Simply said, ketones are the "ash" of burnt fat cells. If weight is coming off fat cells are burning and ketones will be present, this is ketosis. Some people spend money on strips to check their urine to see if their body is in ketosis, I simply watch the scale...if the weight is dropping fat cells are burning.

In the long haul, the scale alone will tell us if fat is burning.

However, for those of us who lose weight very slowly (like me) and/or don't see much change in the scale over periods of time, these strips are helpful in verifying that ketosis is still happening even when the scale is "silent".

I use them when I don't see weight loss on the scale for two (or more) weeks or, when I suspect that I might have eaten something high-carb that stopped my weight loss.

They are inexpensive and seem to help my morale at those times when I think the scale should be moving down, but isn't.
They are also more convenient than taking frequent body measurements.
This is just my personal preference.

I am never past the first level on the ketostix and it is frustrating. I am, however, losing pounds and inches.

Hi owensmath!  :)

Please don't be frustrated!
As long as you losing weight (and size), you're headed in the right direction.

Unless you're blessed to be one of those "fast losers", you will probably read "trace" or "small" (like I do).
The good news is (according to my doc), if you show only "trace", you are still burning (and not storing) fat.

Hi Jo!  :)

I've noticed this too!

My guess is that we don't burn much (if any) fat while we sleep (so there is little or no "ash").
After we're up for a while and our metabolisms start speeding up, the fat starts burning too.
Just as long as we're burning fat, that's what matters.

We do, makes it easier to cut and reduces the amount of water run off in the pan. Place your slices In a skillet of hot water on the stove for a few moments till soft then pat, let cool a moment then build your lasagna. We use the same method with egg plant.
