General Questions / Sugar-free cough syrup?
« on: March 05, 2012, 04:35:37 PM »
I am recovering from bronchitis and wonder if anyone has searched for and/or found a sugar-free cough syrup.  My doctor introduced me to FTS so he searched for some samples and gave me the one with the lowest amount of sugar but he was unaware of a sugar-free brand.  I was in codeine cough syrup territory but info on over the counter brands would also be helpful.  I would certainly never risk my health because of a possible sugar craving but, if it can be avoided, I'd rather.

It seems that the size of the diabetic population would make SF medications popular.

If you look a the plate on their website, the plate is divided into a half and two quarters for veggies, protein and carbs (their words, not mine).

I am totally in favor of the 9" plate concept and use it myself.  It is the graphics on these plates that could be confusing to the uninitiated.  My opinion, of course, so entirely subject to review by the rest of the clan.

The idea of the smaller plate is great but I don't think the division lines on the plate are consistent with FTS.  I saw Dr. Mark Hyman on a talk show last week and his book, The Blood Sugar Solution, says half your plate with low carb veggies, a quarter with protein and a quarter with carbs.  I don't see an easy way to reconcile that with what I've found successful following FTS.

We have a 1904 set of stoneware from "Aunt Tina's" estate.  The dinner plates are 9".  I've switched from our everyday dishes to using these.  They are elegant and a nice touch of the past in our busy modern world.

I love cucumber slices as a cracker substitute for this kind of appetizer.  This looks great and thanks for not stopping at the Chicken Liver variation.

They're a great treat and much better than resorting to the real thing.  They didn't spike my blood sugar but they definitely slowed my weight loss.  I'm glad you found an outlet.

Forewarned is forearmed.

Buford,
Your timing was great for me.  My mouth was empty and I really needed a good laugh.

Your headaches sound like caffeine withdrawal, Umpa.  That's pretty common when you go cold turkey.  I drink one cup of coffee a day and I have a headache by 10am if I skip it.  Not pounding but definitely there.

Welcome, Violet.  I, too, have thyroid issues and was watching the scale go up and up no matter what I tried.  With FTS, I've been able to lose weight even with my hormones working against me.  This is the best thing you can do for yourself.  With small children in your life, it's hard to put yourself first, but there are lots of folks here to give you support if you ask and a healthy mom is so important to the whole family.

I'd say good luck but I don't think luck has much to do with it.  Make a decision and hop on board the FTS train.  It will get you where you want to be.

I haven't posted a link before so I hope this is right.  It's a recipe for low carb "Bailey's."  It's in the beverage section.

It's good to hear from you, bigjoey.  I actually thought of you today as I drove west on I-76 on my way back to Denver from Nebraska.  Congratulations on your continued loss.  Watch out 300, here he comes!

I decided to avoid them until I get to goal.  It has sped up my weight loss and I really don't miss them.  I'm thinking they'll be low on the list of what I start adding once I get to goal and I'll be selective.  My problem is that one piece would be enough but a whole bag in the pantry will get eaten.  Old habits bleeding through, I guess.

Erythritol is a sugar alcohol so  Carbs - 3, Erythritol - 3 means zero net carbs.  Erythritol is more powdery than xylitol and not as sweet but some people tolerate it better than xylitol because it is a smaller molecule.

Sugar alcohols can be a mixed blessing.  Depending upon how you tolerate them, they can cause some intestinal distress and can be a factor in stalling your weight loss.  Everyone is different, but, in my opinion, you need to get the basics of low carb eating down and slowly add items with sugar alcohols.  That will allow your body to adjust and also give you a way to tell if the sugar alcohols slow or stall your weight loss.

Good luck.  You have a cheering section.

Umpa,
Your feet don't get fatter?  Mine do.  I'm down half a shoe size, went from wide to B width and my toes are much skinnier.  I'm wearing socks to keep my feet from slopping around in my shoes.  I'll get new ones in about 10 pounds.

Does anyone else measure time in pounds lost or to be lost?
