General Discussion / HUGE Realizations, Thank You's & Good-bye
« on: August 24, 2010, 12:24:27 PM »
I just wanted to say a BIG thank you to Doug for writing a truly AMAZING book and laying it all out there for the public.

A second thank you to Doug and Umpa for answering every single question, assuring me and reassuring me, supporting me, being honest with me, and overall helping me.

And a thank you to everyone on this forum who has supported me and tried to help me along the way.

I have come to some HUGE realizations and I want to share them with you as I say goodbye – at least for now.

So, here goes… Not only am I deeply and truly addicted to sugar (carbs) but I have an eating disorder, a binge eating disorder to be exact.  So, now matter what I do, this plan, that plan or even the FTS lifestyle – nothing is going to work for me until I fix this fundamental problem.

I binge eat out of hunger or from restricting and for me, counting carbs is restricting and I am spending too much time counting carbs, tracking my calories (even though Doug does NOT suggest or support this, it is my own disordered mind that propels me to do this) and weighing myself (morning and evening repeatedly). When I don’t see results on the scale I get extremely frustrated which leads me to want to eat or give up. I am also spending too much time on this forum instead of getting on with things I need to do. I think that by spending all this time focusing on my weight it is a mechanism to avoid my life and the things I really should be doing.

I have been reading the book The Truth About Beauty by Kat James in conjunction with Fat to Skinny.  This author suffered a terrible eating disorder and healed herself by eliminating sugar just like Doug suggests.  Obviously there is more to just cutting out sugar for me so for now I am going to focus on healing myself. I am now implementing some natural supplements to help with anxiety, and cravings which I am hoping will help.

Additionally I would like to put it out there that with a little research I realized that Sucralose causes a reaction in me that aggravates my insulin makes me hungry and brings back my cravings so I am never going to put that in my body again and am sticking with Stevia, Xylitol and Malitol.  Just wanted to share in case anyone else has noticed Sucralose doesn’t work for them.

I am also throwing out my scale today. Yep, you heard me… in the garbage it is going once and for all. I am going to go by how my clothes fit and how I feel.

I am also going to stick with the principles of FTS but without counting my carbs as for me personally it keeps me in my disordered frame of mind which is counterproductive. I am going to focus on my HEALTH, my children and my husband and living my life instead of obsessing about weight.

I wanted to share this with you because A) your support has been incredible.  I can’t even get this kind of support from my own friends so you don’t know how much it means to me and B) I don’t want any of my previous posts to discourage anyone because now I see that this lifestyle can’t work for me until I fix my eating disorder and C) maybe someone out there is going through what I am going through and I would like to help

So I am saying goodbye for now.  Once I can correct my imbalances and eradicate my diet mentality then I am sure I can come back to FTS as a real lifestyle.

Thank you again to all of you and best of luck with your FTS journey!

Sincerely, Nic

General Discussion / oops went over my 20g carbs.... what to do?
« on: August 21, 2010, 07:17:54 PM »
I didn't realize that my berries in my protein shake were so high in carbs and I've gone over my total for the day by 2.4 and I'll probably still need a snack before bed.

Oh dear.  Does this ever happen to any of you?

I have a tendency to want to be perfect and if I don't stick to the plan 100% I get discouraged and give up and I DON'T INTEND on doing this.

Does it make sense to keep my carbs lower tomorrow to balance it out?

Suggestions please.... still learning

thx

General Discussion / What supplements does everyone take if at all?
« on: August 19, 2010, 07:53:56 PM »
In the book, Doug says that he takes a B vitamin but I'm just wondering if anyone else takes supplements and if they have found them useful.

For instance I saw Chromium at the low carb grocery store and was told that they help to balance out blood sugar levels. I figured I didn't need  them if I am eating low carb and eliminating sugar but given that my cravings are out of whack again I'm wondering if it couldn't help.

I agree 1000% but I thought I could handle the sugar free treats the way you guys seem to here but clearly I am not only addicted to real sugar but I am also addicted to the fake sugar as well.

I already know full well that the real sugar is lethal to me but now I have to realize that the substitute stuff is also dangerous for me too.

Now I have to get off of EVERYTHING exept protein, nuts, cheese, veggies and berries and deal with it. It's not the end of the world or anything but I have to break through this urge for something sweet and when all of you talk about your sugar free jello, whipped cream, bars or whatever I have to ignore it and realize that for me... it will only lead to trouble.  I have to eat clean, sugar free and low carb and I should be ok.

