Sugar grams in food and understanding it.
« on: September 23, 2010, 05:08:33 AM »
My husband brought home unsweetened carob chips for a sweet treat for an alternative to artificially sweetened treats.  The ingredients are, carob powder, nonfat milk powder, whey powder, fractionated palm kernal oil, soy lecithin.  The nutrition facts are, total fat 3.5g, total carb 8g, fiber 2g, sugars 7g.
Now, how do you understand the sugar grams and what is or is not acceptable?

Are you asking for a total carb count?

Well.......I guess I want to know how many sugar grams per serving I should be aiming for.  Does the total sugar grams affect the way you figure how many carbs are in a product?

Carbs - Fiber- sugar alcohols = carb count .Sugar gram are a good way to check if they are lying about carb counts. You can't have 7 grams of sugar and only 4 carbs in total.Your product is 6 carbs per serving which is high unless the serving size is large.

There are 6 grams of carbs in a serving of those carob chips. That's ALOT.
