Confused about coffee
« on: February 12, 2011, 07:01:46 PM »
I know Doug's book says to count a cup of coffee as 1 net carb. Other websites all say something different. Fat Secret says one cup of coffee is 0.09 carbs and for brewed from grounds it's 0 carbs.

I don't drink a lot of coffee these days. I have one mug, sometimes two. I just don't know if I should be counting it towards my daily 20 carbs because the information out there is so different.

Rena,

One (or two) mugs a day should not be a problem especially if you usually stay below 20 carbs per day.

I understand that some coffee processors add an ingredient to instant coffee to keep it from clumping that might have a very small net amount of carbs.
If you use ground coffee, no additives are used and, therefore, no carbs.

I am not aware of anybody who has changed their weight loss pattern by drinking (or not drinking) coffee.
Don't worry about it... But don't overdo it either!

Thanks. What brought it to my attention was the eating plan forum here where everyone was listing theirs as one carb. We grind our beans right before brewing, although I don't know if that makes any difference.

It's just confusing when there's so many conflicting numbers out there. Thanks, again.

I brew my own coffee (not flavoured) so that's great that I have been taking in less carbs than I thought.  What about tea?  I know herbal teas are 0.  I looked up Lipton's Orange Pekoe tea (regular black tea) and it said 0 carbs.  Tetley said 1. They are both Orange pekoe, black tea.  I wonder what the difference is?  I have been drinking herbal teas, but I do enjoy a nice cup of black tea.  I hate using up my carbs on beverages.

Aha!!! That's where the carbs Doug was counting are coming from!!!... The flavoring additives!
So, if you do not drink instant coffee or any coffees with added flavoring(s), you are getting 0 carbs!

That should settle the controversy around here.

Thanks for that revelation, Gary!  :)
