Xylitol Question

Ok, so now that I am sold on Xylitol for replacing sugar, I do have one nagging issue with it.  All of the ones that I have tried are in granulated form and it takes so long for it to dissolve.  Is there a powdered Xylitol available that is a little more recipe friendly?   I hate to keep buying different ones and was hoping someone else could help.  ???

Hi Paula!

Here's an idea... If you have a "grindy thingy" (food processor), put your Xylitol in it and turn the granules to powder.
I've personally not tried this but it should work and save you a little money.

Paula, I have found 2 brands of xylitol that are very fine grind.  One brand is Emerald Forest http://shop.emeraldforestxylitol.com/xylitolsweetener/emeraldforestxylitol-edulcorant-1lb-bolsa.htm  (actually I see on their website, they even have xylitol toothpaste).  I'm not sure what the other brand is but but I'll see if I can find out for you, I'm pretty sure my Mom has some in her cupboard.  The NOW brand is a little more crystally.

Thanks!  My husband also suggested using the grindy thing.  I will have to for what I already have, but hope to find some that is easier to use in the future, especially for the upcoming holidays.  I will check out your link shihtzumom!

Paula, the other brand  of xylitol that I found that is a very fine grind is Xylitol Canada, which I have found at the Low Carb Grocery (Canada) online and also a local Gluten Free Bakery sells it (I only stop in to buy xylitol now, I don't buy baked goods).  I found this place before I knew about FTS when I ordered a cake for my sister who can't have gluten.  I ordered the cake gluten free and sugar free and the owner told me about xylitol,which I had never heard of before.   They also had bags of it for sale, so I picked up one to try.  So now I stop in for just xylitol, no baked goods, honest, I'm a good girl.

Now you can make your own baked goods and don't have to feel guilty for eating them....FTS POWER!!!

I have a question about Xylitol -
Since the xylitol in the SF candy can cause gastric issues, does it do the same in baked goods?

Xylitol doesnt cause problems it's sorbitol and malitol that are a problem.

Xylitol is birch bark caligirl. Paula if your recipe calls for liquid you can always heat up your liquid and dissolve the xylitol in that.Thats what I do. ;)

Thanks :) I hope I ordered the right form of Xylitol. I read that some brands are derived from corn (cow food) and beet sugar.

When you order your sweetners like vitamins make sure they are 100% pure. No fillers.The fillers are where the carbs are. ;)

Does xylitol have a "funny" taste to it?  Does it "smell/stink" while baking in the oven in a food item? Just curious!

I shared the almond meal brownies with my coworkers today and they couldn't believe that they were "healthy" because they didn't have the typical aftertaste that accompanies artificial sweeteners. One lady said, "So, I could put that stuff in my tea and it would taste like regular sweet tea?" She was referring to xylitol. Try it, was my response.

I think xylitol is the closest thing to sugar that I have ever used, especially if you can find the finer grind.  It does not leave that funny aftertaste like other sweeteners and I like that it is a natural product instead of a chemical one.  It is a little sweeter than sugar so if you are using it in one of your old recipes I would cut down on the amount a bit.  Happy baking!
