Title: Holy batflaps AGH!
Post by: zombiegirl74 on April 25, 2011, 11:44:04 AM
So, really, I am loving losing weight...(stuck on a plateau..grr) and I am looking GREAT in my jeans...but what the heck do you do about all the loose skin??? It is EVERYWHERE! I have batflaps on my arms, belly and worst of all my thighs..it looks awful and I am mortified over it.

We have a free natural hotsprings here that I adore..but everytime I think of putting on that swimsuit..I see the skin on my thighs roll around and blech! I end up just sitting on the side and watching eveyone else.

There are really cute tops and dresses I would love to wear, but that dern skin on the bottom of my arms kills me, I have sooo much!

Am sure I am probably being too self concious..but really..is there anything outside of surgery to fix it..even a little? Or am I destined to wear only capris and t-shirts the rest of my life for summer?

Hi Renae! :)

Water is the best natural way of helping skin keep it's elasticity (especially during weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/)).
It will help reduce this problem during future loss.
Drink at least 64 oz. of PLAIN water EVERY day.

Short of surgery, I am unaware of anything that will remove loose skin.
My wife is considering surgery for the loose skin under her arms from her weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/).

If anyone else out there knows of something else that works, please chime in!

Doug says that the loose skin is the spoils of war  not much we can do about it . I have not been in a bathing suit in 13 years so I guess I will probably not get in one again .

zombiegirl74 I feel just like you . Have you exercised since you were losing I know that we can feel some of the loose skin with muscle if we work out hard but will still be left with cellulite & some skin like Tony said we just got to deal with I do believe .

MOre important to me is how I feel and how I look and feel in my clothes ! Only 1 person would ever see me naked and he loves me fat so  ;) unless I was in the hospital  ;)

I understand and I feel for you. The guys have it a bit more easy because we can work out and fill the "new bag" with muscle. Ladies can too I suppose but big muscles on a chick,  YUK!

Stretched skin is just that stretched skin. It happens regardless of what is stretching it, muscles or fat. ( see Arnie below) Unfortunately when the elasticity point is reached and breaks we're stuck with the result. Surgery is always an option but don't make that choice easily, give it lots of thought. Surgery is surgery even when they call it minor.....it's major.

Hi! In response to the comment on the hanging skin. There's only 2 choices, excersize or surgery. But excersize will only go so far. That's why I try to excersize as I go.

Doug is absolutely correct!!!

Anytime a doctor cuts into your body, it's a big deal!
One mistake, and you may suffer dire consequences!

In the past, I've lost a lot of weight without exercising and had flabby skin to go with it. This time I've been exercising regularly and it's made a huge difference. Good luck and don't let a little skin discourage you from going out and having fun. Being healthy is what really matters. :)

LOL Umpa! Those are funny looking critters. We have them where I live and I've seen them a few times at night. They have the weirdest eyes. Great flaps for gliding though!  :D

AHHHH! That is SO funny Umpa! I have actually joked about being the world's largest flying squirrel...able to glide in one giant leap bwahahahaha

On a more serious note...to answer a couple of you on here:
On the first half of my weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) journey, I did not excersize. (shame on me, because I bought an eliptical, and never got it out of the box!)  It came off so fast!
This second leg however, my eliptical is up and running so to speak, and I have dusted off an old flame of mine...my bicycle! Actually, I traded my old one in for a new one. Me and one of my dog went for a ride the other day, and he was sooo happy, so was I!
It's definatley a lot easier to get twenty minutes in on that than my elipticle, but am still using the elipticle on cold days...spring isn't quite set in here in good ol' Wyoming ;) Not up to every day yet, I have to ease my lungs into the extra work, but we are making progress.
I am still trying to drink my 8 8oz glasses of water, sheeew! That is still a challange for me..but it gets easier as time goes on. Thanks everyone, you all are so wonderful! Peace!  8)

Fat ,miserable & unhealthy or

skinny ,healthy with a little wiggly skin that is hidden with clothes .

I think I will take the 2nd option  ;) ;D

Exercising definitely gets easier when you get some of the weight off initially. I'm exercising a lot now, but not so much for weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/). When we moved to Montana, we started doing more outdoors things, so I just want to be better in shape for that. It's scary being in the middle of a lake in a kayak with your children and not knowing if you have the strength to get them to shore.

I exercise to keep my hormones in check. ;)
Title: Re: Holy batflaps AGH!
Post by: zombiegirl74 on April 29, 2011, 12:22:44 PM
I just have to take excersize slow because of my lungs, I had major pulmonary embolisms due to hormones 4 years ago, If I do to much and get winded, my lungs get inflamed, and full of fluid, AND if I'm not careful, I get an upper respiratory to go with it. Yay. But, as I work on it, my lungs get stronger all the time :) SO! no hormones for me, only diet and excersize from now on!

So I'm gathering from all this that exersize and water may keep the "batflaps" away? Or is it that one might be losing wieght too fast for the skin to retract?  I can see how muscle could fill some of it out but not enough, unless your entering CBBF.

Welcome Novoflux  I think that if we have alot of weight to lose we are gonna have some skin as Doug calls it the "spores of war " Is that right doug ?
The less exercise you do the more flabby skin we will have  but unless we walk around naked no one will see it but the one that loves us .

Batflaps...love it!

I can tell you that thankfully with FTS you lose slowly enough that it's not that big of a problem. I'm in my 40's and lost 200 pounds and thankfully I don't have an extra person hanging off me. I think it's those plateaus we all complain about. I think it firms up during that time and then we start losing again.

That is a fantastic way of looking at plateaus, Sherri! :) :) :)

There are a lot of things going on within our bodies while we're on our weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) journey.

