General Discussion / Xylitol side affect?
« on: February 10, 2011, 07:37:10 AM »
My husband might be having an adverse side affect to xylitol and I was wondering if anyone else has run across this.  Last weekend I made a small cheese cake with xylitol, but for the two days we had it he noticed he was a little light headed and dizzy.  On the second day after telling me about how light headed he was feeling, I took his pulse which was 110 and B/P was very low.  He took it easy the remainder of the day and has since felt fine and his pulse and pressure returned to normal.  The only thing he can think of that's different is the more concentrated amount of xylitol in the cheesecake.

Any thoughts?

General Discussion / Ratted himself out!
« on: October 26, 2010, 09:11:49 AM »
I started to do dishes this morning and as I was cleaning out the drain catcher, there was this one, lone, elbow macaroni noodle.  Hummmmm, where did this come from?  I went to my dear husband and bent over his shoulder and whispered into his ear, "Did you eat macaroni for lunch yesterday?"
I got the paniced deer in the headlight look................."Uhhhh.......yes...........but I measured out one cup and that's all I had!"
I didn't beat him up over it because he obviously went to measures to clean up and put away everything so there was no evidence.  Sort of a closet eater and I certainly can relate to that.
This is the only "diet" he's actually stuck with more than a week with me and he's lost 12 pounds since the end of August.  He's reading labels when he goes to the grocery and then comes home to tell me how many crazy carbs were in something he thought was okay to buy and didn't.
Now my question is this, if husbands can secretly cook, clean up and put away dishes while the wife is away, why can't they secretly clean toilets, bathtubs, and mop floors while the wife is away?

General Discussion / Too Fat For 15
« on: October 12, 2010, 04:29:38 AM »
Has anyone watched the show Too Fat For 15?  I have watched 4-5 of the shows and I was stunned at the so called "good food" choices the Wellspring Camp allows.  Rice Krispie marshmellow treats are allowed......really?  It's all about portion control and the fat content of what they eat, not about the carbs/sugars.  The majority of these kids did lose a good deal of weight because of the structure and control of their day and food intake, but I never saw, and granted I have not seen each episode, anything about the education of how carbohydrate is metabolized.
It shouldn't be just the kids getting an education about portion control and exercise either because from the looks of all the parents, these kids are doomed to repeat old habits.

General Discussion / Vacation in the Keys
« on: October 12, 2010, 03:51:59 AM »
Hello Doug and Umpa,
We will begin our drive to Key West on Nov. 5th for some fun and sun.  We were in Key West 12 years ago and did the typical tourist things.  Any recommendations on what we must do or see while traveling through the Keys that most people are not aware of?

General Questions / xylitol conversion
« on: September 26, 2010, 04:56:40 AM »
What is the conversion from Splenda to xylitol in a recipe?  I've been experimenting with Splenda and I'm not too crazy about the chemical taste.

General Discussion / Sugar free chocolate chips or bars
« on: September 25, 2010, 07:20:04 AM »
We live in the Indianapolis area and I cannot find sugar free chocolate chips or chocolate bars in our local groceries.  Well.......by I, I mean my husband since he's the grocery shopper.  What brand do you use and where do you find it?

General Questions / Sugar grams in food and understanding it.
« on: September 23, 2010, 05:08:33 AM »
My husband brought home unsweetened carob chips for a sweet treat for an alternative to artificially sweetened treats.  The ingredients are, carob powder, nonfat milk powder, whey powder, fractionated palm kernal oil, soy lecithin.  The nutrition facts are, total fat 3.5g, total carb 8g, fiber 2g, sugars 7g.
Now, how do you understand the sugar grams and what is or is not acceptable?
