Canada entry #51
« on: July 20, 2010, 09:35:36 AM »
At 60, I have been overweight for about 35 years. I weigh 160 pounds and
am 5`1`. I have Stage 2 diabetes. About 10 years ago, when I was
diagnosed, I lost 20 pounds and began exercising. Unfortunately, I
developed considerable hip and back pain which caused me to stop going
to the gym. Still, by limiting sugar, though far from eliminating it,
and walking my dogs, I have not yet had to take any medication. While I
have some bursitis in my hips, my biggest problem otherwise is spinal
stenosis, which causes a great deal of pain in my legs; at the moment,
it is so severe that I cannot walk very far, nor even stand for any
length of time. The only position which guarantees lack of pain is
sitting, and, even then, only some chairs will do. Will losing weight
help with the stenosis? I doubt it, though it could surprise me. But if
I am unable to exercise and I don't change my diet,  my diabetes will
inevitably progress to requiring medication - even insulin. Life would
be bad enough with the stenosis; I certainly don't need “active”
diabetes as well. So, please consider sending me your book, though I am
inclined to doubt that I am the worst-off of those responding to the
column.

Congratulations for what you have done, for yourself as well as for
readers of your book!
