Okay, so I was talking with my husband the other day and we were talking about flax seed meal. Crushed up golden flax 'seed.' I think it is generally a great product. When you read about it, I don't see much wrong with eating it. He seems to think that since it is a 'seed' and he compared it to apple seeds that are toxic, that I should stay away from it, as it may also even cause kidney stone issues. I generally listen to what he has to say, but I don't feel the logic in this one and he isn't a 'seed' expert in regards to the 'components, enzymes, toxic, non toxic' attributes in every seed on the planet. So I ask the FTS folks, what do you think.....?
-
I am a herbalist. Here are the facts.Flaxseed is wicked high in omegas. But until it is heated the omegas are not released,so sprinkling it on yogurt or a salad is useless.Making bread or baked good releases the omegas. So cake made from flaxseed is actually heart healthy.Apple seeds are said to be toxic but I have ate them and I am still here.As well as Comfrey, which is great for menopause, I drink 2 quarts a week. ;)

So adding milled flax seed to a protein shake does not provide the benefits promoted? I did not know that. I guess I will continue to use them in my OMMs, but not in my shakes. Thanks UMPA. As always, a wealth of information.

Wow UMPA, I didn't realize that at all. Thanks for the quick reply.
-
I should be dead too umpa lol

Hi, Ellie! :)
Not ALL seeds are toxic.
Consider sunflower and pumpkin seeds.
Flax seeds fall into this category.

I do eat pumpkin and sunflower seeds. love them in my salads.

We've been making pizzas with almond flour, but all out now, trying flax seed meal next.
-
SusieO - can you give me the recipe for the pizza crust with almond flour and then with flaxseed!!! thanks. I had one that I put on the forum, but I'm not sure I care for it that much. Thanks.
-
I'm still perfecting the flax seed recipe, but here's the almond one.
Crust
1 tbsp almond flour(my daughter, Mary, likes hers with 2 tbsp)
1 tbsp Parmesan cheese
1 tsp oil
1 large egg
Preheat oven to 425
Mix all thoroughly. In a non stick pan cook batter like pancake, both sides until lightly browned. Place from pan to a cookie sheet for more than 1 pizza or pie pan for 1 pizza.
Top with sauce, veggies, meat. top with mozzarella cheese, then Parmesan and lastly garlic powder.
Bake in oven for 15 minutes. Cut into 4 pieces. Carb counts depend on your toppings.
Pizzas I've made:
Pepperoni, sliced olives, onions, mushroom.
Walmart great value Alfredo sauce, chicken, broccoli.
Ham, very little fresh pineapple(we are maintenance), a few cashews.
(If you want to try these, please look up your own carb count)
I made 8 pepperoni pizzas and froze them on a cookie sheet for a couple hours, then transferred to freezer container. Mary prefers to have them fully cooked, then froze so she can pop them in the microwave. She says they taste good that way.

Thank you so much. I am going to give this a try. Sounds wonderful!
-
You're welcome

I gave it a try and really love it. this past Sunday I made six crusts and froze them and brought them to work. i'll defrost in microwave then add the toppings and then place in the toaster oven. everyone at work loves how it smells and are jealous lol! I sometimes have a salad with it or just by itself. Thanks so much for the recipe. I am hooked! Have a nice day Susie!
-
So glad it worked out for you! We still eat them ourselves. I'm going to make chicken alfredo pizzas today.
-
That gives me an idea for lunch - I brought in chicken so that will be my topping along with some cheese. GREAT idea! How do you make the chicken alfredo pizza!!!!!
-
I need to try this ;)
-
Here is my favorite way to make chicken Alfredo pizza. I smear 2 Tbsp Alfredo sauce on crust, add small cooked pieces of chicken, sprinkle with garlic powder, then top with 2 more Tbsp Alfredo sauce, then sprinkle on Parmesan and bake for 15 min in 425f oven.
(If ADDING BROCCOLI, ADD WITH THE CHICKEN)

I love pizza! :)
-
I do too, but not every day, lol
I skip pizza for a meal & eat a handful of nuts or a salad sometimes
Mary does not get tired of them like I do
We both have we love everyday, and those we don't
-
This sounds really good. I am going to have to try in near future. Today I just popped one of the pizza crusts into the toaster over to let it get crispier and then cut into four pieces, one small can of tuna and added seeds and avocado pressed into it along with a dab of olive oil. blend it with a fork and then top on to the crust. This crust is very versatile in its usage because it is so flavorful.

Wonderful, getting more good ideas now!

Yea! So...have a good day - I live in SE Wisconsin, supposed to get into the 40's but currently, this morning, it is snowing :D ;D :o :-[ :D oh well, at least in 40's. They say around 60 on Sunday.
-
Hope it warms up there soon Ereino!
-
We are in jersey and boy has it been an awful winter here on the east coast we just 6" of snow on Tuesday 😳

Thanks for the information on the flax seed meal. I have put it on salad, didn't know it was useless there. :) My favorite way to ear flax seed meal is as a muffin in a mug. It's very easy, makes a great afternoon snack, and is a great source of fiber. :)

Brrrrr Stephanie

Hi Stephanie - too bad about the 6 inches of show - that's ridiculous! hoping the warm weather comes soon. Yes, I love the one minute muffin - I tried making a mini loaf in order to get a more rectangular slice - I cut them down and toast them. Yummy!
-
bdiane it has to be heated to release the omegas. My favorite for flaxseed recipe is brownies. The recipe is in the Fat to Skinny Bakery book.If you dont have the book let me know and I will post the recipe ;)

Ereino, What a great idea. I haven't tried to make it as a loaf. (My husband usually laughs at my steaming ,ugly, mug muffin after I dump it onto a plate. It is pretty ugly.) To toast it would be nice for variety.
Umpa, I would love your recipe. I've been pretty limited on what I've been eating. I have a bad habit of getting into a routine(because it's safe and I don't have to worry about going over my carb limit). It would be smarter to have more variety, so I don't fall off the wagon. Although, I haven't fallen off, yet. I'd have to look at my calendar, but I think I'm on day 52.It's hard to believe it's been almost 2 months. It's gone pretty fast. My weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) has slowed down, but my body feels like it's changing. I'm really just grateful to have any success at this point. Everything I've tried before FTS was not working at all, very discouraging. My first tumor showed up on my thyroid. I've been worried about my thyroid function. They've done several tests and said my thyroid is fine. But, my gut says differently.....
Thanks for the advice,
Diane

Toasting the one minute muffin is the only way to go. I cut it on it's side after you dump it on a plate. Let it sit for a while to cool down and cut it and have about 5 slices. It smells really good, too, when you toast it.
Umpa, please post the recipe.....please please please please please.
-
Enreino you have 250 posts how about I just send you the Fat to Skinny Bakery Book? :D
