General Discussion / Re: ebook question
« on: April 26, 2012, 08:18:06 PM »
All the FTS ebooks are in PDF format, the Fire will read PDF but it needs to be transferred from the computer to the fire.   8)

Will Nook read the PDF format? I just bought the counter and the updated FTS book.

I just saw this article in US Weekly: http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-body/news/dancing-with-the-stars-gladys-knight-ive-lost-60-pounds-2012254

Apparently, Gladys Knight lost 30 pounds in 2 months on DWTS. Kirstie Alley did too. In fact, just 2 years ago, I was pretty active, watching what I ate (triscuits, anyone?) and actually ballroom dancing myself, and I kept my weight at a decent and steady level. I also remember dropping about 10 pounds and SQUEEZING  ::) into size 8 jeans. But I also remember "dieting REALLY HARD" to get there and thinking "wow, this was a LOT of work. I don't know if I can do this again".  Fast forward to a couple of years later. The dancing is gone and I sit on my butt in front of a computer, working on a Masters degree, and I put on about 20 pounds from that great, constantly active ballroom dancing weight. That's because, the activity was NOT the answer.

Here's my point and what I realized for myself, especially with my own experiences and when I hear about these "wonderful" stories of people who move 8 hours a day and just "drop so much weight!"

Are you ready? Here it is....I think this is NUTS!  :o  Sure, I could kill myself with exercise and drop some weight too. BUT...here's the thing..I don't want to.

BUT...here's the REAL issue... The excessive exercise is just a band-aid on the REAL problem, which is my SENSITIVITY to CARBS and SUGARS. So while I can exercise my butt off (literally) I still haven't fixed the REAL problem. Furthermore, with a family history of diabetes (my Dad had a kidney transplant 2 years ago and is insulin dependent) and a hypoglycemic my whole life (including a chubby childhood) I have ABUSED exercise  :o.

Exercise, for me, is just a coverup. Sure, I LIKE to exercise. I'm currently hot to try a BodyPump  :-* class at the gym because I like it. I also like Zumba. BUT, the REAL issue, at the end of the day, is CARBS an SUGAR  >:(. I could easily end up one of those sort of lean people with that "pooch" that won't go away and STILL develop a disease because I didn't address the REAL problem. Well, here's where I address the REAL problem.

So now, when I see these "I lost 80 pounds working out all the time!" stories, I think "yeah, right. You still haven't fixed the REAL problem".  Fixing that problem is what I'm starting to do now.

Yea! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

General Questions / Re: If your not counting calories...
« on: April 26, 2012, 07:39:08 PM »
not to mention,if you are here, well you probably have plenty of stored carbs already in your body that are just looking to be released!

I know this is an old thread, but I found it when I did a search on "calories" and I want to chime in here.

As quoted above, THAT is what I need to remember when I do this. I'm always thinking "oh, I"m STARVING MYSELF!"  It's that dumb diet mentality that I've had for so long that's messed my head up. How about I let my body burn it's own fat for fuel and feed it what it needs? This is a new idea for me.

I'm in the upper Midwest (Indiana).

Doug, I will watch for the carb creep. I think this was my issue last time. It's easy for me to overeat peanut butter so I will hunt for the soy butter. Or, I could not eat it at all.  :D

Hi Waterlilly! :)

I find that mixing soy nut butters with natural (low carb) peanut butter 50-50 makes an awesome PB substitute.
Although the net carbs are half that of the PB alone, they still need to be watched closely.

To beat "carb creep", I find it helps to MEASURE everything and write it all down BEFORE I eat it.
This also helps with portion control and avoidance of "grazing".
I've been doing that every day since I started FTS back in August 2010. ;)

That's a good idea Mouseissue. I'm not a fan of "grazing" but rather 3 good meals that make me feel full and nourished. I've always felt like grazing never gave my digestive system a break anyway.

How about a hero YORKIE sniffing out the hidden sugah in children's houses. The more I live FTS, the more I see carbs everywhere. My friends are becoming aware of it, too, especially now that they're eating with me.

OMG - I LOVE this idea!!!! ;D

I agree. The more I think about low carb, the more high carb stuff I see. It's kind of crazy.

When my kids turned 18, I told them that 18 only got them 2 things:  the right to vote and adult sentences if they got into trouble with the law.

I have 5 daughters.  Two of them followed a traditional path:  college in 4 years, careers, marriage, kids.  The other three took longer to accept adulthood.  I think we parent to the best of our ability and agree that eventually we all need to embrace our pasts and move on.

While I was a responsible kid, I had an extend adolescence myself. I'm a GEN X-ER and I think it's just indicative of our generation. Andrea, I SO AGREE with the idea of embracin the past and moving on. That's what I'm doing right now!