I firmly believe that it also applies to those of us who lose weight (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) slowly.
For some, our bodies may require more time to do those things (like mend our skin).

Novoflux,
Our family was in Ontario for a hockey tournament (surprise, surprise, surpirse) last winter. It was beautiful.

My father, grandparents and cousins are from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia!

Welcome to the FTS family Novoflux .  I'm from Southern Ontario.  If you need help with finding products that you can't find in your local stores, check out www.thelowcarbgrocery.com (http://www.thelowcarbgrocery.com).  They are located in Markham, ON.  They have everthing mentioned on the forum and more.  For online orders shipping is $7.99.  If you spend $100 shipping is free.

As far as batflaps, while you are losing weight, use Bio Oil on your skin, it will help with the elasticity.

Good luck with your journey to a thin, healthy life.

:'( I'm too poor to do this life style change!! I don't own a credit card never have and with my husband not working, i really want to change but when I run out of the stuff I can eat theres not much left but to partake in the stuff I bought for my family to eat!! One bleeding bag of almond meal was $14 something and it was a small bag.  :'( I would love to buy good sliced meat all the time but I can't this blows big time...guess i will have to try it some other time...

You can still do this on a budget. You don't have to make all the fancy stuff, just follow the basic rules. Meats, eggs, green veggies, etc....

It is sad that all the cheaper foods are full of carbs . My neice is on food assistance and to make it strech she does have to buy bread ,rice things that go further . It is very sad ,but I do understand  . Kraft mac & cheese is a lot cheaper then FTS mac  & cheese , even though it is terrible for you .  Hope it gets better for you ,my husband's hours have been cut again . We lost our home last year  because he lost his job Dec/09. Hope this not what is going to happen again .

Good Luck to you & your hubby

I would never spend $14 for a bag of flour,I spend $4. This is not expensive.Flaxseed is about $3 a bag at any grocery store. The Bakery book is for treats, not everyday food.Remember meats and greens. ;)

Try an other health food store for almond meal.  I've never seen it that expensive.  I doesn't have to be organic.  I know we can't buy things as easily as our American friends, but you can get ground flax meal at Bulk Barn very reasonable.  As everyone has said, the baked goods are for treats, not for every day eating.

Hi NOVOFLUX :)
When I started FTS, I was on an EXTREME budget! I'm a single mom of two kids, and worked only part time with a car payment, and outragous rent. I PROMISE you that you CAN do this! Even on FOODSTAMPS!! I stayed the course, and lost an amazing amount of weight...drink lots of water though :)
I have such FAITH in this program! I wish everyone I know would try it lol

As for the bat flaps...either they have tightened up...or I got used to them...not sure which. lol I actually went to a WATER PARK in august and had the time of my life! Even in my bathing suit in front of thousands of people ;) Thanks for the encouragement and support guys  ;D

I am off the one-year's "plateau" As Doug pointed out..not really a plateau, since I had a lot of sugar in my life...but I didn't gain!! (yay me!)
Now I'm on day 7 of my return to the FTS lifestyle, and I'm FINALLY off of my detox..whew! that was tough. But now I'm so energized, haven't lost any according to the scale...but my clothes are definatley looser hooRAY

So please, please, please, don't let your budget get you down...you CAN do this!! We are all here to help you! God Bless and message me anytime ;) ~Renae

Hi Girls!!

Sherri... thanks so much for posting this:

"I can tell you that thankfully with FTS you lose slowly enough that it's not that big of a problem. I'm in my 40's and lost 200 pounds and thankfully I don't have an extra person hanging off me. I think it's those plateaus we all complain about. I think it firms up during that time and then we start losing again."

It made me feel so much better. I have been losing...I am excercising as well. I was always a very round compact fat person, and now it's like someone is letting the air out of the balloon. I am droopy and squishy all over. I am drinking a spinach smoothie every morning for the retinol benefits and more water and green tea than I can hold... but I am terrified of looking like a melted candle... with bat flaps... forever.  ??? My daughters have jokingly called my tummy a "marsupial pouch"... poked at it and asked me where I put my baby Kangaroo. It was cute at first, but now I am a little scared.
I am just over 30 pounds down with a goal of 90 or so more to go.

This is an interesting older post that I haven't seen before.  I can give a bit of advise about the batflaps.....My weight is 100 lbs lower than my highest weight (though I need to drop about 10-15 lbs).  Ya'll are soooo right.  EXERCISE and WATER.  It's an older tape but it really works if anyone wants to try it.  The Firm Volume I ~ Susan Harris is the instructor.

As far as eating lower carb being too expensive?  I find it costs quite a bit less.  Just keep it simple and don't get pulled into thinking you need all of the "convenience" foods.  Eggs ~ Tuna Fish ~ Purchase your meats in the mornings when the stores like Food Lion discount them (sometimes twice making them 1/2 off) or Sams or Costco in bulk.  Bring it home and section it out for the freezer.  Purchase frozen low carb veggies at Kroger for $1.00 per bag.  You don't have to have the more expensive treats, bars, shakes, etc.  It also helps alot if you don't buy the crappy food for others in the house.  Add a potato or brown rice to their meal if they want the carbs ~ They don't need the Little Debbies either!!  This has been my experience anyways  :)

Welcome to the FTS family, Mare!!! :) :) :) :) :) :)

Be sure to drink AT LEAST 64 to 80 ounces of water everyday.
That will help keep skin cells hydrated and reduce loose skin issues.
Drink even more if you exercise and/or work to perspiration.

BTW, FAT TO Skinny is NOT a diet!
It's a lifestyle eating plan where we substitute healthy low carb foods for our old high carb favorites.
Doing this, we don't feel deprived and can stay on course for a lifetime! ;)
