Beginners marathon training
« on: August 12, 2011, 06:16:56 AM »
Hi, I have read Atkins, South Beach but once I read Fat to Skinny it all made sense. Thanks so much for that! I have lost 14 lbs. since starting and want to lose about 15 more. I have recently started a 20 week training program to run a marathon. (Finishing the marathon is my goal) One thing I have noticed is that as I increase my exercise, my appetite increases. Any suggestion on what I can do to stay on track with my weight loss? Thanks

Keep up the protein and heavy greens like cabbage, collards and spinach. Protein metabolizes more slowly the carbs so the energy will stick with you longer. I'm sure Scott, our resident forum runner will chime in. Welcome to the party!

When running long distance carbs burn too quickly. You need protien because it will give you a slow burn. Scott will chime in ;)

Hey Buckster -

Welcome to the forum!  My ears were burning so I figured something must be going on here that I should check on.

I've completed 18 marathons, all of them under 2:30, and I won the Marine Corps Marathon in DC back in 2009.

Oh wait, that was just a dream I had recently.  :)

In reality, I love to run but have only recently been able to - partly because of losing a lot of weight (the other part is a longer story).  Doug and Umpa are probably much better qualified to advise you on the aspect of how exercise leads to an increased appetite.

I will say 2 things though -

1. Drink a lot of water.  a LOT.  Like 2-3 quarts a day (to me, that's a lot).  Not only does it give your body the water that it really needs anyway, it also can take away a bit of the feelings of hunger.

2. Run early in the morning.  I usually run around 6 am (here in Florida it's so hot this time of year that the early morning time is the most bearable).  Also, you get your metabolism going early in the day and it runs for several hours, burning off the fat.  Maybe someone else can come in with the science behind that.  It works for me though.

But on to the more interesting stuff - what marathon are you going to run?  Are you following any particular 20 week program?  What time do you expect to finish in?  I would love to do a marathon someday but right now I don't have the time to devote to the training.  I do a few miles 3x a week just to maintain that level of fitness.  A marathon requires quite a commitment, so kudos to you!

Scott

When i come out of the gym I immediately have a 0 -1 carb protein shake. It kills my appetite so i can get a shower and make myself a nice lunch. If not i start eating everything  in the fridge! ;) You can add berries if you are in a low or peanut butter

I use the bobs red mill soy protein powder.I make it with almond milk and I flavor it with stevia/strawberries or the chocolate stevia powder. If I am in a low from running too long I will add 2 tablespoons  beanit butter. It all goes in the blender with a little ice.The protein is great for  muscle recovery. ;)

Thanks everyone for the info. Scott I will definitely try the water it sounds like it will do the trick. I also went out and bought some 1 carb bars to keep for the snacks. Scott, I am running the Philly Marathon, following the Higdon program. First time for the marathon so I haven't really thought about my time as much as I am focused on finishing. Been running for years, several half marathon and two meniscus operations but at 55 yrs. I think this may be my last chance. So far the experience has been fantasic. If I can control the appetite and stay away for my brother-in-law (big beer drinker and I am weak around him) I think I have a shot. As stated, I loved the approach Doug has taken in his book, simple and fun but not without challenges. Just like life! Thanks again everyone for the support.
