Xylitol and GAS?
« on: May 10, 2010, 10:08:00 AM »
I used xylitol to make my chocolates on Saturday. After eating a couple of them Saturday night, I had problems all day Sunday and even until this morning with pains in my right shoulder. I would have to move around or have someone pat on my shoulder to relieve the pain and cause me to burp. I am serious....24 hours of burping! I thought I was one of the characters on the Willy Wonka movie or something. Is there a sweetener that isn't as much a producer of gas, so to speak? Is stevia better?

Wow, this is a really personal topic, but ....I want to find a better solution!

That's curious, I find no gas with Xylitol and certainly none with Stevia. Which brand Xylitol are you using? Is it pure or is it a mix with another sugar alcohol?

I will look when I get home. I bought it at a health food store and it's in a white cannister.

Owensmath you are the first person that has reported a problem to me.I use 100% xylitol powder, no fillers.Thats why I started making my own chocolates becuse the store bought products were making me too gassy.I have to work for a living! ;D Let me know what you bought.I haven't had any gas from the xylitol.

It is pure xylitol. Here is the link to the product:  http://www.nutraceutical.com/search/view_product.cfm?product_index=8659671

I did use the milled flax seed as breading with some soy flour on chicken that I fried in some peanut oil that night, too. Could it have been some of that causing it?

I checked the link and it looks like 100%, this is what I would do. Eat a piece of your home made candy, one piece and see if it affects you. I don't believe the flax seed flour or soy flower would cause the gas however as you start introducing new things into your body you may get some gastric side effects as your body gets used to them. Excessive xylitol can cause gas as any sugar alcohol so lets start with one candy and find your tolerance level to it. We use Swanson brand and I've not experienced any problems.

Just a thought: I had my gall bladder removed in 1993. Would that change how I react to any of the above mentioned ingredients? I would think NOT because they are not fatty.
