organic low carb
« on: April 20, 2010, 03:19:28 PM »
Hi,

I am new to this forum, having just read Doug's book.  I am very excited about the possibility of actually getting some weight off.  I just emailed a question to Doug and it was suggested I post here on the forum to get input.

My question is..........do any of you prefer to eat organically, and, if so, how do you do that and still have choices in low carb products such as the grainy crackers, tortillas, etc.?  Due to a previous health concern, I really don't want all the additives in many of the low carb foods on the market.  Obviously, the vege's and proteins can easily be done organically, but what about the other products?

Also, I am still a bit unclear regarding dairy.  Is it generally to be avoided or do you just compute the carbs and figure it into the daily total amount allowed?

Thanks for helping this newbie:)

Dixie Diner has an enormous amount of organic products. Also they have vegetarian/vegan selections. Anything they have that works with this program is gluten free.  The main difference between organic and regular food is that organic products have not had pesticides used on them. Their nutrional value is the same as anything else,

Hello sbird welcome to the forum. I've given some thought to your question. the fruits I allow are Strawberries, Raspberries, Blackberries and avocado. The protein I recommend comes from Beef, Pork, Lamb, Poultry, Fish, Seafood and Soy. The greens veggies are a good list including spinach, lettuce, cabbage, green beans etc... everything I listed above can be bought organic, range raised, or wild caught. That only leaves the desserts, sweeteners and pre packaged products. Beebs gave you a good answer for a start.I'm sure more will follow. Keep in touch and update the forum often :)

I actually just watched a medical program about the difference between organic and regular foods at the doctors office.  Anything I dont know and have questions about I ask Doug or I google!

I appreciate all the input on the organic issue.  I have been on a journey into more healthy eating (which resulted in too many fruit carbs and getting fat) but have also  broadened my reading into areas I never thought I would go.  I work in the medical field, but my personal opinion now is that most doctors are not well-educated in true nutrition.  I know there are a lot of scams with regard to organics, etc., but I also believe getting our food as fresh and pure as possible is very important.  I feel quite optimistic about this eating plan but also don't want to consume foods with a lot of questionable ingredients.  I imagine similar foods to the recommended tortillas and crackers are available organically; those were the main items I felt there would be issues with.  I'll do some checking on the site already recommended and keep the forum updated, in case others have the same concerns.  Thanks for all the help:)

If you had an Amish owned/run store that stocked with their own products I think that would be an excellent source for shopping!
