Emergency Pizza Pack
« on: April 25, 2010, 09:35:50 AM »
As all readers know in my book I talk about "real hunger" vs "gee that smells good hunger" and yes, they are totally different. It's important to recognize the difference between these two and to deal with them efficiently. Eating for the sake of fulfilling hunger is good, eating for any other reason will stall weight loss.  I've read several  posts recently where the smell of pizza or being exposed to goodies at work is sparking that old feeling. It's tough I know, like when someone quits smoking and someone else in the house smokes. We as people must recognize these temptations will never go away. They'll always be pizza parties, fresh bread smells, goodies at work and other temptations. The answer to dealing with those situations is very easy, an "Emergency Pizza Pack".

This is a simple solution to a problem you'll face over and over. When Umpa and I leave the house we never go anywhere without provisions in the "pack" Beef Jerky, Almonds, Optimum Nutrition Protein Bars, sugar free hard candy and a package of LaTortilla low carb tortillas. We keep the "pack" in the fridge and grab it when we leave for a shopping trip. This way no matter what we always have our food with us. If you find yourself feeling the urge to eat due to smells or even a visual, "boy that looks good" feeling grab something dense from the pack like beef jerky or a protein bar. Eat this "safe" food and drink a big glass of water. Within short order all the "emotional" feelings to eat will simply disappear. But what about when you're actually going out to eat with people at a pizza joint or pizza gets called in at work and you really want a taste?

It's as simple as carrying in a low carb tortilla from your pack. Order a small pizza with all your favorite toppings but light on the sauce(sugar). When it arrives load up your tortilla with the toppings and cheese and be part of the party. This way you won't feel like you're getting cheated out of the crust. I've also found most establishments, especially the ones you frequent often are willing to do most anything to make you happy. Next time you take the family out for pizza ask to speak to the cook. Tell the cook you're on a low starch eating plan and can't enjoy his wonderful crust, then present him with a low carb tortilla and ask to have your pizza made on it, light on the sauce. You'll be amazed how cooperative most people are.

Get into new habits, for the temptations will always be there!

Great suggestions - portability is so important in order to get out of dicey situations, to be sure.  THANKS for all the support you and Umpa give to us, unlike other "diet" message boards where the author wouldn't think of interacting with the "followers."
