Sorbitol question
« on: August 14, 2010, 05:00:02 PM »
 Hi everyone,
I found a fifty-fifty jam (spread) today in a new supermarket that's just opened - hoorah it has things like xylitol and sugar free syrups etc.
I picked up the jam and its nutritional info is 3 carbs (less 1 fiber), but it also lists sorbitol.
I did a search on sorbitol (Doug, in case you tell me to search) lol, and I found that if over-consumed can upset your stomach.  I'm ok with that because I was just going to make yoghurt with it, so I'm not planning on eating the whole jar in one sitting!
My question is whether I subtract the sorbitol count too - I imagine not, because its not sugar alcohols, but just thought, because its on the label under fiber, where the sugar alcohols usually are.
Sorry if this is a really dumb question, but I had to ask.
Linda

Indeed Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol. Fifty/50 jams are o carb. If you're looking at a label with 3 SA's I presume you're looking at the orange marmalade as the berry jams I have all list 2 and the orange lists 3. Subtract the SA from the total carbs to arrive at 0. Now, the reason sorbitol will upset your tummy if over consumed is because of its laxative effect....so keep within the serving size recommendations.

Thanks for the replies.
Doug its a Fifty50 Sugar Free Strawberry Spread.
The carbs are 3g
and Sorbitol 2g
So its 1 carb.
Maybe its different in Canada to the U.S. one?

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr I want a 0 carb spread!
I think I can use this for Gary's yoghurt recipe?

Gary - your thoughts please??????

Sorry again, in my original post I said it had 1 Fiber, it doesn't.
Just the 3 carbs
and 2 sorbitol

Gotcha, they do list things differently around the world. Gary's recipe calls for Walden Farms zero carb fruit spread....can you get that product? I'd be surprised if they don't ship to Canada ?

Yeah I was going to order some Walden Farms from the lowcarb grocery, but seriously, I have spent so much money lately on "alternative" foods, that I need to pull my head in a little!

Thanks Jo, I actually bought some zero carb raspberry syrup from the low carb grocery, so I was thinking I might try that also.  LOL I wasn't going to put the whole jar in!  If I only need a tsp or something I guess the carb count would be very minimal anyways eh Doug?

thanks for your help, I'm about to post another "dumb question"....

That'd work...by the way, there's only one dumb question I've EVER been asked about the FTS program..... "Can I eat SUGAR? "  ;)

HAHAHA, then I don't feel like the dunce anymore!

Thanks Doug, I'd prefer to ask questions than go along not quite knowing what I'm doing!
