General Discussion / Re: Just received my FTS book today!!
« on: June 27, 2012, 03:55:26 AM »
Hi and welcome.  I'm sure you're gonna do well.

You don't have to give up your cake or your ice-cream.  You can eat 'almost' just as you have been but with modifications and substitutions.  If you check out the recipe forum it is absolutely chock-a-block full of ideas, suggestions and recipes.  There is also a host of people on the forum who are ready, willing and able to help you with any problems or questions you may have.

I had the baking bug yesterday and the need for cake - so I baked a lovely sponge with cream and chocolate 'frosting'.
Unfortunately there is only me to eat it so I had to take some to a friend's place for morning tea.  She usually turns up her nose at anything sugarfree because she is a sugarholic.  Apart from saying the 'frosting was a bit too coco-y (I made it with dark chocolate - she likes milk chocolate. Picky Picky Picky) she loved it.

Yes indeedy.  On the occasions I've used it, it did well.  Even the fruit cake, which I was skeptical about - because the cake was a bit on the dry side anyway - worked.

There isn't much that I miss but from time to time I would love to have a cookie that has a crunch like an Oreo.  With the flours we use to keep them low enough in carbs to be worth having it is hard to get them to stay crispy  :-\

This is probably the only legitmate use of sugar a person on fts would have - if you put 2-4 sugar cubes in the container with your cookies they should not go soggy. The cubes actually absorb any moisture.  Old household tip.
If you want to keep cake (mainly fruitcake - which isn't really fts) moist you keep a slice of white bread (also not fts) in the container.

Ask Umpa / black soya beans
« on: June 21, 2012, 05:06:29 AM »
I'm not sure if this is the right section to ask - but (never having used these before) for future reference - do you rinse the beans (canned) before adding to recipe?  I made chilli and used these.  I rinsed them like I usually do any canned bean, but then wondered if perhaps you through the whole lot in.

General Discussion / Re: Are cherries allowed?

Welcome fineman.  I sympathise - I love cherries too.  We are in winter here at the moment (Australia) so all the fruits I love are out of season so no temptation.  Just as well I can get frozen raspberries and strawberries.   :D

Booze! / cooking with alcohol
« on: June 20, 2012, 02:14:45 AM »
I'm sure I read the answer somewhere but can't find it now.  When cooking with alcohol (mainly wine) what happens with the carbs?  Do we just include the carb count in the overall recipe or is there an adjustment when cooking?
thanks

Schools just seem to be butting into everything these days.  And children supposedly have all the rights and parents none.  There was a big controversy last year at one of the high schools near me when it became known that the school was making doctor's appointments for girls (mind you underage girls) to be put on the pill without their parents knowledge or consent.  It went above and beyond their parameters of 'care'.  To my knowledge they didn't even teach sex education.  And doctor's writing these prescriptions without guardian knowledge but with a teacher present is just outrageous.  What is it with Doctors?  You would think that new doctor would at least ease in and say perhaps - I need you to drop in weekly to monitor your blood works.  Not go cold turkey for 4 months.  Worse case scenario (and I wouldn't want that to happen) medical negligence!

General Discussion / The Jeans Test
« on: June 19, 2012, 04:56:03 AM »
As I have decided not to jump on my scale so often and lots of you say to judge by your clothing, I have devised a Jeans Test - as this is what I want to get back into.

I was op-shopping (I so love recycled things) and bought a trendy pair of Jeans - good brand/just worn in- even better half price for the day.  And  that's why I love op-shopping (hmmm not sure if you call it that - thrift shopping? - where people donate used items to charities).

Anyway - I see myself slipping into a size 14 pair of jeans - my happy place - my goal.  Anyway, I am able to slide them up to just above my knees.  Every so often I am going to try them on and chart my progress by how far up I can get them.  I am sure one day they will go all the way.   Then I will do that HAPPY DANCE and do a girly scream. ;D ;D ;D

A girl's gotta have goals. :D

General Discussion / Re: Salt Intake

Morgan, what was the result of your daughters salt increase?

Would you believe since I told her about it she hasn't had one.  Unbelievable ::)
