Hi, Jeff.

Please read the nutrition labels on your Adkins shakes for net carb count. As I said before, reading nutrition labels is critical to success. I do not have the time to do this for you everyday and for everything you eat. Besides, you MUST learn to do this for yourself if you expect to lose weight and keep it off for life.

From what I found, the Adkins Milk Chocolate flavor shake has 7 total carbs - 5 carbs fiber = 2 Net carbs per shake. Can't speak for other flavors. Nor can I tell how many carbs are in your homemade cookies. For homemade items, check the carb counts for each ingredient, then divide by the number of ACTUALLY EATEN servings per recipe. I've provided food nutrition lookup websites for you in my last response.

Another thing, don't restrict yourself to eating the same thing everyday. You also need nutrition from foods like veggies to maintain good health. So create variety in your daily menu selections. It's very easy to do with all the recipes we have here plus those you can easily find online. Based on the sample menu you provided, you are getting 6 net carbs from the shakes and an unknown number in your cookie recipe. You can't have an ACCURATE  carb count with ANY unknowns. Please look up ALL ingredients.

Regarding technical issues with the forum, please message Doug Verrier from the forum's home page.

Hi, Jeff.

Ketone test strips quality, reliability, etc. vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. That is why I've preferred the brand my doc uses, Ketostix. They are a bit more expensive than some others. But I found they are one of the best.

A moderate reading of ketones is good. It means your body is using ketones for energy rather than blood glucose (high levels would be present shortly after eating anything with sugar or high net carbs). The higher the number, the more ketones are being used. But more does NOT always mean better. You are better off not pushing your metabolism far into ketosis. Doing so for long periods can be harmful, especially if you have certain medical conditions. Ask your doctor, to be sure.

Another thing to keep in mind is that during weight loss, our body is constantly "rebalancing" its metabolism and other systems. Our bodies respond to change by trying to stay in a stasis (unchanging) state. Your body may be trying to move back to a long-held weight set point of 186-188. In order to break this plateau, you need to change something like eat fewer carbs and more fats and reducing portion sizes.

One more VERY important point, our bodies do not care about how many carb grams we think we ate. They will respond to the actual carb intake. That is why reading nutrition labels and keeping track of every net carb is important. For foods that are not prepackaged, there are websites with carb contents, by amount. Here are three of them;

https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/

https://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/search

https://nutritiondata.self.com/

Can't help with the jog problem. This forum's website has changed a couple times. Perhaps message Doug Verrier, the site owner for some instruction.

Bottom line, keep strict track of EVERY NET CARB you eat. With that knowledge, you'll know for sure that you are at 20 or less and how the food you eat is effecting your weight loss journey.

Hi, Jeff!

First, follow the directions on the package of ketone test strips you purchased. There are subtle differences between brands.
Your ketone levels will vary day to day, even hour to hour. Sometimes, it may even be a bit low, like within a couple hours of eating. Therefore, measure your ketones the same time each day, like first thing each morning while you take care of morning business. This is also a good time to check weight.

In infamous weight gain "creep" is common. In my experience, well over 90% of the time, it's due to unintended intake of hidden carbs.
For example, take condiments like ketchup. On average, one tablespoon ketchup has about 4 net carb grams. That is equal to one teaspoon of sugar for each tablespoon of ketchup (or about 1/3).

CAREFULLY reading nutrition labels is CRITICAL to success!

Keep your net carb intake STRICTLY to 20 grams or less per day. That is Total Carbs - Fiber - Sugar Alcohols = Net Carbs.

I HIGHLY recommend keeping a journal of everything you eat and how much along with its net carb amount. This will help you learn about how your body responds to changes you make in your diet. With that, you can better control what you eat for best results.

Also pay attention to portion control. Our bodies have a mechanism to convert proteins into carbs. Overeating low or zero carb foods can cause weight gain when too much is eaten.

Not sure what's going with the jpg.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Jeff!

Temporary hair loss is normal for some and may be due to a dietary deficiency.

Regarding ketosis, check the ketone levels in your urine. You can test for this using ketone test strips.
I used Ketostix the first 6-months or so I was eating low carb. They will tell you when you're in or out of ketosis.
I found this very helpful when making adjustments to what I was eating.