Waterlilly, put something on top of the GG, if not they are pretty flavorless. I like Kraft 1/3d less fat cream cheese and FIFTY50 fruit spreads on mine as well as the I.M.Healthy unsweetened soy butter and FIFTY50 fruit spreads.

Get used to internet shopping, it's the bomb!  ;)

Thanks Doug. Peanut butter is my weapon of choice but I will check out the soy nut butter you guys keep talking about. It's super easy for me to overeat the stuff.

We have a Whole Foods coming in to this area and a few smaller boutique health food stores so I will comb those for low carb stuff. I might have to go with the internet though.

Thanks Sarah. Drinking LOTS of water is #1 on my "doing it differently this time" list. It's also helpful to know that I'm not alone. Detox here I come!  ;)

What a nice idea for a show! OF course, nobody is screaming or waking up at 4am to work out for 8 hours straight. The major networks would probably say there's not enough "drama" in it (or blood for that matter). Of course, you're not helping them sell high carb garbage either during commercial break.

Have you ever considered doing a PBS special?

Wow again! Thanks for the support. I feel like you're all wearing sweaters with big letters on them as "Team FTS" and you're shaking pom pons! One of you just did a backflip! Cool!

OK, I think I get it. I will give the wasa to the geese because I don't like them (they're annoying and dirty and mean). With any luck, it will kill them because its wasa. HA!!   :D  (I do love animals and would never harm one of them. But I wouldn't mind making them sluggish like its made me).

Just got my GG Crispbread in the mail today. Crackers by mail...it's a first for me.

I think what I will do is set my third/fourth days on detox for a weekend. Now that I know the headache and other stuff is part of the deal, I will just go forward with it.  With any luck, what won't kill me will make me thinner.

Thanks everyone! Nice discussion boards.

Wow! Such awesome advice! I've been on another low carb board (which shall remain unnamed - ahem  8) ) and I never got this kind of support!  Let me see if I can cover everybody's great advice and info here....

Sarah -good to know!  Yes, this was my problem last time. Good advice about the peanuts or one piece of the SF candy. I can vouch for the nastiness that happens when you eat too much. Let's just say I wouldn't light a match in the room   :o

Doug - It's OK today but I ate a little over my regular carbs to stop it. I guess I freaked out. I will jump back on it.

Hi Umpa - I looked for your "ask Umpa" link and couldn't find it. I'm still exploring this site though and I know it's here somewhere.

Andrea - I am just in the first few days. I guess I expected this.  But another thing that Doug said which makes perfect sense is that eating enough and then allowing the body to use it's own fat stores to cover the difference is an excellent idea! I guess I'm going to have to feel icky for a while.

Another issue I had today was a low grade headache. I took some drugs and had a diet Pepsi and a full caff coffee, but even that didn't help. I finally ate a slice of 9 net carb WASA crisp. I did order the GG Bran Crispbread. They're waiting at the Post Office for me and I can pick them up tommorow!  ;D

So you're all saying keep going eh?  I must say that deep down, I KNOW that this is the way I need to eat. Like Doug, I too am one of the "special" people but that's OK. I will also soon be one of the "healthy" and possibly "size 4" people too! So if I have to be "special" to get there, that's OK by me!  :D

General Questions / Icky/weird stomach
« on: April 22, 2012, 07:45:55 PM »
Hello!

This is my first official post on these boards so this is an introduction and a question!

I've read Doug's book again (I've had it for about 2 years now) and I sure makes a lot of sense to me. He makes low carb much more accessible than many of the other low carb diets. Even the recipes don't look too difficult, especially for someone like me who is constantly putting food together as meals and always uses the microwave to cook everything (I hate to cook!)

I do have a question and I'm hoping you can help me. I've noticed something when I start low carbing. To be fair, the first time I did LC, I really botched it up and ate WAY too much food in general, especially protein. I gained weight. This time I'm going to do it right and count my carbs more carefully.

My question is this: I get this weird, icky feeling in my stomach after a low carb, high fat meal. For dinner tonight, I sauteed some scallops in butter and nuked some broccoli with cheese and some jalapenos (I like hot stuff) and ate them together. I added more butter to the scallops and the broccoli and I split the meal in two so I can have it again for dinner tomorrow. I'm not "hungry" right now, but my stomach feels kind of odd. Almost like its expecting a bunch of wheat products or something. It just feels unsettled. I took a pro-biotic and I'm hoping that will help.

I had this problem last time, plus I always felt a little on the hungry side. I'm guessing it's because I didn't eat enough fat, which I had been conditioned to avoid over the years of dieting. For the record, I'm 35, in relatively decent shape considering, and I have about 50 pounds to lose. Anyone who can shed light on this would be most appreciated. Thanks.
