Carb calories
« on: June 02, 2013, 10:55:14 PM »
Hello. I have a question. I believe there are 4 calories to each carb. Is that correct? Also, if I am burning 100 calories doing aerobic exercise, does that mean I am also burning 25 carbs? (If 4 is the correct number). Also, is it better to eat before or after a workout? I know I said question and then asked 3. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Iford1964 welcome to the family! Yes, according to the calorie rules each gram of carb is the equivalent of 4 calories. "They" also say each gram of protein is the equivalent of 4 calories and each gram of fat balances out at 9 calories.

Now, understanding that calories are a measurement of energy and each of us burns energy at a different level makes it very difficult to rely on any true calculations. Your weight, the intensity of your exercise even your metabolism all play a role in the calorie burning "guess" I call it a guess because that's what it is.

I shy away from any kind of calorie counting simply because it's a non-accurate science. I keep it very simple, stay under 20 net grams of carbs per day and you'll lose weight. But, if you wish to play with the numbers here's a calorie chart from the Mayo Clinic;

Activity (1-hour duration)                                         Weight of person and calories burned
                                                160 pounds (73 kilograms)  200 pounds (91 kilograms)   240 pounds (109 kilograms)

Welcome to the FTS family, lford1964!!! :) :) :) :) :) :)

Moving away from the "calorie count" and into the "carb count" mindset is a challenge for many folks.
It's like riding a bicycle... Once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. :)

I've tried so many different low calorie and exercise "programs", it makes my head spin! :P
After each attempt, I ended up back to my original weight, PLUS more!!! :(

Without changing ANYTHING else, the FTS lifestyle has changed my life forever!
I'm NO LONGER type II diabetic, with high blood pressure, and bad cholesterol numbers.
Plus... I no longer take FIVE different medications to manage those problems!!! ;D

And I'm healthier and feel better now than I have for at least 30 years!!! ;D ;D ;D

What you do today is what matters!
