Isn't the Good Lord just amazing!!!

He always shows up and does His thing right on time!

Even when we don't hear, see, or feel Him, it's important for us to remember that He is ALWAYS with us.
There are times He prefers to remain silent to let His will be worked out in our lives.

I thank the Lord for you, Doug as well your work FAT To Skinny.
Without FAT To Skinny, I don't think it would have been much longer before I too suffered a heart attack.

Phil,

You're right... It was just a bump in the road to getting healthy.
I guess by surviving these "bumps" makes the rest of the journey to being fit a bit easier to travel.
In other words, what doesn't defeat us only makes us stronger.

I will not fear (or even think about) such a "bump" happening again.
Because I know that if it does, I simply forgive myself, allow myself to get past it, and continue on down the FTS road to health.

Thank you and owensmath again for your helpful feedback!

BTW, I lost 1/2 pound (of the pound I gained) since yesterday.

Thanks owensmath!

As I said, I'm back on the "FTS wagon" today and even more committed and determined than ever to make this work.
I CANNOT allow ANY prospect of failure to enter into this endeavor!
I desperately NEED this to work!... For my health AND my life!!!

I was just wondering if anyone else out there ever had to face a setback like this.
If you've never had one, trust me on this, an early-on major setback like this can give you a lonely disappointed feeling.
But if no one wants to share, that's ok too. I will make do either way.

My wife and I went south to Portland to visit her folks yesterday.
Her brother flew in from Illinois for a visit as well.

Her dad has not been doing well health-wise the last couple of months.
He's in his late 70s with a host of health problems. He has also had 4 double-bypass heart surgeries in the last 20 years.
The last surgery was about a year ago.

Her mom and dad have always loved to hold family BBQs in the summer and do a great job of them too.
But when my brother-in-law flies in, they pull out all the stops!
Everyone is supportive of my FTS efforts.
But with my father-in-law's failing health, I guess it took a lower priority.

Well... I fell off the FTS wagon BIG TIME!!!  :( :( :( :( :(
Tried as I could... with all my might... but the temptations there were FAR to great to ignore.
I even brought along some low carb alternative foods (for example, cauliflower mashed "potatoes") in preparation.
I did not crave any the high carb items there. But I could not ignore them either!
There were only two things served that were not a problem; steaks and cheese slices (without the crackers).

Besides wonderful 2" thick BBQed rib eye steaks, there was local grown fresh corn of the cob, Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve beer, Oreo Double Stuff cookies, and Bananas Foster for dessert.
Unfortunately, I have a weak spot for ALL of those things!
I was in no way prepared for this uber-elevated level of temptation.

I estimate that I ingested about 580g of net carbs yesterday! That's just under a month's worth!!!
I gained exactly 1 lb. since yesterday morning. I thought it was going to weigh a lot more.

Anyway, I'm back on the wagon this morning.
But I still feel bummed out that yesterday, I collapsed like a house of cards in a hurricane!
I thought I could "resist" without any issues.
Guess I need a a lot more time on FTS to acquire the strength needed to resist temptation this great.
I have recommitted to FTS again today completely!

Has this happened to anybody else out there?
I sure would like to feel that I'm not alone.

I'm trying not to feel guilty... But it's tough not to.
Guess I was too overconfident.

I've got some chores to tend to right now.
But I'll check back in here in a while.

I'm with you on that... More power to ya Gary!

When someone is in a physical state where his/her body can withstand the demands of rigorous exercise, it is a good thing.

As a former college football player, I understand the value of strength and endurance training.
It can come in very handy when you're working on projects around the homestead, on vacation doing physical stuff, or going fishing and brush busting to get to a remote spot on a stream. You can work (and play) much harder and much longer before even breaking a sweat.

One of my goals is to get back into similar shape that I was in while I was attending college.
I'm real and don't expect to be able to play ball like I did back then. But God willing... I'll be able to "bust brush" again without strain.

Doug,

Sounds like a GREAT way to help keep me on track with FTS!

I just need to go out to our storage room and find a pole that caught me lots of fish.

Hopefully, my wife won't mind staring at it either. ;)

Thanks!!!!
Tony

I guess the new-old saying should be:

In today's mail came the results of my blood test labs from when I saw my doctor earlier this week on 08/17/2010 (my 12th day on FTS).
Results from my last visit (and blood draw) on 04/14/2010 are compared;

Total Cholesterol (then 153) (now 127) - Less than 200 is normal.

