I want to verify something about sugar
« on: January 03, 2011, 12:54:02 PM »
From what I read in Dougs book , on a label I am not to factor in what's listed under " sugar "  into the formula for net carbs ?  only minus off what's listed as " sugar alcohols" ? because some labels I read it only says " sugars" but does'nt specify...for example slim fast bars

Hi Bella; Welcome to the forum. You'll find lots of help and encouragement here.

You are correct.
Net carbs = carbs minus fibre  eg) 9 carbs - 4 fibre = 5 net carbs
OR
if there are sugar alcohols listed then
net carbs = carbs minus fibre minus sugar alcohols. eg) 9 carbs - 4 fibre - 2 sugar alcohol = 3 net carbs

An item only contains sugar alcohols if it has certain types of artificial sweetener in it. If sugar alcohols are not listed it is because they are not in that item.
You do not subtract sugar when calculating net carbs.
