Dear Doug, I've been drinking a couple of glasses of wine each night...pretty good size goblets. Will the wine affect my weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/)?

Can I drink on a low carb (http://www.fattoskinny.com/low-carb-diet.htm)/low sugar diet?
Here’s the lowdown on hooch. Alcohol will burn as fuel before FAT. It goes into the liver on one side a martini and comes out the other side a triglyceride, blood fat. Now I’m not saying you need to cut out the booze altogether…but… if you’re on my program and your weight is struggling to come off and you’re drinking…cut back until the weight starts to drop off. This way you’ll find your personal alcohol benchmark. For me drinking became a thing of the past. My tolerance level is simply too low. For you it may be a drink or two a day. Experiment and make adjustments as needed.

I've noticed my weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) is stalled, mi wife tells me it's because of my beer. Is that true?

Where does the sugar come from in beer? It comes from the grains, Barley and Hops. You can make good choices however and keep your beer to a minimum. Look at the difference between Guinness and Michelob Ultra for example. Be sure to add your counts into your daily total.
Beverage Net Carbs Sugar
Accel 2.4g ¾ tsp sugar
Amstel Light 5g 1 ¼ tsp sugar
Aspen Edge 2.6g ¾ tsp sugar
Bud Light 6.6g 1 ½ tsp sugar
Bud Select 3.1g ¾ tsp sugar
Busch Light 6.6g 1 ¼ sugar
Costal Light 3.9g 1 sugar
Coors Light 5g 1 ¼ tsp sugar
Corona light 5g 1 ¼ tsp sugar
Guinness 17.6g 4 ½ tsp sugar
Heineken Light 6.8g 1 ½ tsp sugar
Labatt Light 8g 2 tsp sugar
Labatt Sterling 2.5g ¾ tsp sugar
Michelob Light 11.7g 3 tsp sugar
Michelob Ultra 2.6g ¾ tsp sugar

Mikes Light Lemonade 11.2 oz 6g 1 ½ tsp sugar
Miller Lite 3.2g ¾ tsp sugar
Milwaukee’s Best Light 3.5g ¾ tsp sugar

Hi Doug,
I received your book 2 weeks ago and am feeling GREAT! Boy what a difference, my head is clearer, I'm not hungry all the time, I have more energy and oh yeah, my jeans are very comfortable fitting now. THANK YOU
I am curious to know what wine has the least amount of sugar as I do enjoy a glass or two of wine at night.
I read in your book about beer and mixed drinks but couldn't find any info on wine.
I look forward to hearing from you.

As discussed in the thread above....it's not the sugar that causes the main concern, it's the alcohol that metabolizes into triglycerides (blood fat). So even though most wine is low in sugar you still must be mindfull. Their are wines high in sugar as well such as Port and certain dessert wines. Good rule of thumb...if it's "sweet" it has sugar in it.
Vermouth, Dry 1.4g ½ tsp sugar
Vermouth, Sweet 4.5g 1 ¼ tsp sugar
Wine, Red (4oz) 2.0g ½ tsp sugar
Wine, White (4oz) 0.9g ¼ tsp sugar

what about cannabis ????? lol
for medicinal purposes ;)

Say hello to the munchies Gar.....
-
Well I am thrilled to learn there's no carbs in Vodka or Tequila. WOO HOO!
-
What about cooking with wine or beer. Does the alcohol cook out and therefore reduce the carb count?
-
yes to the wine, maybe to the beer. I make Marsala and Sherry wine recipes all the time. My guess would be the beer used as a boiling liquid would be OK as long as you don't drink it after :)
-
Welcome Prosperity! If I can be of assistance let me know. I have a column on the homepage called ask umpa where i help you convert your favorite recipes. My favorite wine to cook with is Marsala. :)
-
Thank you Doug and Umpa! We use the beer in our chili which gives it a special flavor and has won awards!
-
Well Prosperity i will be looking forward to your recipes! I love a man that can cook! Don't be shy! ;D

Doug:
I don't drink wine often but when I do I like dessert (sweet) wines, of course, says the sugarholic. lol My favorite is Chateau Morrisette's Sweet Mountain Laurel which is a sweet white wine. Does it matter that it's a sweet wine even though it's white? Is it still .9 net carbs or does it need to be a dry wine? My hubby is really frustrated with me that I won't drink any since I started the program except my birthday weekend. He likes our romantical nights to include wine. lol
-
Just leave some apple cider vinegar out for a while! ha
-
very funny owensmath lol :P
-
i was wondering the same thing & its been weighing on my mind for almost 3 decades now:( if you know the answer please tell me so i can finally rest in peace knowing the answer:) thanks dude!
-
Should we configure that answer in metric or standard?

It's always had to get actual numbers from wineries so I suggest you go by taste. If its a sweet dessert wine then chances are it has a sugar content from the fermentation process. According to the web this is the phone number for the winery- (540) 593-2865. Give them a call and ask them if they can give you a sugar count. ;)

I always google anything I want to know carb count in. sauvignon blanc is my favoritr white wine.
I discovered on google it has about 3 carbs so that is what I go by.

I think it's rotten that alcoholic beverages aren't required to post nutritional information on their labels. What's up with that?
I'm not a big drinker, but my favorite beer is Moosehead and I see conflicting carb counts online. They list anywhere from 5 to 13 or so. >:(
-
Over the past month while working on our home maintenance in the Florida Keys I added 1 can of Busch non alcoholic beer per day into my plan for a treat while working. I should'nt have done it
I GAINED 5 POUNDS!!! :o :o :o
The beer didn't taste that darn good >:( >:( >:(

Well, that just sucks. They need to come out with a diet beer. :D :D :D I mean, one that actually tastes GOOD. I haven't been brave enough to try a Michelob Ultra yet. I could barely stand the regular one when I tasted it years ago. I might have to splurge and have a Moosehead while in Canada at Epcot ... but just one. ;)

I'm back to diet Root Beer :) The cool part about FTS is the 5 pounds will be gone in a couple of weeks ;)
-
My co-worker said drinking 3 beers the other evening put 5 pounds back on him.

The body will extract sugar from the path of least resistance. It's easier for your body to remove metabolize fuel from intake then from stored fat. Remember EVERYTHING we eat and drink turn into 1 of three things in our bodies; a FAT, protein or carbohydrate. Of course Carbs then metabolize into blood sugar (glucose) and what we don't burn we store as future fuel...FAT.
I hear it all the time...1 beer won't hurt, 1 glass of wine won't hurt, 1 martini won't hurt. The fact is it does hurt....one turns into 2 turns into 3 turns into everyday.
Alcohol WILL derail your weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/)......so will alcohol free beer. :o :o

Hi Sherrie Lynn! :)
Having an occasional drink is fine. But, be careful.
Alcohol causes elevated triglyceride levels in our blood.
When that happens, FAT burning stops cold until our systems metabolize it down to lower (normal) levels.
So if you find your progress slowing or stopping, loose the booze! ;)