Here's a link that discusses ketone test strips:

And here's a link that discusses hair loss associated with keto lifestyle:

Hi, Jeff!

That weight gain could've been due to many things... Have you read Doug's book "Fat to Skinny, Fast and Easy"? That book provides the basis for how I lost 100 lbs. and saved my life. It will give you a solid foundation from which to start. After that, it's a matter of making minor adjustments for continued success along your journey to goal.

Doug added a URL link to certain phrases like "weight loss" to this forum. To fix them simply edit your post to remove those references and save it again.

Hi, vankjeff!

I have seen and experienced plateaus that lasted 3-4 weeks.
Barring any unknown issue with your health, this is normal for some.

Give it 2 more weeks. If by then things don't get moving again, try eating a bit less and adding more fat.
That has helped me break plateaus a number of times.

Hello, vankjeff!

Sounds like you got the basis for low-carb (keto) correct.

The 1980s was quite a long time ago, and you have aged since. Our bodies (including our bio-chemistries) change with age. I believe that is the difference between now and back then for you. To my knowledge, no one has lost hair by removing carbs from their diets. I have heard a couple reports of thicker hair. But those were purely anecdotal. I assume you don't want to lose hair again. So don't worry about this.

Exercise is also good for the metabolism and overall health. But it is VERY ineffective at speeding up weight loss. Reducing carbs and amounts of food eaten will provide MUCH faster results than workouts.

Regarding a daily 20 net carb limit... When I started this lifestyle back in August 2010, I kept my carb limit to 20-25 carbs per day. Sometimes a bit less when I reached a plateau. I kept doing this for a long time and my health improved a lot during that time. In fact, according to my doc, it saved my life. In my case, the 20-carb limit can be sustained for well over 3 consecutive years with only good results. But let your body and your doctor tell you when adjustments are needed.

Take care and good luck with your renewed weight loss journey!

Thank you tony for answering for me. I've been away for a little while. I've been overseas, been ill, moved house, become a grandmother again, babysat, looked after recovering daughter.  Time has flown.  I was lurking now and then....oh....also had internet issues as nbn was rolling out through our area.

Hopefully things will settle now.  Though going through everything you realise how much stuff you carry round that you don't need (insert weight instead baggage).

You're very welcome, Morgan!

Sounds like life has thrown everything but the kitchen sink at you.
Hopefully, it will settle down for you now.

Hi, wasaw247!  :)

Thanks for the list.

But the number of veggies presented in this article is only a fraction of those we eat in the FTS low-carb lifestyle.

Doug's book, "FAT to Skinny Fast and Easy" has a MUCH larger list. And even it does not list all the veggies we can eat. The key is the net carb count, portion size, and volume of food we eat throughout the day.

Tony

Yes you are right. This list do not contain all the items that need you to get fat to skinny. is there any other list that contains all the items that are necessary to get fat to skinny? I want it urgently.

Hi, Jeffrey!

The way to long term success with weight loss is to make sure you eat no more than 20 net (digestible) carbs per day and watch portion sizes. Other than eating items that go over those amounts, you may eat whatever you want.

I urge you to read Doug's book for his story and explanation of how this eating lifestyle works.
It worked for me. It literally saved my life.

Regards,
Tony

I made Caulifower hash browns the other day and they were so yum  - I then renenbered  how truly versatile this vegetable is.

Considering this was my most hated vegetable when I was growing up.  I think my mother only served it boiled so that could explain a lot.  When I was older I tried cauli in cheese sauce - always a favourite - I think this changed my mind.

When I started F2S I did cauli mash instead of potatoes and I enjoyed that:  I think I prefer it now to potato.  Then came cauli rice, which is really heaps better than stodgy white rice.  Cauli is also great in casseroles as a replacement for potato, but my hash browns(or substitute potato pancakes or fritters)  - yummo.  I hadn't made them in ages and forgot how great they were.

Now that it's almost summer here in Australia and the weather really is warming up - I've realised how easy it is to make coleslaw compared to the ones you buy already made.  I cannot believe the carb count!!!!   Do they add a spoonful of sugar prior to packaging?? either that or they use a really carb load mayo/dressing.