Triglycerides       (then 122) (now 73) - Less than 150 is normal.

HDL                  (then 37)  (now 34) -  40-60 is normal. Doc's note says this will go up soon with continued daily 30 min. walks.

LDL                   (then 92) (now 78) - Less than 130 is normal.

Blood Sugar        (then 121) (now 107) - Less than 110 is normal. Higher than 125 after 2 tests is diabetic.

All numbers (except one, HDL) are showing marked improvement! And I've been on FTS for only two weeks!!!
I'll be seeing him again in 6 months. Hopefully, he'll take me off my meds then.

I'm thrilled!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi Toddy....

I believe I've overcome my addictions.... As long as I stay in the FTS lifestyle and not pick up another cigarette.

By living on FTS, I am overcoming my addiction to bad carbs.
Since I've been in it for two weeks, I'm past detox and feeling great.
My urges for junk carbs have gone away.

The only other addiction I had was to cigarettes.
And that ended back on 05/09/2010.
No more of that for me... No Maam!

Doug,

Your NC stream trout hole looks very much like many of the smaller streams around here except we have more evergreen trees (like cedar and fir) that surround them.

Some of them carry MONSTER trout and big salmon!
But you'll have to hike a number of miles "busting brush" to find those "special" holes.
It's a great way to find solitude with nature on pristine waters with unmolested BIG fish that are willing to bite.

I remember a summer back in 1991 when I was MUCH thinner, I was fishing the upper reaches of a small local river drowning raw shrimp under a bobber, when I hooked and landed a "chrome bright from the sea" 18 lb. steelhead hen on 6 lb. Chameleon mono line and a long, fast, light tapered rod... WOW!!! What Fun!!! And talk about good eating!!!

I'm REALLY looking forward to doing this kind of fishing again... I can almost taste it!
All the more reason for me to succeed with the FTS lifestyle!

Way to go Doug and Sherri!

Doug, you've got a nice striper there.

But Sherri's largemouth looks bigger.
I think she won the contest for largest fish! ;)

I gave up fishing contests with my wife long ago.  I'm not a masochist.

It doesn't matter that throughout her life, she only goes fishing once in a blue moon.
When she does, I can count on her not only to catch the most fish, but the largest too!
If fact, if I really want to fill a cooler with fish, I just have to talk her into coming along.

I really enjoy fishing from my boat.
But my "true fishing love" is walking up and down the pristine banks or our local rivers streams and fishing for steelhead trout and salmon. But unless I want to hurt myself (or worse), I will need to wait until much of this weight is off and I feel up to the challenge of "river rock hopping".

Hi Doug!

I'm sorry if I left the impression that I'm from Canada.
I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest state of Washington.

I sometimes look out my back window at my 14' aluminum boat sitting in it's shed, covered in dust and sad. :'(

I firmly believe that by next spring, my health will be such that I will have that boat out and be catching BIG bass in the lakes around here (not to mention the 20+ lb. rainbow trout and steelhead trout that live in many local lakes and rivers). :) :) :) :) :) :)

Hi Guys!

I was at my doctor's earlier this week and talked to him about FTS.
He said he approves of it because he says eliminating sugars and starches from a diet are critical for successful AND sustained weight loss. And that eating plenty of vegetables along with protein and fat insures good nutrition.
I'm so glad he's supportive of the FTS lifestyle! :)
I've heard not all doctor's are.

I also talked with him about exercise.
I told him that since I started FTS, my wife and I walk about 35-40 minutes (3 miles) a day.

A funny smile came over his face and he told me that many people believe they have to exercise themselves to exhaustion in order to get a decent workout for weight loss. He said, current research shows that this in not necessary!

He agrees with Doug to NOT exercise for the purpose of weight loss.
He said it takes so much exercise just to lose only one pound of body fat, the work-to-reward ratio is too slow and discouraging for most people.

He says, brisk walking for 30 minutes a day is the best exercise I can do to get my metabolism in a good place to foster more rapid and healthy weight loss, start building cardio strength, AND get my metabolism back into a healthy balance.

He wants to see me in 6 months and maybe take me off (or at least reduce) the meds I take for high blood pressure, cholesterol, and high blood sugar [i.e. all together (with obesity) these spell, "metabolic disorder"].
Man o man am I looking forward to that!!! ;D ;D ;D
