Xylitol scare with Bam Bam
« on: October 31, 2010, 05:37:18 PM »
As you guys know we are busy putting the bakery book together, it's turning out great by the way. Today Umpa baked Walnut bread, Walnut cookies and Pumpkin spice walnuts...it was a walnut kind of day. I had set up the plates for the book photos, took them and then I got myself busy packing for Boston, leaving in the morning.

When I left the room Bam Bam snuck in and woofed down 4 walnut cookies sweetened with Xylitol. The only reason we even noticed is he dropped a cookie on the stairs during his retreat and Umpa stepped on it. It only took a moment to realize what had happened. I looked at the plate in horror to see 4 of the cookies gone. At the time we didn't know who had eaten the cookies and we have 5 Yorkies!

We went into action quickly. Umpa grabbed the bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide from the cabinet and I grabbed a big syringe (needle removed) We gave each dog a good dose of Peroxide shot right down their throats, about 1/2 ounce each to induce vomiting. Within ten minutes we knew who the cookie thief was, Bam Bam.

Next step was to feed him some high carb food (tough to find in our house) to ward off potential hypoglycemia in the dog.

So far so good, everyone seems OK. It's been about two hours since the event and we feel the quick action stopped the Xylitol from entering his system....fingers crossed. I've read that Xylitol is toxic to dogs and this is our first and hopefully last mistake.  :( :(

Thank God you caught Bam Bam in time!

Yorkies being small dogs (like our miniature schnauzer, Winston) are VERY susceptible to even small doses of Xylitol.

Last week, I made a batch of Umpa's Sugar Blossom Cookies and accidentally dropped one on the kitchen floor while moving them from the baking pan to a platter.
Winston is VERY FAST at picking up ANY dropped food.
Fortunately, I made it to the cookie before he did and snatched it from him right in front of his nose!!!... Whew!

From now on when I'm making anything with Xylitol, we will be sure to put Winston in his kennel to be safe.

Bam Bam is fine today, totally back to normal. But that is the treatment-Hydrogen peroxide-carbs(dogfood). All my dogs are 6-9pounds EXCEPT BamBam he is huge by yorkie standards.(about 20 pounds)
