shirataki noodles?
« on: March 10, 2012, 09:59:39 PM »
I just read the Fat to Skinny book and started yesterday because my diabetes is severly out of control. I watched the video of Doug making pasta primavera. Can anyone tell me more about the shirataki noodles? Years ago I bought something online called miracle noodles and they were so gross i had to throw them away. They had this horrible fishy smell and even after being rinsed i could smell it. Does anyone know if these are the same thing? Thanks for your input.

That is one kind. I rinse them, boil them for about three minutes and then pat them dry on paper towels or a dish towel. Once I add sauce or other food to it, it tastes and smells like the other food.

Hi Jenna and welcome!  You will love this forum and the folks here too!  I really enjoy eating this way, and you will figure out the things you like best.  I've tried the miracle noodles and the shirataki noodles.  The taste wasn't bad, I think I mainly just didn't like the texture.  It's been a while, so I may try them again.  I  have found that I do really enjoy the spaghetti squash!  That little veggie amazes me!

Check out the recipe exchange section, and be sure to order the bakery book!  You can do FTS and never feel deprived!  Welcome aboard!   ;D

Welcome Jenna  ;D   I think I'm with Maddysmom on this one.  I just don't care for the texture.  If you rinse them and prepair them right they will only have the smell and taste of what you are putting them in though.  More times than not I will use zucchini or spaghetti squash for my pasta dishes.  I've even discovered just recently how to use egg whites in some dishes...surprisingly good  ;)  Have a look around the forum....there are a lot of great recipes and ideas on here, and tons of support.   :)

Hi Jenna, I didn't really care for the miracle noodles texture, either. The smell was so faint that it didn't bother me. I had a bunch of the noodles and ended up throwing them away because they got too old. Sometimes I cut firm tofu into noodle-like shapes and use that, or use the egg white noodles that TooSweet came up with. Sometimes I make a pasta dish without any noodles or pasta or tofu - just the rest of the dish satisfies the craving, kind of like making pizza without the crust. It satisfies my pizza craves.

Welcome to the family, Jenna!!! :) :) :) :) :) :)

I was a diabetic with high blood pressure and highly elevated "bad" LDL cholesterol and low "good" HDL.

I started the FTS lifestyle in August 2010.
In March  2011, I visited my doctor and he said that I was no longer diabetic! ;D ;D ;D
See; http://www.fattoskinny.net/index.php?topic=2362.msg21875#msg21875

I'm 60 years old and have been fighting FAT most of my life.
I've tried many many diets, fads, injections, hypnosis, etc... Everything short of surgery!
And NOTHING has done for me what FTS has done!

The FTS lifestyle will help you, Jenna!
And we're all right here to help you too! :)

Thanks to all of you for your support and understanding. After two days of this (diet?) my fasting blood sugar was 128. It has been running 180 to 220 for the past month and i have been taking lots of medicine which really isn't helping. Blood pressure is also high. I want to lose about 50 lbs (i am currently 188 and go to the gym 3 times a week - although I ate 1000 calorie diet for two weeks - i  gained 2 lbs. This is the most motivated i have been in a while. I think i will try the squash in place of pasta and maybe tofu cut into strips. I think i already have a mental thing going about the shirataki noodles if they smell the same as the miracle noodles. Thanks again.

You'll do great with this way of eating, Jenna! Once your eyes have been opened to the way food works in your body, you won't ever want to go back to your old eating habits!

Jenna you sound so much like me before I started FTS.  I started this lifestyle just to drop a few pounds for my sons wedding and instead found a way back to my good health.  If you are taking meds to lower you sugar than please make sure you are testing often to keep a check that it doesn't drop to low.  It was a matter of days and I knew I needed to convince my doc to let me try just the diet change without the meds.  I quickly found that I no longer needed them.  Believe it or not I was taking two types of pills along with long acting insulin, and still couldn't get it in check.    With FTS as a lifestyle (not a diet  ;) ) I dropped the meds  and I've never looked back  ;D ;D

Welcome, Jenna58.  I have another pasta substitute:  shredded cabbage.  You can steam it a little bit if you want.  If the sauce is hot, I don't think it's necessary.

I hope you enjoy the journey to a new you.  Chime in any time.
