Gum, candy, and drink mixes

Hi,
When shopping yesterday, I had sugar-free gum, sugar-free hard candy, and sugar-free drink mixes on my list. But then looking at the labels I got all confused. On the drink mixes, you know the ones you add to water to make lemonade or whatever flavor; well on those I say a Splenda logo on one of them and got weary. I started thinking there might be hidden carbs. Then with all the different technical names for all the different imitation sugars, I decided I’d forget buying any of it until I came here for advice. Does anyone know all the technical names for the fake sugars, and which ones have hidden carbs (an amount under 1 that they can not list on the label) and which ones don’t if any? Same goes for gum and hard candy. Recommendations? I’d love a carb free way to add flavor to my water to help me drink more,
And I’d love a carb free hard candy and gum, but I want to be sure it’s truly zero carb because I want these things but not enough to “waste” my precious carbs on them. Thanks for any advice.

I drink things with Splenda but it's not my favorite. Sometimes if I drink too much of it I don't loose anything. Sad but the aspartame stuff seems to not affect me at all. We're all different and sometimes it's just trial and error. The Crystal Light products seem to be okay though.

I avoid Splenda as it has 1 net gram per packet and I don't like the aftertaste.

We're all different.
For some folks, even a little sugar alcohols can slow (or stop) weight loss and/or cause digestive issues.
Others can "tolerate" much more without ill effects.

Just write down everything you eat each day (including sweeteners) and see what your body does.
Your body knows itself far better than anyone else! ;)

Thanx for the replies. I was hoping someone knew enough about the fake sugar to know which ones had just under a carb or less per serving so they can claim zero carb. Those are the ones I want to avoid. I’d love to know all the ones that are truly zero carb. I was also hoping some had a list of like here is the trade name “Splenda, Sweet and Low” etc and here is the chemical name of their product. That way I could take all that info with me when shopping for sugar free stuff so I can make sure I buy only sugar free things that have the totally carb free fake sugar in them. Then to add more confusion, I was reading that there are versions of the fake sugar that are in liquid form and that some of them have no carbs at all as opposed to their granular equivalent that has a little carbs, i.e. Splenda. It’s all very confusing. For the most part I tend to stay away from these things, but for Gum, candy, and drink mixes it would be nice to have some once in a while as long as I knew I wasn’t taking in (wasting valuable) hidden carbs. Thanks

Hi F2S-Awesome! :)

One of the beautiful things about FTS is that it is really quite simple.
And this simplicity is one of the primary reasons why it works so well for so many people.

So do yourself a big favor... Keep it simple and fun! :) :) :)

You only really need two kinds of sweeteners, one for cooking and one for drinks and other things.
Personally, I use xylitol for cooking and stevia for everything else.

As far as carbs in prepared foods... just read the nutrition labels for carb counts AND also look a the top three ingredients to determine if you should consider buying the products.
This is what I've done and it's been responsible for my losing 60 pounds of excess FAT! ;D ;D ;D

Yes I agree. But I want to use gum and hard candy like Doug recommends, and I’d like some water additives/drink mixes to make drinking water less boring. But I want these things without carbs; finding it hard to achieve that because of all the ambiguities involved. At least, maybe someone out there can reply with something like “I buy X brand hard candy (or gum) and it for sure has zero carbs” and/or “I buy X brand powder and add it to my water and for sure it’s 100% carb free” etc. Thanks

Hi F2S-Awesome! :)

Occasionally, I chew Trident gum and eat Jolly Rancher Sugar Free Hard Candies.
I have yet to find a candy or gum that is "sweet" and has no carbs from, at least, sugar alcohols.
Those carbs do not count toward the daily allowance of 20.

There is NO substitute for plain water.... PERIOD!

Believe it or not, even though we're drinking other drinks, we can become mildly dehydrated by not drinking enough of it!!!
Our bodies NEED PLAIN WATER to flush out impurities and help our weight loss stay on track.

I will, on occasion, have a diet soda, a Crystal Light drink, some tea sweetened with a little stevia, etc..
I just don't overdo any product that has sweeteners.

The tolerance to the sugar alcohols from sweeteners varies from person to person.
Only your body will tell you how much you can have without effecting your weight loss.
So go forth and enjoy your FTS journey! :)

Tony, you are always so helpful. Thank you. I’m referring to “net carbs” only; I’m not worried at all about the sugar alcohol carbs. So for instance is Trident gum zero net carbs? Is all sugar free gum zero net carbs? It could be true if none of them use powdered Splenda which has the hidden carbs Doug was talking about; same for drink mix-ins, and hard candy. I just want to have these things on hand for occasional use, but I want to make sure there are no hidden net carbs like in them like Splenda. I hope that makes sense. Thanks

Yes you do make sense...

Since you will be using sugar free gum, candies, and/or drink mixes only occasionally, don't worry about them!
And for those that may have a very small amount of net carbs (less than 1) won't make a real difference IF you DON'T overdo it.

Trident sugar free gum has Sorbitol, Maltitol, and/or Mannitol polyols (among other sugar alcohols) depending on flavor.
They do not provide any carbs that count toward your 20 carb allowance... So consider them 0 net carbs.

This may not be true for ALL sugar free products.
That's why it's important to always read nutrition labels very carefully.
You know the truth about Splenda. So watch out for it on food labels.

And further, you SHOULD be concerned about sugar alcohols as they can cause stall-outs and digestive problems.

Like I said before, pay attention to how YOUR body RESPONDS to sugar alcohols to see how things go.
There are some folks who can't have ANY before their weight loss slows or stops.
Others can eat them liberally without effect.

I'm with Tony on this. Those sugar alcohols KILL my [url=http://www.fattoskinny.com/]weight loss[/url] completely, especially in the russell stover candies. If you find you're not loosing what you want to be, cut them all out completely. They really aren't that great for you and it might even prolong detox. I know for me when I have those candies a few days in a row I start craving sweets again and that's not fun. I suggest using SF jello with no carb whipped cream. Same fun sweet taste with NO carbs. Also there is a recipe on the board here for Berry Cheesecake that I absolutely LOVE! We make it without the berries to lower the carbs and use stevia for the sweetener (adds a lemon taste to it) and then cover each piece with no carb whipped cream. It is literally the best thing I have ever tasted and it's only four carbs a slice. (Now I'm hungry!!)

succralose is splenda.Thats the only other name that I know for it. Splenda is acceptable just count the carbs.It is not o carbs its one carb per packet.Erithinol is another sweetener they are using in the candies also.I have never used this sweetner. I like xylitol and stevia. ;) Did that answer your question?? :)
