Portions and full-fat products
« on: January 28, 2012, 07:17:53 AM »
Hi Everyone

I'm new to FTS and my husband and I are starting your diet TODAY. I have about 90lbs to loose and my husband probably 30lbs. I read the book near the end of my pregnancy as I gained about 60lbs, so I remember most of it, and have tried to review it the past couple days before starting, but my time is limited so I haven't been able to cover from front to back. I'm skimmed through as many questions as I could since joining yesterday, but forgive me if I'm being redundant!!

Just wondering about protien portion sizes. Is there a certain amount of ounces you reccommend following, certain cuts of meats to stay away from (i.e ribs, chicken wings, dark meat, red meat) Same question for cheese. I know alot of low fat products contain more carbs or sugar, but if we're eating full fat cheese, sour cream, mayo etc is there a portion guideline. Portion sizes in regards to nuts?

My husband has a HUGE appetite and if he feels at all that he is hungry I know he wont stick to this, but I also want him to be successful and not over do it.

Any adivce to get us on our feet for the first few weeks until we have time to read everything would be appreciated!!

Also did alot of you loose weight with minimal exercise. I like to exercise and do it when I can, but I find there's alot of days where I can't fit it in or am too tired from being up all night and then I get discouraged.

20 carbs per day is the only thing to focus on in the beginning.Fat will help you stay full and lowfat products are loaded with sugar. The book is available on  audiobook if you don't have time to read.. Everybodys portion size is different. You should never be hungry. The reason FTS works so well is replacements. We have replacements for everything! That way when you lose the weight there are no foods to add back in to make you gain the weight back.Cycle broken.  ;)

Welcome to the family, ES15!!! :) :) :) :) :) :)

As you can tell reading Umpa's response to your post, in the beginning keep it as simple as possible.
As time goes along, you can add more things, change things up, etc..

But for now just focus on staying below 20 net carbs a day and NEVER allow yourself to get hungry.
When we get hungry, our body tries to stop the weight loss process as a survival mechanism.

Don't worry too much about exercise.
It's good for overall health and to keep the metabolism going, so it's recommended.
But it really does little to lose pounds.
It takes a LOT of exercise to lose just 1 pound.

One other important thing... Drink LOTS of plain water EVERY day!
It flushes out "burned" fat and other toxins.
It also helps keep the skin elastic so excess flab from losing weight is less of a problem.
What you do today is what matters!

Welcome ES15.  My husband has done great with the FTS lifestyle and he has a big appetite.   ;D The thing you have to remember is to have the foods he likes to eat and just convert them to FTS friendly recipes.  Enchilada's, tacos, yummy deserts! The forum has many wonderful recipes and we have tried things that we had never eaten before (turnips, jicamin).
