Don't boil them.  They'll pop.  How about, cut in half, soak in xylitol solution and dry.

How about a pastry bag.  Squeeze little worms of dough onto the parchment paper.  It might be good hand exercise.

General Discussion / Re: Self esteem
« on: February 13, 2012, 10:04:47 AM »
There are times I need to make myself count my blessings instead of my challenges.  "Self-esteem" comes from trying and succeeding but also from trying, failing and trying again.  You've found this lifestyle.  Look ahead, not back and give youself credit for making the changes you need to make for a better today and future.

When I get cranky, he suggests I quilt.  That seems to calm me down.

Smart man.

My skinny husband has been concerned that I'm not eating enough but he's getting used to my much smaller portions.  His parents were young adults during the Depression and lots of food on the table was a symbol of their success.  I was the oldest of 8 children and we ate as fast as we could to make sure we got enough, competing for food.  These are all hard legacies to leave behind.

Thanks for the reminder, Doug.

Welcome to the forum, Jonathan and Amber.  You've come to the right place.

In my experience, drinking enough plain water is very important.  The minimum is 64 ounces a day but more is definitely better, especially with the amount of weight you plan to lose.  The clearest explanation I have heard is that your liver uses the water for two purposes:  to eliminate toxins and to flush fat.  If it needs to spend too much time flushing toxins, it can't flush as much fat.

I use carbonated water and an occasional diet soda as a treat but once I've finished about a gallon of water a day, I don't want to drink much else.

Good luck to both of you.

There are lots of ways for your body to respond to your new low carb lifestyle.  The scale dropping is one of them.  Shrinking out of your pants is another.

Isn't it fun!

Weight Loss Stalled! WHY? / Re: Milk in Tea, cream in coffee
« on: February 09, 2012, 11:28:25 AM »
Conrad,
Since our focus is limiting carb intake, milk in tea is not a good idea.

I'm assuming you are taking about caffeine in coffee, not nicotine.  Adding to the cup will not reduce the amount of caffeine though it will dilute the concentration a tiny bit.  If you drink the whole cup, you consume the same amount of caffeine.

I hope you get a chance to re-read Doug's book.  It seems you missed a concept or two the first time through.

Rena's near-fire experience just confirms the "sawdust" nature of these things.

SarahC, I use them because I can stop at only one!

There aren't very many vegetables in that list and, assuming you are drinking 16 ounce bottles of water, your 2 - 3 bottles aren't getting you to the recommended minimum of 64 ounces.  If you try snacking on a Brancrisp and a piece of cheese instead of the summer sausage, you'll fell full and add some fiber.

It's looks like you've made a really good start.  I think it is fun to see how you can vary and refine your meal plans.  Good luck!

But the crunchier they are, the more saliva they suck out of your mouth when you try to swallow them.  My husband runs them through water (very quickly) and then loads them up.  It takes away some of the sawdust texture.  At our house, we lovingly refer to Brancrisp as shingles.