Thanks for listening, and supporting me.

Nic

I fell off the wagon and binged for 3 days and of course gained back what I lost on FTS plus more. I feel hopeless, ashamed, stupid and mad at myself.

I don't know what happened. I was doing great and even posted about how easy this was becoming for me and then suddenly I was craving all of these low carb sweets and my appetite became out of control.  I was tracking everything I ate at fatsecret.com which was not only becoming time consuming but obsessive as well.  It just all started to drive me crazy.

Now I am left wondering this...

Is FTS just another plan that doesn't work for me, or can I just not tolerate sweeteners because they bring out my sweet tooth. I'm always ok for a few days having a bit and then I want more and more.

I don't know if I should give up all together or if I should re-try this but WITHOUT treats.

Now that I am up 6lbs I should have been happy where I was at with a 2lb loss.

So upset, sad and depressed. :-(

I suspected that was the answer which is also why I suddenly stopped losing weight.

It was hard enough to give up real sweets but now I have to give up my replacements too.  But ultimately it is for the best so I'll just have to do it!

Hi all,

Sorry yet another post but I need some help.  Since I re-introduced a few things I notice some cravings and I want to erradicate it because it felt amazing not to have cravings.

When I first started I could handle some low carb treats (cookies, muffins, cream) but now I find 1 serving doesn't satiate me and I want more and more and now I'm eating this stuff daily and twice daily and wanting more.

Is it best to erradicate ALL addictions even to low carb treats while starting out?

Thanks

General Discussion / What's the best way to track carbs
« on: August 16, 2010, 10:02:23 PM »
I really need to know how you guys track your carbs for the day.  Do you do it in your head, do you write it down?

I've been tracking in fatsecret.com and I find that tracking every little thing online is making me really obsessive.  It is taking the fun out of this and I find it's not only making me a little crazy with all of this but when I see that I only have 1 carb left I feel very deprived for some reason.

What do you guys advise?

Thanks. I really want to make this work for me and succeed.

General Discussion / 0 carbs - too good to be true?
« on: August 16, 2010, 06:42:03 PM »
If my whipping cream is 0 carbs and my string cheese is 0 carbs on the label, is it really 0 or should I be counting something for them?

It just sounds way too good to be true.

General Discussion / Help... my cravings and hunger are back.
« on: August 16, 2010, 06:40:05 PM »
Hi all,

I have recently added in unsweetened cocoa powder with 2 g carbs and 2 g fibre (to make hot chocolate with cream) and suddenly I am hungry and have cravings again.  Do you think this can be the problem?

I was feeling great a few days ago and that things were getting easier and suddenly I want chocolate all the time now.

:-(

General Discussion / Is it me, or is this getting EASIER!
« on: August 15, 2010, 09:17:01 PM »
I don't want to jinx myself here but it seems to me that after a week FTS is actually getting EASIER!

Does anyone else find this to be the case?

This has never ever ever happened to me with any other diet (even though this is not a diet) and believe me I have tried everything over the past 25 years.

I just came back from a BBQ and I managed quite effortlessly.  Ok, I might have overdone the protein even though I stopped 3 times to assess my hunger and had a few of the salads, one strawberry for dessert and a cup of decaf with a bit of half n half.

But the potatoes, although they looked really good, I somehow didn't register them as food.
Pasta I have no interest in.
The cakes and cookies looked nice almost cute like they were props, but I filled up on protein so they didn't tempt me.

I just hope I can keep this up!

I feel the same way. I was lucky to stumble upon this book at Chapters in Toronto, Ontario amongst the sea of other "diet" books.

I am thankful every day since I started this that I found this book!

Never mind them... I've seen the light. My mood is better (even my husband noticed), I feel a little lighter and very hopeful that I can achieve sanity, health and a leaner body over time!

A can of tuna is cheap, so are eggs.  Ground beef is usually on sale so for a cheap and quick meal I cook it up and stuff it in some green peppers and cook.  A little sour cream on top.. YUM and cheap.

General Discussion / Turned Atkins Shake Into Protein Shake
« on: August 15, 2010, 03:28:00 PM »
So I had a coffee flavoured Atkins shake at home and they are just too sweet for me and make me hungry for some reason so I put it in a blender with 0 carb protein powder, some water/ice and some flax oil and turned it into a healthier and more filling treat.

2 net carbs for the whole thing.

Yum!

BTW, if the Atkins shakes are only 1 and 2 carbs (depending on the flavour) why do they increase my hunger?

Anyone else have this experience?
