Chocolate Milkshake
« on: September 13, 2010, 01:03:18 PM »
I was thinking today that I hadn't had a chocolate milkshake for a few years and would love to have one, so I came up with a a FTS friendly recipe.  I was planning on drinking it with my lunch.  It was soooo good and filling that it ended up being my lunch.  This is what I did:

Chocolate “Milkshake”

In a Magic Bullet or Blender add the following:

1 cup SF Vanilla Almond Milk (1 net carb)
¼ cup heavy cream (0 net carbs)
2-3 ice cubes
1 – 2 tblsp SF Hershey Chocolate Syrup (< 1 net carb)
1 tsp. xylitol (0 net carbs)

Blend until you can no longer hear the ice cubes on the chopping blades.  Pour into a tall glass with a straw.  Drink and enjoy!!
Did I add the net carbs right?

My SF Hershey's chocolate Syrup says per 2 tblsp.:
5g. Carbohydrates,
< 1 g dietary Fiber
4g Sugar Alcohols.
So, I guess it's not zero, but maybe round it up to 1 net carb.  The Hershey nutrition chart doesn't mention sugar alcohols.
Anyway it is waaay less net carbs than a large chocolate shake from MacDonalds.  I looked on their website and a lg. choc shake (which is probably where I had my last choc. shake) was 202 net carbs, and I think my recipe tasted just as good if not better because I wasn't choking on the guilt.

LOL!!  Ok, let's change the words Magic Bullet to mini personal BLENDER to avoid another run of innuendos.

Mmmm?...

According to my math:

5 grams total Carbs,
Minus 4 grams Sugar Alcohols (they don't count toward net carbs),
Minus less than 1 gram (0.5 to 0.9) fiber (doesn't count toward net carbs),
Equal 0.1 to 0.5 grams net carbs for the syrup.

Added to 1 gram net carbs from Almond milk, you end up with 1.1 to 1.5 grams net carbs for the milkshake.

If you want to get even more creative, substitute Walden Farms Dips or fruit syrups (ALL 0 grams net carbs) for strawberry, marchmallow, raspberry, blueberry, caramel, or even lower carb chocolate shakes!

But remember... Too many sugar alcohols can lead to abdominal (gas) issues and numerous bathroom visits! So be careful!
What you do today is what matters!

I only have the Hershey's SF chocolate syrup right now.  I'll try the Walden Farms when I get some.  Thanks for the suggestion Mouseissue.

Hi mariairam!  :)

Last summer, I made milkshakes using vanilla whey protein powder, adding some strawberry extract, and a 2-4 real strawberries for texture.
If you like chocolate covered strawberries, you could use chocolate flavored whey powder... I think this is really good!  ;D

I put the powder, water (1/2 cold and 1/2 ice chips), and extract into a blender and run it for 10-15 seconds.
Then I'll add the strawberries and run the blender with a few "bursts" (enough to break up the berries into very small pieces).

The amount of water/ice depends on the blending instructions that are on the whey powder package.
The amount of extract is based on taste preference... Experiment!

If the whey powder you use is not very sweet (or you like sweeter shakes), you can always add some sweetener like Stevia.
What you do today is what matters!

Mariairam, I don't have the vanilla whey protein, so I would just use the original recipe with the almond milk and heavy cream that I posted.   I would eliminate the chocolate syrup and put in a couple of strawberries or some Davinci SF Strawberry Syrup.  Hope this helps.

I don't have sf syrup.  If I use unsweetened cocoa how much sweetener should I use?
