start exercising, be aware that the scale might mislead you for while.
That's because as we lose weight (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) and exercise, our bodies will take on fluids to replace the fat that was burned.

Those fluids (mainly water) are heavier than fat.
And so is the muscle gained through exercise. ;)

Title: 6 month stall?
Post by: madoctor on May 09, 2014, 03:38:21 PM
Morgan:

I saw your thread about the 10 week stall you had last June.  You mentioned trying a few 10 carb days.  Would you mind sharing your daily menu.  I've lost 90 pounds then completely stalled for the last 6 MONTHS.  I joined FTS a couple of weeks ago and would love some advice.

Thanks,

madoctor

PS the only reason I started a new thread was because of the following message I saw when posting.

Hi madoctor - you have done brilliantly losing all that weight.   I had to check my notes as to what I had eaten - I tracked everything.

For example -
I usually had 100g bacon (1.2c), 1 egg (0.7c)and mayo (0.1c) for first meal (whatever the time may have been) = 2c
Snack was usually 30g brazil nuts 0.2c/cheese 0c
Coffee during day made with 2tbls cream 0.6c
Some roast chicken 0c
Zucchini/broccoli/capsicum/spinach mix 2c
bbq (sf) 1c
Strawberries 4c

Total of 9.8c

Another day - 2 egg omelette/cheese/ham/tomato/fetta 2.9c
coffee 0.6c

zucchini/broc 2c
chicken wings with bbq (sf) sauce 1.c

cheese kransky grilled 0c

snack of some cheese 0c/brazil nuts 0.2c/boiled egg 0.7c (I was on nightshift)
coffee with cream x 2 1.2c
Total of 8.8c

Another - bacon/egg/mayo/cheese - 2.1c

meatballs x 4 1.6c
cauli mash 3.0

chicken wings with butter and sf BBQ sce - 1c

snack of - brazil nuts/cheese 0.2c
coffee with cream 0.6c

Total of 8.5c

At that stage I had given up all sugar alcohols (only sweetner was in sf bbq sauce), flax, almond flour and all sweet stuff including soft drinks (diet).

Continue the good work madoctor.  And PS - welcome  :D

Thanks Morgan.  That was brilliant.  Gives me a great starting point.  I have to and WILL break this stall, it is driving me batty >:(.

I know I can do less than 10 carbs a day just needed a good starting point, so THANK YOU again.

All of you are so welcoming here.  I'm loving it!

Thank you Susie.

Folks I have another "issue"  Was doing great the first 2 weeks then restarted vigorous exercising (weight training/running etc).  My hunger levels have skyrocketed and I'm craving "the stuff" ( my code for carbs).  Have NOT given in, yet.

I'm fine when I just walk (3 fastish-5 miles easy pace)or do moderate level calisthenics or even very light weights.  Does this get better?

madoctor,

That used to happen to me shortly after I finished my early morning, daily 5-mile brisk walks.

Cravings can actually be caused by dehydration or the body's increased need for protein after a workout.
Right after your workouts, drink a tall glass of cold (ice) water and a low carb protein shake.
Then, take your shower.
By the time you get out of your shower, you should not have any cravings.

This has worked for me for years! ;D

Thanks Tony!

I have been drinking about 100 oz of water everyday because its just become a habit and something I started doing when I was heavier.  I like the idea of a low carb shake.  I usually wait before I have anything until after my shower (and usually get distracted by work).  So I'll try this.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.
