General Discussion / Re: Europe converter vs US measurements
« on: October 07, 2010, 08:44:20 AM »
Here in Canada our kitchen gadgets have both metric and standard measurements. These are the markings on mine:
1 cup = 236 ml
1/2 cup = 118 ml
1/3 cup = 79 ml
1/4 cup = 59 ml

1 Tbsp (tablespoon) = 15 ml
1 tsp (teaspoon) = 5 ml
1/2 tsp = 2.5 ml
1/4 tsp = 1.25 ml

In a recipe the shortforms are sometimes used:  1T = one tablespoon,   1t = one teaspoon

For metric recipes we usually round up one cup to 250 ml and half cup to 125 ml.

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome, Niki. Great attitude. I hope your ankle soon heals.
I'm with you on the sugar - that image of eating a cup of sugar with a spoon comes into my mind and I feel ill. Keep us posted on your progress!

Breads and Crackers / Re: One Minute Muffin - OMG, Ya' Gotta Try!!
« on: September 27, 2010, 12:51:14 PM »
Well, the liquid egg white experiment wasn`t a huge success. The bread turned out flatter than usual, too flat to slice horizontally. The egg yolk must help it to rise. And I`ve been using huge eggs. I don`t know what my neighbour feeds his hens but they sure do produce big eggs.
Spaghetti tonight for my family, so I will use the muffin for myself instead of pasta, like a sloppy-joe.

I have a small square(ish) tupperware-type dish (5 inch by 5 inch) that I use to make the "muffin", making it about the size of a slice of bread and 3/4 inch thick. When it is cool I slice it horizontally to make two slices of bread for a sandwich. Perfect!
Sometimes I add a couple drops of almond extract or a small pinch of onion powder (not onion salt) to add a different flavour and mask the strong egg taste.
Today I bought liquid egg whites so I'm going to try them, cuz I think the result will be a less eggy flavour.
And - I don't like to use artificial sweetener and the OMM was the only thing I was using it for. I had debated trying the recipe without but didn't want to spoil a muffin. However, this morning I just realized that yesterday I completely forgot to put the sweetener in, and never noticed. It tasted fine and was the same bread-type result. So now I will just eliminate the sweetener totally.
Also, when I get it all mixed in the little dish I let it set for about a minute before I put it in the microwave. This lets the flax absorb some of the moisture and swell a bit.

Saturday again. More good news, down 1 pound for a total of 30.2 pounds lost. I was just thinking - this is the third time in the past 6 years that I have lost those same 30 pounds. I sure hope it's the last I see of them!

Welcome, Maddysmom. Stick with FTS and you just might find yourself leaving Gainesville to move to Lossville. :)  You're on the right path.

Ask Umpa / Chick peas
« on: September 19, 2010, 07:50:40 PM »
I have a wonderful recipe for a salad of cauliflower, broccoli, feta cheese and chick peas (I think they are called garbanzo beans in the USA). Do you know of a substitute for the peas/beans? Thanks.

Another Saturday.  Thanks, Doug, for your straight talk and pep talk in the previous post. It meant a lot to me to have such personal coaching and to feel that you really, truly do care. That’s wonderful encouragement.

Weigh-in today and the result is: down 3.2 pounds for a total of 29.2.  Wow.

What motivates me? Many health reasons, of course, but this last effort (and I mean LAST, for a lifetime) that prompted me to follow-up with FTS is the very real possibility of both my kids getting married next summer. No definite plans that I’ve heard, and maybe mom is the last to know, but I see it as a strong possibility. I don’t want to be the blimp in the wedding photos when their great-grandchildren are looking through albums in years to come.
Other motivations: To be able to buy clothes (nice clothes!) in a regular store, not have to order online.