I totally agree with you, cauliflower is a versatile veggie. I also love cauliflower & veggie rice. I don't know how you make it but I make it with a lot a spices and it tastes delicious. Here is my recipe:

Ingredients:
1 cup white rice
2 1/2 cups water
1 onion
1 tomato
1 potato (optional)
1-2 cloves of garlic (optional)
some cauliflower (as per your choice)
Salt & pepper (for seasoning)
Oil (for frying)

Method:
Soak rice in water and leave it aside. Now chop onion, tomato and garlic separately. Dice the potato. Now, take a pot and heat 1-2 spoonful of oil in it. Then saute garlic, then saute onion and when the onion turns brown then put in the chopped tomato into it. Let all these things saute. After that put in the rice soaked in water (along with all the water) into the pot. Then add the potato and cauliflower also into the pot. Then add salt and pepper also into the pot. At this time, it will look like a soup but it is not ready yet. Put a lid on the pot and let it cook on low flame till the rice is completely cooked. When all the water is dried and rice is cooked check if the potatoes have turned soft or not. Take out one piece of a potato and cut it with a knife to check the softness of it. If they are soft, it means that the dish is ready, if it's still hard then add a little bit (very little) of more water and cook on low flame again till the water is all dried up. Then this Cauliflower & veggie rice dish is ready to be served.

I hope you like it  :D

Hi, monana! :-)

You're recipe has two ingredients that are VERY high in net (digestible) carbs; white rice & potatoes. We try to keep our intake of digestible carbs to about 20 grams per day. Either of these ingredients would be far more than that, even for a small portion.

Here's a simple cauliflower rice recipe that is delicious and it's far lower in carbs:

https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchen/healthy-cauliflower-rice-3363582

There are many variations of this recipe on the web.
Look around and be adventurous. :-)

Re: Eat Fats, Cut Carbs to Reclaim Your Skinny Self:
I'm eating healthy fats. Seen research online that butter is healthy too, as well as extra virgin coconut & extra virgin olive oils.
I'm drinking bulletproof coffee in morning with pure Stevia to sweeten.

I am also eating fats including butter and olive oil but it cannot suit my body. It shows some side effects like an upset stomach.

Hi, EdwardDailey!

If you find you cannot tolerate fats well, you may want to talk to your doctor. For example, conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can cause issues with processing fats. Medication can often help.

I hope you find a treatment that will help you.

Tony Thank you so much for your response to my questions.  I thought for a bit that I may be on my own with no forum support but then you came to my rescue  :-*  I tried E mailing Doug and his two responses came back with no script.  I'm no computer wiz and so I'm not sure why there was no script, perhaps it has something to do with spam, but again I'm rather computer illiterate .  Anyway I'm really happy to have heard from you so thank you again.

Of, course!... You're more than welcome! :)

Don't know about your email problem. You could try sending him a message thru the forum.

Just look near the top of the page for "My Messages",
hover your mouse over it and select "Send a Message",
type in "Doug Varrieur", then compose and send your message.

Sometimes Doug gets quite busy, so be patient for a response. It may take some time.

Take Care! :)

Hi, BellaNoela!  :)

As I'm here answering another question you posted, I'll answer here for Morgan.

The forum has become very quiet. However, Doug keeps it active so that folks like you can refer to the our many FTS (Fat to Skinny) recipes and other support. I try to check in at least every few days to help folks like you.

Cream (especially heavy whipping) is very low carb. I've even found it with zero net carbs. Cream cheese is also very low carb and permissible. However, ALWAYS check nutrition labels on foods for carb counts. They are NOT all the same across all brands and will even sometimes change for a given brand.

If you have any other questions, please let us know! :) :) :)

Hello, BellaNoela!  :)

I use cream cheese everyday on a GG bran cracker that I eat each morning with my vitamin and other supplements. I also use heavy cream in many things. Both items are FTS (FAT to Skinny) friendly. Both are very low (or no) carb.

Remember, it's the carb count that matters most. You have 20 net carb gram limit per day to "spend" on whatever food you like. I suggest adding greens to your menu each day for added fiber and other nutrients. Be sure to check carb counts on those, too.

Be sure to ALWAYS check labels for carb counts BEFORE buying any food.
