portion size on zero carb foods
« on: July 10, 2011, 12:00:08 PM »
In buying products that are zero carb the portion varies, of course.  If the portion on the label is zero carbs for 1 teaspoon, example Nathan's original coney island mustard; does the carb count increase if you eat 3 teaspoons?  This is also true of the sauerkraut I purchased, the serving size is 2 tablespoons for 1 g carb and 1 g fiber = net zero carb; but if you eat more than 2 tablespoons what happens? :-\

I am an ex Weight Watcher and their rule was if you eat more than one portion of anything in one day that the "points" increased substantially which in turn decreased your weight loss.

I just started this week and have already lost 3 LBS  ....  YEAH :o
Look out Hawaii, I'm on my way!!

That's a great question. Manufacturers find their way to < 1 carb and zero carbs all the time using portion sizes. Example on point.... Tic Tac mints are pure sugar BUT they say a serving size is 1 mint which is less that .5 grams therefor they are not required to list the carbs. Splenda says 1 packet is their serving size, zero carbs  BUT they too use the less than .5 loophole to not list the carbs when in reality there are 24 carbs per cup.

The best way to protect yourself is to check the ingredient list, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck ...it's a duck  ;)

Doug this is one of my mom's  ;D ;D  So she is not only FTS family now but also my family  ;) ;)

I think you can punch your info into this site and it will tell you if it has hidden carbs:  http://www.lowcarb.ca/low-carb-tools/hidden_carbs.html
maybe that will help to sort it out.   Labels and ingredients can be and are so confusing...... I think I may have forgotten to tell you about that site  ;)

Welcome to the FTS family, suzlyn454! :) :) :) :) :) :)

We are here to support one another on our journeys to becoming thin.

As you've noticed, the FDA's labeling standards are NOT very strict when it comes to reporting carb counts.

Like Doug says, it is also very important to read the ingredient lists... The FDA is strict about them.
If you see one or more high carb ingredient(s) in the first three, my rule is... Don't buy the product!
What you do today is what matters!

Thanks to everyone for information and the warm welcome.  I am very excited about how these foods are making me feel.  The need for daily snacking has left me already.  I have more energy and seem to be getting more things done lol!!
