General Discussion / Success and....Less-so
« on: February 19, 2012, 03:36:09 PM »
Great news. We're at the end of week one (technically, our "official" weigh in is tomorrow) - and we've done really well keeping net carbs at 20g or lower.

Amber is down 3 pounds already.

I on the other hand - am UP 2.

I'm pretty sure it's a portion size thing. And I'm going to be more diligent about it. I'm exercising as well - and looking forward to my trip to Walt Disney World next weekend for my 2nd half marathon of the year.

But here's my question: how do you guys figure out your portion sizes so you're not really hungry, but are still losing? I'm sure some of my hunger pangs are carb detox - but I'm really struggling and I don't want to give up. I'm ready for a change.

Suggestions?

One more note - that has NOTHING to do with this post.

If you're interested in reading more about my weight loss journey through FTS and my running in Disney Races (and raising money for Make-a-Wish along the way) - feel free to follow my personal blog: http://voiceofmousetunes.blogspot.com

I typically update once or twice a week (sometimes more) as time permits. :)

So - we're on day three. And already have had a few fun adventures - including nearly a smoke alarm! LOL

The one thing I'm wondering is if anyone has suggestions for portion cutting. I know I'm eating too much. I feel OVERfull tonight. Here's what I ate today:

Breakfast: 2 sticks string cheese; 1 Atkins Shake; 2 Atkins bars (I'm an attorney, and "on the go" meals are a must)
Lunch: 1 slice prime rib; string beans (1/2 c); broccoli (1/2 c); lettuce (1c); hard boiled egg (1/2c); bleu cheese dressing (2-3 Tblspn)

So far so good - was feeling good about things.

But along came dinner.

And I decided to try to pre-prep some things while I cooked. And I didn't have any sugar free gum around.

So while I seared our pork chops (made three, to serve two - fridged one of them for tomorrow) and made our first batch of caulimash (good stuff) - I prepped another small green salad (lettuce, cucumber, 1/2 avocado, oil and vinegar). Again - not bad, right?

But I was also pre-making deviled eggs. And ate about 2 of them (4 halves) while making them.

I also tried to make the cheese crisps from the book - and ate some chunks while I cut them up. But after 8 minutes in our oven, we had smokey, burnt, cheesy, oily, soupy, melted cheese mess. And a LOT of smoke. My wife said "something smells like it's burning" - and sure enough - she was right.

But after it cooled, we had some nice melty cheese. Which I helped myself to.

And now I feel bloated and a little sick to my tummy.

So. Other than not eating while I cook (going to get some gum) - how do you guys find your proper portion sizes? What works for you? Remember that at 357 pounds, I need a little more than most to just keep going - and I exercise, and am doing a half marathon next weekend - so I can't be "hunger" tired. But I don't want to sabotage myself right out of the gate either.

So....

Suggestions? Thoughts?

Hello FTSers!

So - it's my first post, and our first day of FTS life. (Our = Jonathan (me) and Amber (my wife who is doing this with me)

I've been overweight most of my life - and have had successes, only to have problems. I'm now tipping the scales at 357 pounds. And yet - I'm walking a half marathon in Walt Disney World in two weeks. But I'm tired of having problems with them. I'm tired of my blood pressure medication. And I'm tired of hearing about all the risk factors I have in my family (including my father who died 2 years ago next week at the too young age of 64 from weight related congestive heart failure). I have a wonderful wife and a beautiful daughter (28 months old) - and I'm not going anywhere anytime soon (that's the plan, anyhow).

So I figured I'd jump on and say hi. Get to know the community. Hope this is the appropriate board for that - hehehe.

I found Doug's book while wandering through B&N and it jumped off the shelf at me. I've been working out daily and limiting calories, and having some success - but not enough for my liking. So I though - what the heck - let's do this thing! So we cleaned out the fridge and went shopping!

Now - my question. I used to be a diet soda junkie - but not so much anymore. I do have a SodaStream and their syrups are all sucralose rather than aspartame. But MOSTLY I tend to drink carbonated flavored waters - 0 cal - 0 carb - 0 color - but they do have aspartame in them. Do I limit these as well? Or are these okay?

I look forward to reporting our first loss to you guys!

Until then - see ya from the Pacific Northwest!

Jonathan
