Let me start off by saying your story about Doug Varrieur was very well written and inspiring. That was an amazing transformation for one person to go through.
Well, my story is not as extreme, and it started about two years ago. I am now 45 years old, 6'2", 210lbs. always been an active guy, watched what i ate/drank and was always playing some kind of sports to keep fit.
About two years ago our family went to Mexico just before Christmas.I love All inclusives. Dec 22nd I had an appointment scheduled for a regular check up since I am now over 40. You know how mom's can be!!!
So, I feel great, always have. Go for my check up, doctor gives me "the sheet" to take to the lab for the usual tests. Sure, routine. Good thing I drank that bottle of water on the way in. There's times I'veneeded to take "the cup" home with me because I couldn't fill it, and bring it back later. Anyhow, a few days later doc calls says, "Go back to lab for more tests". I said,"Alrighty, anything serious?" Not sure till we seeresults. So back I go. Tests done and I'm off to work. Few days later doc wants to meet. Don't get too scared, I'm perfectly healthy, feel great. So, meet with doc and he tells me I have diabetes. I siad,"Are you sure? I feel fine." He confirmed yes. But they were baffled just as I was. No history, no symptoms???
So since that day it was test blood sugar 7 times a day. Ouch my fingers hurt. Finally have insulin levels where they seem normal to the doc's. Now, I really notice it when my sugar levels are low and I'm about to pass out. Why can't I go back to the way it was before?? I felt better!!!
Now I have to watch my diet even closer and insulin shots only 4 times a day with 4 tests per day. Both WOWSERS are the supplies expensive. Not everything is covered. I have charts and lists of good food for me all over my fridge at home. It is very frustrating trying to figure things out sometimes. I have only gained about 20lbs but I would really like to get this diabetes under control like Doug did and live a healthier, balanced, lighter body weight life.
So, that's about it in a nutshell. Oh wait..... can I eat nuts?? I think so. Not too many though. Anyhow, two thumbs up for Doug for what he has accomplished and many years of continued good health.
