Title: Lap Band Surgery in a Seed? Docs Rave About Chia!
Post by: mouseissue on May 31, 2013, 11:59:54 AM
Hi, Gang! :)

Here's an interesting article about the benefits of chia seeds,
why overweight people are often malnourished,
and the role of refined carbohydrates in that malnourishment;

http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/healthscience/2013/May/Lap-Band-Surgery-in-a-Seed-Docs-Rave-About-Chia/ (http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/healthscience/2013/May/Lap-Band-Surgery-in-a-Seed-Docs-Rave-About-Chia/)

I have used chia seeds on occasion in recipes.
But now, I'm going to enjoy them every day! :) :) :)

Hey, Everyone!!!

How much do you put in shakes/muffins?  When using Chia, should I decrease/omit another ingredient?

Umpa (and everyone) please share your shake/protein drink recipes...  Gotta come up with something for breakfast other than Isopure protein powder - been doing this for b'fast  (5 days/week) for the past several years, and now my tummy/gut is not handling it well.

Doug/Umpa - are you guys still in NC or have you settled down in the Keys for the season?  Soooo excited to turn the A/C off down here  in S. Fla (Palm Beach County).  Actually opened the windows recently for a few days...then temps/humidity went back up...then opened again yesterday and today - temps/humidity going back up this week and a/c will once again be purring, but sooo looking forward to Florida Fall temps...SOON!!  Actually, the "snowbirds" arrive before our lower temperatures do!! :) :)

Honestly, does anyone anywhere have good consistent weather?  At the moment we are in spring with summer just around the corner.  The other day it was all 4 seasons in one with the main being pelting rain and arctic winds, intermittent with blue sky and hot sun.  Today is glorious but heading towards hot.  I hate hot.  Isn't there anywhere where it's wonderful and CONSISTENT?

Welcome OrsinPeach55! I am Umpa ,Dougs wife if I can help you please ask.I have a column on the homepage called ask umpa where I can convert your favorite foods to fat to skinny friendly.Enjoy the forum :)

Romarc we left North Carolina yesterday and landed in Alabama to do some Bass fishing for Dougs birthday .Then December 1 we will head back to the Keys. Its still too hot in the Keys, but I am glad the temps are coming down.My shake is really easy.Enreino turned me onto Hemp powder and I love it!Just chunk it all in a blender.
2 Tablespoons Hemp Powder
8 ounces unsweetened almond/coconut milk
6 drops Zero
4 strawberries
6 large ice cubes
1 tablespoons chia seeds
This is wicked filling! I also use soy protein powder, but I like the hemp better :)

I've been reading ... The Great Cholesterol Myth by Dr. Jonny Bowden and Dr. Sinatra and they touch on chia seeds as they are high in Omega-3's.  As we produce 2 other omega-3's in our body,  they need the other essential omega-3 in order to work properly which you can find in chia or flax seed.   Amazing that this little tiny seed can be so powerful.   Wonderful stuff.

I've never tried them. Thinking I should throw some into my daily diet for good measure. :-) I saw a decent hot cereal recipe with them in there a while back...I'm gonna go look it up now...

Happy New Year, Michelle!!! :) :) :) :) :)

Long time, no see!... I hope all is well with you and yours.

Chia seeds are wonderful hot or cold.
I like to add a tablespoon to my low carb yogurt to get those omega-3s.

If you like tapioca, you enjoy this;

Adding different extracts (other than vanilla) to it will give you variety! ;)

I use chia all the time! I've created a hot cereal by combining a few different recipes. It's ground flax, almond flour,  protein powder, chia seeds and cinnamon,  vanilla and ginger. My protein is chocolate so that's the flavor right now.  Mine comes out at 6gm net carbs (my current protein is a little higher in carbs than I'd like) for 1/2 cup mixed with 1 cup of 0 carb almond milk. Just heat it, let it sit and there ya go!  Super filling! I just make up a big container of the mix and keep it in the fridge.
I also make chia "pudding". You just mix a few tbsp with milk of choice and flavorings of choice, let it sit (I've found overnight is best) and voila! Chia "pudding"!
For you yuck texture people - you can grind it down too! It still works and absorbs liquids.

Umpa, unlike flaxseed that needs to be warmed to release the nutrition, what about chia seeds.  Can I just sprinkle them on a salad or is there a better way to release the nutrients in them?  Help!

You can put them on or in everything and they release the omegas. When you put them in liquid though they act like a thickener, your shake can turn into pudding quick! Start with one tablespoon in a shake. They are wicked filling!TooSweet had a recipe I think she called it Bubbletea, she loves them ;)

Hi everyone! Sorry I have been sort of off the radar for a while. Tony, thanks for the recipe, I will have to try it! I only just got my first bag of chia a week ago. :-) Now I can put them to good use. :-) I've had some health issues with my heart (not heart disease, a congenital defect) so I've been pretty much off in my own world but I've still been watching what I eat. I've just not been trying to lose anything because of the different meds I've been on. I had no idea how they would affect me. Now I've got things pretty well worked out and I'm on the mend.

So I'm also working back to getting back to jogging too. I'm taking it easy though, my heart is very cranky about new activity. However the cardiologist says it can't hurt so I'm giving it my best but my jogs are maybe two times a week and it's really more of a walk/jog at this point until I get back in shape. I'm working the couch to 5k program. It's slow but I'll get there! I'm back to wanting to lose a couple sizes but honestly, I'm feeling more self accepting of my curves these days. Life is too short to be worried about being a size 10 when it may never happen for me. I'm tired of obsessing over unrealistic goals. It's the process I need to enjoy...you know smell the roses and all that. ;-)

All anybody can ask is that you be the best person you can be everyday.Sometimes we have good days sometimes we have bad days ;) Good health is more important than being a size 1.If you get your health under control the weight will just come off :)

Umpa is right, Michelle! :)
Good health is more important than being a size 1!

By staying focused on our health and NOT our weight, our success is assured.
Losing weight is a secondary benefit to better health by removing carbs from our lives.
But, weight loss (http://www.fattoskinny.com/) will follow if we remain focused on improving our health and enjoying the journey.

As your health improves, your heart will be less "cranky" about new things.
In fact, you will find new physical activities fun and much more enjoyable.

I know this for a fact as my body WAS "cranky" about doing most anything physical for a LONG time.
But not anymore! ;D

It's true Tony. Yesterday I was able to jog and I felt like some of my old energy was coming back. I'm being more patient and gentle to myself this time around. No heart repercussions yesterday either which is awesome! I also figure two weeks ago l had just barely been on my new meds for a few days. Now it's been nearly a month so perhaps it's really finally helping. I'm walking more too. I got an app on my phone that works as a pedometer and tracks my activity all day and my sleep at night to see how I'm sleeping (I have trouble sleeping a lot). It's very useful information for me and gives me goals to short for and I've incorporated some other goals for it to track too like water intake and exercise (sit-ups, push-ups, etc.) I'm feeling good but I'm still pretty hyper overall lol. That's just how I am though I think! :-)

I'm happy for you, Michelle! :) :) :)

Being patient with yourself will payoff, big time.
Just stay the course, stay active (without pushing too hard), and you'll do great!
And your body will thank you for it, too! ;D
