NOW Almond flour/soy flour and soy protein powder
« on: May 25, 2011, 12:41:04 PM »
Hi, I want a low carb almond flour for a these wonderful recipes in the new F2S Bakery book. I see on Netrition.com the Now brand is $4.69 for 10 ounces ($7.50 per pound). It is 4 net carbs per cup which is the lowest I have ever seen in a flour besides flax which seems to be zero net carbs. So is this the best deal in ultra-low almond flour? Is there a bigger quantity of this (or equivalent product) somewhere for less money per pound? If not, I’ll just go for it I guess. Also a ton of the recipes call for soy flour and soy protein powder. Does anyone have recommendations on those as far as taste, brand, cost, net carbs? where to buy etc.? Thanks so much.

Hi F2S-Awesome! :)

I like the NOW Almond Flour for the same reasons... Umpa says she does too!

I have not found it in larger packages (at any price) other than the 10 oz. size this link:
http://www6.netrition.com/now_almond_flour_page.html
They will sell them to you for $4.46 each if your total order is $200+.

Or you might contact Now Foods directly (http://www.nowfoods.com/) to see if they make it available in larger sizes.
If so...
Contact Netrition.com customer service at 1-888-817-2411 to see if they will sell larger packages.

Not a big fan of soy.
Maybe someone else will chime in about it.

I buy Now unblanched almond flour at amazon 4 bags per case.I have to amazon prime shipping though.Soy flour is 16 grams per cup.The problem with soy and baking is sometimes it turns bitter. But in recipes that you need a *real white flour*, soy is the only choice .It is also cheap. If i use it I cut it with other flours. ;)

My first order from Netrition arrived today!   I was so excited!  Got my Xyltiol, trying the Dixie Diner's pancake mix, oh and Umpa.....I got the Now unblanched almond flour!  (didn't realize the difference until I questioned the carb count on the coconut cake.  Thank you! ;))  I had been purchasing the Bob's Red Mill "blanched" almond flour at Publix for like $11.20 for 1 lb!  I like the price at Netrition & the flat rate shipping too!!    ;D

I tried the Dixie Diner pancake mix this morning, and it was good.  However, for the price, I enjoy the flaxseed pancakes I've been making just as well.   ;)    I sat this morning and looked through the bakery book. So hard to pick!  ha ha  Honestly, I think that first I'll make the little coconut cake again now that I have the unblanched almond flour.   I love that cake!  I've found that if I take it out of the oven a little sooner, once it cools, the center is more like an old timey coconut pie.  SOOO good!  ;D

Jan I bought Carbquik this last time and it is good and less expensive.  Are your flax pancakes in the bakery book or on this forum?

Hi Amber!  The flaxseed pancake recipe is here on the forum in the breakfast recipe section..3rd recipe on the list.  It has cinnamon listed, but you can make it with or without it.   There's also another pancake recipe, further down on the list, that's made with almond flour.   I put strawberries and Land of Lakes whipped cream on my pancakes again this morning!  Love that!  ;D

The whole point of the Bakery book Amber was to get people away from some of these expensive mixes so you can go in your kitchen and cook from scratch. For the price of the mixes you can buy the flours. If you can't  find a scratch recipe, just Ask Umpa ;)
