crumbles on top of an apple pie
« on: January 17, 2012, 08:25:14 PM »
Hi Umpa, how can one make the crumbles that you get in some apple pies?  I was hoping that you can do something like that and I can use it as a granola substitute

I'm glad you asked that question Alex....I've been wondering the same  ;)
I wonder if anyone has used or heard of TVP (Textured or Texturized Vegetable Protein)  I was searching for something to use in my hubs favorite cookie that would be low carb.  He likes the no bake cookies (sugar, rolled oats, sugar...LOL)  and I ran across this.  http://www.livestrong.com/thedailyplate/nutrition-calories/food/generic/tvp-granola_54761/  I've never used it myself so I don't know....I didn't even know it existed...LOL but it seems it would behave much like oat meal......  http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/breakfast1/r/tvpoatmeal.htm     anyone?  Umpa have you and Doug heard of it?

The more I search the more I find uses for it but here is a recipe for granola with and without Alex

I was thinking so to Umpa.  My daughter went through a stage where she didn't want to eat anything that started out with a face...LOL  She had me buying all kinds of things made with soy and such...I'm thinking a lot of it was made with this.  It's supposed to be a great meat replacement.  I really wasn't all that interested until I found the oatmeal recipe.  If you can make a crumb topping with it....I'm thinking killer mock apple (zucchini) crisp just to start off...LOL  I think the next order I make I'll get some to play with too  ;)

Cool  8)  Let me know what you think.  I thought it was pretty cheap myself.  Seems like you get a lot for the price.
