Title: Is there such a thing as too low in carbs?
Post by: Rhonnie1965 on February 22, 2013, 08:02:23 PM
Hi everyone.  I  usually don't post, but read a lot.  However, I did post a question the other day and it might have been in the wrong place.  Anyway, I can't thank you enough Doug for your book!!!  I've lost 13 lbs in 10 days!! woo hoo  My question is this.  As I've gone over what I've been eating each day, my carb count is around 15-17 per day.  I know your book says around 20.  I just want to make sure I'm not doing it wrong.  I got your book and read it until the end.  Then I went into my kitchen and cleaned it out!  That was the best thing i've ever done.  The sugar detox ended a couple of days ago and I have tons of energy I thought I'd never have again!  :)  Anyone that can help me with this question, it is much appreciated.

Rhonnie

Hi Rhonnie  Here is the post where you asked the question the other day.  I think the answer kinda got over taken by all the welcomes  ;D  http://www.fattoskinny.net/index.php?topic=5175.0 (http://www.fattoskinny.net/index.php?topic=5175.0)

It sounds like you are doing exactly what you should be.  Congratulations on the success you have had already!!

As I tried to answer (probably not very well...Haha)  As long as your body is receiving all the nutrients it needs.....low carb is very healthy for us.  It has been proven over and over.  Your body has changed from using carbohydrates as a fuel source to using stored fat.  There are even studies coming out now that our brains function way better when using healthy fats such as coconut oil as fuel instead of carbohydrates.  http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/healthscience/2012/January/Coconut-Oil-Touted-as-Alzheimers-Remedy/ (http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/healthscience/2012/January/Coconut-Oil-Touted-as-Alzheimers-Remedy/)

Just be sure you are balancing your meals so that most of your carbs are coming from nutrient rich veggies on the FTS approved list, take a good multi vitamin and drink lots of water.  Listen to your body and find when it is truly hungry and only eat then.    You are doing great  ;)  You are doing about what a good average day for me is like.  If I need to lose....I have to usually drop lower than 15 net carbs though.  I am pretty sensitive to carbs though...... but can maintain great at 20 net carbs with an occasional 25 net carb in there as long as it isn't often.  But like I said in my other post...I'm a diabetic so someone that isn't could maybe find a higher limit once they have reached their goal.  I'm happy where I'm at with my carb counts on a daily basis.  I have found that I don't need the extra carbs.  There isn't much that I miss that I can't replace  ;D ;D

I hope this answers you question at least a little  ;D

You're doing well in keeping your carbs low. I read in some other post here that some of our people keep their carbs almost close to zero so don't worry. Carbs are not essential to the body but healthy fats and proteins are so keep doing well ;)

thank you, toosweet and jay12.  this gives me relief.  I usually eat about twice a day.  I'm very carb sensitive.  My mental clarity and energy has gone through the roof lol.  I'm loving it and I don't feel like i've given up anything.  I miss none of the "old foods".  Replacing them has been the key to me knowing I will eat this way the rest of my life.  Thanks for your help.  It's much appreciated.

Hi, Rhonnie! :)

I read your post and responded with a welcome. But somehow, I read right past your question.
I apologize for that... Must have been another one of my "senior moments". ;)

Twosweet and Jay are correct and offer great advice.
Did you know that eating at or near zero carb makes our bodies work better?
It's true. And it's why you're feeling so good right now.

You have a great attitude.
That will be a big help to you in reaching your goal. :) :) :)

As you go along, you will find that participating in our discussions often will help you stay on course.
I'm looking forward to hearing more about your FTS journey to a new skinny YOU!

Tony

Thanks Tony.  I appreciate your help.  It has been such a relief to get answers to my question.  I've been reading a lot of posts on here, and that has helped with other questions I have had.  I wanted to tell you that I'm keeping your wife and you in my prayers!  I hope she gets better soon!  :)  Looking forward to getting know everyone on here.  I believe support is a huge key in this.  Thank you again!

Hi Rhonnie, I hope to see you posting often, it's VERY therapeutic to rub elbows with fellow addicts. We all hold onto each other by sharing our stories, experiences and recipes  ;)

Hi, Rhonnie! :)

Thank you so much for the prayers.
But my wife has been doing wonderfully since she got her thyroid meds properly adjusted.

And you are so correct in saying; " I believe support is a huge key in this.".
Since the FTS program flies in directly in the face of long accepted conventional "wisdom" about calories and fat,
we have to constantly support one another.
At times, even our own families can make it more difficult to stick to it.

So please avail yourself to us here.
We'll stick with you all the way to your goal and beyond! :) :) :)

Tell me about Rhonnie,  my mom doesn't understand and is critical of what I am doing.

I'm sorry to hear that jay12.  If someone hasn't read the book, they do not understand.  I couldn't believe it, when my husband jumped on this with me.  He hasn't lost  much weight.  I think when he's at work, he eats what he wants, but I don't really know.  I just love the support he gives me at home.  That makes a big difference.  My youngest son was doing this.  Now he does it halfway, as he calls it.  lol  I said either you're on it or not.. not halfway.  THat's what is so great about this forum.  We can get a lot of support, as you already know.  There are just so many critics out in the world, that will be negative, even when a person is so much healthier.  I haven't even lost half my weight yet, and my aunt told me you don't want to lose too much weight.  i thought ??????are you kidding me????  then i just realized, we have to do, what we have to do to get healthy.  I don't care what they think.  However, being your mom feels this way, maybe you can break it down to her.  I never found it so easy as Doug explained it in his book.  Now, tell me about jay12 :)

Just wanted to say that I noticed that I actually feel better on the days that eat the lowest carbs therefore I concentrate on eating very low carbs.

By listening to your body "talk" to you, you can help it stay healthier and happier! ;)

I feel best and lose best at 10 grams or less per day. I always worried it was too low (when getting preached to by the other Atkineers for the last three years) but I now know to listen to my body - it knows a lot (as long as carbs/sugar aren't involved)! I lost two lbs today! Yay! I lose a few, stay there for a week or so then drop again. Weird. As long as the trend is downward I'm happy. There's no way even a muscular (or curvy) woman of 5'10" needs to weigh 195 lbs so the fact that I'm down to just under 190 this morning made me very happy! :-) I put on my Old Navy (they tend to run small on me) size 12 skinny jeans today and they weren't as skin tight as last time lol. I can actually breathe in them and sit lol. The muffin top is much smaller too (haha). I'm on my way!

I'm so happy for you Happy2bthin4me!!

I'm very sensitive to carbs myself and have always had to stay below 15 a day to lose any.  As long as I am eating mostly healthy real food I don't see where the problem is  ::)  Haha

You go girl.... You are doing great  ;)

Lol Umpa! Most of my best friends are 5'2" or shorter lol. :-) I wonder why that is??? I am handy for reaching stuff on high shelves though haha! Otherwise it's prob more of a pain then anything...I disguise weight gain well and it's so hard to not justify a few extra lbs! Well I've justified a LOT of extra lbs lol!
